Download or read book Environmental Impacts of Treated Wood written by Timothy G. Townsend and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-06-02 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to a heightened awareness of the possible adverse effect of treated wood, this book presents multidisciplinary research results and fundamental information on regulations, wood treatment alternatives, and documentation of environmental releases. It examines the impact of treated wood on water, soil, and organisms. Several chapters discuss ways to measure exposure and review various approaches to risk assessment and management. Case studies address human health effects of exposure. The book also presents state-of-the-art disposal technologies, new preservative compounds, and recent developments related to phase outs of certain treated wood products.

Book Synopsis The Role of Water Repellents and Chemicals in Controlling Mildew on Wood Exposed Outdoors by : William C. Feist
Download or read book The Role of Water Repellents and Chemicals in Controlling Mildew on Wood Exposed Outdoors written by William C. Feist and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The natural look of wood siding, and the retention of that look, has become increasingly popular over the past several years. Many new commercial formulations are being offered for use as clear natural wood finishes. A successful finish will retain color, control mold and mildew, and minimize weathering. Some of these formulations contain a chemical as a mildewcide (fungicide, preservative) and/or a water repellent, and some do not. To evaluate several chemicals (alone or in combination with water repellents) as components of natural finish formulations, we dip-treated ponderosa pine sapwood specimens in various formulations and exposed them on test fences in Mississippi, Wisconsin and Washington. Several chemicals were very effective at controlling mildew and maintaining the natural appearance of the exposed wood. Aqueous formulations of chromium salts were the most effective for up to 22 months exposure outdoors. Many chemical formulations in mineral spirits (including water repellents and wood sealers) were effective for 5 to 9 months of exposure, but their effectiveness was reduced with longer exposure. Of all the chemicals evaluated in mineral spirits formulations, only pentachlorophenol and copper naphthenate were found to be effective mildewcides after exposures of greater than 9 months. Their mildewcidal effectiveness was improved with the addition of a simple water repellent (paraffin wax), especially with exposures greater than 9 months. Mildew growth was markedly worse in the warm, humid climate of Mississippi than in Washington or Wisconsin. This means that natural wood finishes for climates similar to Mississippi must contain high concentrations of effective mildewcides for good performance. This paper should be useful to homeowners, architects, builders, and wood finish formulators.
Book Synopsis Operation and Cost of a Small Dehumidification Dry Kiln by : Richard D. Bergman
Download or read book Operation and Cost of a Small Dehumidification Dry Kiln written by Richard D. Bergman and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obtaining small quantities of custom kiln-dried lumber can be an expensive process for an individual woodworker. Building and operating a small kiln capable of drying custom cuts of lumber (such as slabs, bowl blanks) gives woodworkers another option. Our approach was to build and operate a small dehumidification dry kiln. The four charges of lumber ranged from 600 to 700 board feet (bf), and a woodworker with no dry-kiln experience operated the kiln. The first charge of mixed air-dried 4/4 hardwoods and softwoods was kiln-dried from 18.4% to 7.3% moisture content (MC) in 15 days with no casehardening. The second charge of 5/4 black cherry lumber was kiln-dried from 47.5% to 6.8% MC in 27 days with no casehardening, and the third charge of 4/4 northern red oak lumber was kiln-dried from 82.9% to 6.1% MC in 45 days and to 5.2% MC in 50 days with severe casehardening relieved by conditioning. A fourth charge of 300 bf 4/4 northern red oak, 200 bf of 4/4 shagbark hickory, and 100 bf of mixed 4/4 box elder and 4/4 black cherry was kiln-dried from 69.7% to 8.5% MC in 29 days with casehardening only in the northern red oak, and that was relieved by conditioning. We found that greater control of the dehumidifier operation earlier in the kiln schedule to maintain the safe drying rate would decrease the severity of casehardening when drying green northern red oak. New building materials, which are most of the initial cost, could be replaced by reused lumber. Drying small amounts of lumber using a dehumidification kiln is a suitable option for woodworkers even with limited knowledge of kilns.
