Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting in the Eastern United States Timber brings the highest price, of course, where the natural supply is becoming scarce. In 1900 the average value of sawlogs in the United States was per thousand feet, board measure; in Iowa, Indiana, and Ohio it was and respectively. The higher prices in these States were due partly to local scarcity and partly to the fact that the timber consisted almost' entirely of the more valuable hardwoods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting in the Northeastern and Lake States While the need for tree planting has not been felt in New England and the Lake States as keenly as in the treeless West, large areas of land within this region are fit only for forest growth. From an economic standpoint it is important that these lands should be put into a state Of productiveness. Extensive forest planting has thus far been somewhat discouraged by present methods of taxation and in part Of the region by the difficulty in securing adequate protection from fire. The true value of forest land and its rightful place among the permanent resources of the State are, however, becoming recognized, and an enlightened public sentiment is rapidly making this form of investment safe and profitable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting in the Lake States The land in need of reforestation to which this bulletin applies (fig. Lies in the northern two-thirds of the States of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. It includes the area north of a line from Saginaw Bay, in Michigan, westward through Sheboygan, Wis, thence northwestward through St. Croix Falls, lwis, to Wadena, Minn, and northward to Thief River Falls and the Canadian bound ary. This is the region from which the famous white pine lumber of the Lake States came, and which more recently has produced and continues to produce a large quantity of sugar maple, eastern hem lock, basswood, yellow birch, beech, spruces, balsam fir, and jack pine. It does not include the southern parts of the three States, where oaks, hickories, and maples are the characteristic trees usually occurring as small woodland areas on farms. The planting prob lems of the southern area of the Lake States are not the same as those of the north; they have already been covered to some extent in several published reports 6, 13, 14, 32, 33, 34, 38, 60, 6-5, 68, 69, The climate, topography, and soil, although varying locally, are for the region as a whole comparably uniform. The precipitation ranges from about 25 inches annually in parts of lower Michigan and western Minnesota to 40 inches in northwestern Wisconsin. For most of the region it is between 30 and 35 inches annually, of which 20 to 25 inches falls during the growing season from April 1 to September 80. The snowfall increases northward and is noticeably heavier and remains on the ground longer in the region of Lake Superior and in northern Minnesota than elsewhere in the region. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Tree Planting in the Plains The experimental plantings herein described in detail are given not only as a record Of the beginnings Of an important work, but as indi cating what are believed to be useful mixtures Of trees for planting in the West. Sufficient time has not elapsed, even in the Oldest plantings described, for final conclusions to be drawn; but the notes on kinds will be found of interest in connection with the experiments, and the whole is believed to afford a basis for selection Of trees for the various States included in the treeless area. While this bulletin has to do primarily with Western planting, it may be found a safe guide in many directions for forest planting within the timbered regions Of the country, especially as to general principles involved. Experiments in planting in cut-over lands in the pineries Of Minnesota and Pennsylvania have been begun by the Department, but are not yet sufficiently advanced to warrant even a progress report. This circumltance alone ought furely to be of much confidera tion in this climate, as our grounds in winter are ufually lo much lock'd up with froll, flooded with rains, or the weather lotherways lo intemperate, that our common planting feafon is confined to a fmall part of fpring and autumn. I lhould like wife imagine, that men of fortune, who {pend-the winters in town, could hardly be more agreeably entertained in the coun try, during the milder fealon, than in, 'as it were, creating (if'i maybe allowed the phrafe) verdant groves, thickets. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest Nursery: Collection of Tree Seeds and Propagation of Seedlings The art of raising forest-tree seedlings and planting trees is but little known among farmers, for whom it has very great economic interest. For the farmer of the Eastern wooded country, the study of how to grow trees has not yet reached, nor is it likely to reach, the same degree Of importance as for the Western farmer. The Eastern farmer has often to consider only what trees shall be allowed to grow up and what shall be introduced, while the Western farmer has to consider what may be grown and how. The greater interest centers about the Western planter because of his greater need for wood material, and also because the growth of trees under his conditions is most difficult. The importance of establishing wood lots or shelter belts on farms that lack them is no less Obvious than the necessity of raising the staple crops. The provident farmer can not afford to buy firewood, fence posts, or building timber any more than he can afford to buy corn and wheat. A part, if not all, of the wood material used on the farm can and should be grown there. The profit on this timber growth rightly belongs to the farmer, and it is therefore one which economic agricultu're can not neglect. The relative value Of wood lots in the prairie region and the wooded East is, Of course, different. To the prairie farmer the possession of a wood lot affording posts, rails, poles, and firewood is of very great importance, since, being in a treeless reglon and distant from the sources Of wood supply, he would otherwise be compelled to pay high prices for such material. The Eastern farmer is less dependent, even though his wood lot has been cut Off, for he lives in a wooded country, where posts, fuel, and lumber are comparatively cheap. The scope of the farmer's tree planting will necessarily be small. In order to be entirely successful, smaller tree-planting operations should give useful results within one man's lifetime. To accomplish this the farmer tree planter must confine his attention chie y to quick growing trees. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest Tree Culturist: A Treatise on the Cultivation of American Forest Trees, With Notes on the Most Valuable Foreign Species Some years since, while gratifying my taste for Horticultural experiments, I was led to plant seeds of many of our native forest trees. The results satisfied me that nothing was wanting but a better acquaintance with the nature and habits of these seeds to insure success with them as uniformly as with any others; consequently I gave the subject attention, and by observation and experiment learned how to manage not only the trees of our own forests, but many foreign varieties. I would not be understood to say that I have planted seeds and raised trees of every species and variety, but have experimented sufficiently with the different species as to know whereof I write. My success was such that the Farmer's Club of the American Institute desired me to give at one of their meetings an account of my experiments, which I did briefly. This was published as a portion of the Report of the meeting in the New York Tribune, and from that copied by other papers throughout the country. In consequence thereof, I have received many letters asking more definite information on different points, so many that I have been unable to reply to them so fully as I could have wished. The following pages were written for the purpose of giving such information as the public seem to desire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advice for Forest Planters: In Oklahoma and Adjacent Regions A large part of this region is practically without natural forests, and only a small part Of it is capable Of growing trees without cultivation. The Lowlands Belt is potentially a forest area, but westward of its borders climatic conditions become more and more inhospitable to tree growth. A large part of the region lies where prairies and plains merge. The rainfall decreases steadily from upward of 38 inches per year in the southeast to less than 12 inches in the northwest. This is due to a situation which gives the eastern portion the benefit of moisture-laden winds from the Gulf Of Mexico, but leaves the western portion under the control of the dry winds that descend from the Rockies - for in this case the common law that increasing altitude is correlated with increasing humidity is contradicted. The figures on the map (frontispiece) show how the average annual precipita tion decreases steadily from the eastern to the western stations, and emphasize the necessity for considering the rainfall and other climatic factors of each locality when making a planting plan. As a rule the seasonal distribution and character of the precipitation must be studied also, since it is Often true with trees as with field crops that a moderate rain during the growing season is of more value than a heavy rain after growth has ceased.
