Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forests and Forestry in the United States The present forest area of the United States is estimated at acres, or something more than square miles.1 This is a little more than one-half the original forest area of the country. The stand of timber is estimated roughly at 746 billion cubic feet, of which 48 5 billion cubic feet is saw timber and 261 billion cubic feet cordwood. Almost three-fourths of the saw timber is in the remaining virgin forests. These remaining virgin forests are chiefly found in two widely separated regions, the South and far West, from which the United States is now drawing the bulk of its lumber cut. Together, they have 85 per cent of the total area still occupied by virgin growth, and 95 per cent of the re maining stand of virgin timber. The area of virgin growth in the far West is twice that in the South, with a stand in the ratio of 3% to 1. However, one - third of the forest land is considered nonproductive because it lacks the capacity to produce timber of commercial size or because the timber is so scattered and isolated it could not be economically harvested. In 1949, about million acres in this Survey Unit were classified as commercial forest land. The original survey in 1936 found very nearly the same acreage in commercial forest land, indicating little, if any, change during the period. It is interesting to note that marsh lands in the Everglades occupy a slightly greater acreage in the Unit than the forests do. The forest that will come after that - the South's fourth forest - can take almost any form desired. The changes now taking place in the third forest are cause for great concern. Our most recent surveys of forest resources show that net annual timber growth, after rising for decades, has begun to decline. Softwood timber removals are above net annual growth over large areas, and inventories are beginning to decrease. A similar situation is developing for hardwoods. If these recent trends continue, The preface to The South's Third Forest How It Can Meet Future Demands (southern Forest Resource Analy'sis Committee 1969) began: The analysis was developed to learn how the Sout-t achieved its vastly improved, if not wholly 'favorable, timber position over the past several decades and how this trend could be continued. In a general sense, this is also the basic purpose of the pres ent study. Concern about the timber situation in the South began in the early l9oo's, when it become evident that forests over much of the South were not regenerating after harvest. The most important economic question that had to be considered was: Can the forests be protected and conserved without seriously handicapping the development Of our lumber trade or seriously crippling lumber companies who are oper ating or wish to Operate in the South? It was also felt that the bringing together Of such a body of men as composed the personnel of the Southern Forestry Congress would focus the attention of the people of the Southern States as never before, on the need Of enforcing adequate measures for conserving our forests. It was realized that an acute situation does exist in these States, and that some legislation must be enacted in order to prevent the extermination Of a very valuable industry.
