Book excerpt: It's not much, but having that slight advantage over the elapse of time as we move forward, could in many ways make life easier. With that thought comes the advent of my book and its calendar, my book will help you understand many of the upcoming days and generate less stress as to what a certain day in the past, present and the futures, was, will or, is all about to a certain extent. It's called, "Foretell the Future with the I Ching and My Calendar of Days". With this book you will learn within a short time about the origin of the I Ching, as well as gain some insight into how it came to influence me to create a perpetual calendar. An old man told me to go and check a book out of the library and read it, I went one step further as a dowser, I asked what was the most important item in my house at the time as I scanned each room while dowsing, the indicator was that book I had borrowed from the public library, The I Ching. Enough said about dowsing. My calendar is based on the 64 hexagrams, with the kicker being, the calendar is a window into the future and the past, but more importantly the present scheme of things. The calendar can be used to gain insight into the scheme of past and future events. My main passionate observance with this calendar one knows when to fast. And as stated with hexagram 36, one should fast for three days, and play close attention to three days before, and three days after peak-ness. I usually take raw fresh fruit juice for three days after peak-ness; in any event I think that one should fast at least once a week, juice fast, that is. In all cases ask your doctor first folks. It is very enlightening to know when to fast and know when to abstain from a full load of activities. I usually take a vacation from work for three to seven days. This helps me to purge all poison and other obstructions from my body and keep out of harm's way as well, because as I know hexagram thirty-six does mean Injury. Knowing that, I know not to take any undue chances. This is all due to a general tendency that the calendar presents. Lastly I would like to impart upon you that 63 as noted in the I Ching, is not necessarily an after completion or ending, its and advent of a new starting point, thanks folks for listening (1-8-2012). “A pine cone just fell somewhere, it is time.” ~James Byrd 1-18-2012 And again, look up some great person's birthday and you will be surprise. A hint..., the greatest person you know. Now enjoy the year of the dragon, 1-24-2012 (23). Moving towards global peace with words, do you know what I meant.

Book excerpt: Taking as its starting-point the ambiguous heritage left by the British Empire to its former colonies, dominions and possessions, And the Birds Began to Sing marks a new departure in the interdisciplinary study of religion and literature. Gathered under the rubric Christianity and Colonialism, essays on Brian Moore. Timothy Findley, Margaret Atwood and Marian Engel, Thomas King, Les A. Murray, David Malouf, Mudrooroo and Philip McLaren, R.A.K. Mason, Maurice Gee, Keri Hulme, Epeli Hau'ofa, J.M. Coetzee, Christopher Okigbo, Chinua Achebe, Amos Tutuola and Ngugi wa Thiong'o explore literary portrayals of the effects of British Christianity upon settler and native cultures in Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, and the Africas. These essays share a sense of the dominant presence of Christianity as an inherited system of religious thought and practice to be adapted to changing post-colonial conditions or to be resisted as the lingering ideology of colonial times. In the second section of the collection, Empire and World Religions, essays on Paule Marshall and George Lamming, Jean Rhys, Olive Senior and Caribbean poetry, V.S. Naipaul, Anita Desai, Kamala Markandaya, and Bharati Mukherjee interrogate literature exploring relations between the scions of British imperialism and religious traditions other than Christianity. Expressly concerned with literary embodiments of belief-systems in post-colonial cultures (particularly West African religions in the Caribbean and Hinduism on the Indian subcontinent), these essays also share a sense of Christianity as the pervasive presence of an ideological rhetoric among the economic, social and political dimensions of imperialism. In a polemical Afterword, the editor argues that modes of reading religion and literature in post-colonial cultures are characterised by a theodical preoccupation with a praxis of equity.

For all the 10 years of her life, H&à has only known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, the warmth of her friends close by, and the beauty of her very own papaya tree. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. H&à and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope. In America, H&à discovers the foreign world of Alabama: the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food, the strange shape of its landscape, and the strength of her very own family. This is the moving story of one girl's year of change, dreams, grief, and healing as she journeys from one country to another, one life to the next.

Book excerpt: Bestselling author Michael Shermer delves into the unknown, from heretical ideas about the boundaries of the universe to Star Trek's lessons about chance and time A scientist pretends to be a psychic for a day-and fools everyone. An athlete discovers that good-luck rituals and getting into "the zone" may, or may not, improve his performance. A historian decides to analyze the data to see who was truly responsible for the Bounty mutiny. A son explores the possiblities of alternative and experimental medicine for his cancer-ravaged mother. And a skeptic realizes that it is time to turn the skeptical lens onto science itself. In each of the fourteen essays in Science Friction, psychologist and science historian Michael Shermer explores the very personal barriers and biases that plague and propel science, especially when scientists push against the unknown. What do we know and what do we not know? How does science respond to controversy, attack, and uncertainty? When does theory become accepted fact? As always, Shermer delivers a thought-provoking, fascinating, and entertaining view of life in the scientific age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I have seen yesterday. I know tomorrow.” This inscription in Tutankhamun’s tomb summarizes The Fifth Beginning. Here, archaeologist Robert L. Kelly explains how the study of our cultural past can predict the future of humanity. In an eminently readable style, Kelly identifies four key pivot points in the six-million-year history of human development: the emergence of technology, culture, agriculture, and the state. In each example, the author examines the long-term processes that resulted in a definitive, no-turning-back change for the organization of society. Kelly then looks ahead, giving us evidence for what he calls a fifth beginning, one that started about AD 1500. Some might call it “globalization,” but the author places it in its larger context: a five-thousand-year arms race, capitalism’s global reach, and the cultural effects of a worldwide communication network. Kelly predicts that the emergent phenomena of this fifth beginning will include the end of war as a viable way to resolve disputes, the end of capitalism as we know it, the widespread shift toward world citizenship, and the rise of forms of cooperation that will end the near-sacred status of nation-states. It’s the end of life as we have known it. However, the author is cautiously optimistic: he dwells not on the coming chaos, but on humanity’s great potential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translations of the Yi jing into western languages have been biased towards the yili ('meaning and pattern') tradition, whereas studies of the xiangshu ('image and number') tradition - which takes as its point of departure the imagery and numerology associated with divination and its hexagrams, trigrams, lines, and related charts and diagrams - has remained relatively unexplored. This major new reference work is organised as a Chinese-English encyclopedia, arranged alphabetically according to the pinyin romanisation, with Chinese characters appended. A character index as well as an English index is included. The entries are of two kinds: technical terms and various other concepts related to the 'image and number' tradition, and bio-bibliographical information on Chinese Yi jing scholars. Each entry in the former category has a brief explanation that includes references to the origins of the term, cross-references, and a reference to an entry giving a more comprehensive treatment of the subject.

Book excerpt: The I Ching (pronounced ee-ching) is the oldest and most respected oracle or divinatory system in the world. There are currently two translations available which offer somewhat conflicting interpretations - the popular Confucian version and an earlier Taoist version called Zhouyi. Reconstructed by twentieth-century scholars and archaeologists, Zhouyi presents the highly imaginative world of myth and ritual that is the hidden base of thousands of years of Eastern thought. Now, for the first time ever, Stephen Karcher fuses these two traditions using modern scholarship and archaeological and linguistic research, along with a wide background in Eastern philosophy and comparative religion, and presents them to the modern Western reader in a comprehensive and accessible new form. TOTAL I CHING is a complete oracle with instruction for immediate use in all life situations, but is also the first translation to detail the mythology of the divinatory system, offering a revolutionary new approach to the world's oldest wisdom tradition.

Book excerpt: A piercing tale of a Malaysian woman’s quest for independence that combines “the nuance of a poet with the ear of a born storyteller” (Julia Watson, coeditor of Women, Autobiography, Theory: A Reader). Li An, a young Malaysian woman of Chinese descent, seeks to understand herself as the country around her struggles to determine its own identity. And much like the politically charged atmosphere of 1969 Kuala Lumpur, Li An must confront the contradictions within. While she supports her nation’s fight to break free from the influence of British colonial rule, she cannot deny her love for the English poetry that she teaches. While she aspires to be an independent woman, she still finds herself married to the dependable Henry—until she meets an American Peace Corps volunteer named Chester Brookfield. Their encounter propels Li An on a quest of self-discovery, one that spans the divide between East and West, women and men, freedom and responsibility. Told with insight and wit, Lim’s sweeping debut novel demonstrates that while the journey is never easy, all roads lead, ultimately, to our true selves. “This elegantly crafted tale places Lim among the most imaginative and dexterous storytellers writing in the English language today.” —Rey Chow, author of Primitive Passions “A gripping novel centered around a strong, language-struck, culture-crossing Asian woman’s quest for independence.” —Rob Wilson, author of Reimagining the American Pacific “This felicitous novel is several books in one—Madame Butterfly transplanted to Malaysia, a feminist manifesto, and a commentary on the new Southeast Asia that has been emerging in recent years. Lim has woven these strands together in a colorful batik that is dazzling.” —Hisaye Yamamoto, author of Seventeen Syllables and Other Stories

Book excerpt: Your hand is a map reflecting your personality, your past, and your personal potential. This book's unique illustrated and interactive format is designed to give you instant access to the ancient art of palmistry. As you answer a series of simple questions, you'll discover how easy it really is--even the novice can begin reading hands immediately! You'll learn how to interpret the length of the palm and fingers, the four hand types, thumbs, marks on the fingers, the lines, fingernails, the mounts, timing in the palm, and even the meaning of rings. Palmistry Quick & Easy also includes information not found in other palmistry books. Notes for lovers, parents, managers, and astrologers will add depth and additional insights into the important relationships in your life. Without saying a word, your hands speak volumes about your personality. For example, the shape and size of your hand can help you gain insight into your strengths and weaknesses. Do you have a long palm with long, slender fingers? If so, you have a water hand, which means you are a sensitive, sympathetic, and intuitive person who probably relies on emotions to make decisions. You may have to be careful of being overly self-critical. Do you have a short palm with short fingers? Then you've got an earth hand, and you are practical, reliable, and productive, although you may have to watch out for becoming too single-minded or authoritarian. Palmistry is also fun--in any social gathering, mention that you read palms and you'll soon have a crowd of people eager to find out more about themselves. Palmistry Quick & Easy is just that: quick and easy. With its detailed question-and-answer format, you'll gain a deeper understanding of yourself and the people around you--just by listening to what their hands have to say.
