Book excerpt: This e-volume documents the foreign policy of the Nixon-Ford administration toward South Asia, 1973-1976, and should be read in conjunction with Foreign Relations, 1969-1976, Volume E-7, Documents on South Asia, 1969-1972, and Foreign Relations, 1969-1976, Volume XI, South Asia Crisis, 1971 (GPO: Washington, March 2005; ISBN 0-16-072401-5). Both of these volumes document in depth the period of the Nixon administration, including the pivotal months of the India-Pakistan conflict of 1971 and its aftermath. Taken together, these three volumes provide comprehensive coverage of U.S. policy toward India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. In contrast with the previous volumes on South Asia during the Nixon administration, which were focused more tightly on the subcontinent's crises, volume E-8 also provides detailed coverage of the smaller South Asian states of Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka, and the Indian Ocean region, including the Republic of the Maldives. Read in conjunction with Foreign Relations, 1969-1976, Volume XXIV, 1969-1972 (GPO: forthcoming), this volume will also provide comprehensive coverage of U.S. Indian Ocean strategy during 1969-1976.

Book excerpt: Toward "Thorough, Accurate, and Reliable" explores the evolution of the Foreign Relations of the United States documentary history series from its antecedents in the early republic through the early 21st century implementation of its current mandate, the 1991 Foreign Relations statute. This book traces how policymakers and an expanding array of stakeholders translated values like "security," "legitimacy," and "transparency" into practice as they debated how to balance the government's obligation to protect sensitive information with its commitment to openness. Determining the "people's right to know" has fueled lively discussion for over two centuries, and this work provides important, historically informed perspectives valuable to policymakers and engaged citizens as that conversation continues. Policymakers, citizens, especially political science researchers, political scientists, academic, high school, public librarians and students performing research for foreign policy issues will be most interested in this volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume is part of a Foreign Relations subseries that documents the most important foreign policy issues of the Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford presidential administrations. The volume documents U.S. policy toward Chile from January 20, 1969 to September 24, 1973, when the Nixon administration announced its extension of diplomatic recognition to the military junta under General Augusto Pinochet. The primary focus of Volume XXI is on the attitudes adopted and actions taken by the U.S. Government toward the installation of two successive Chilean presidents: the election and inauguration of Salvador Allende in September 1970 and the military coup d'état of General Augusto Pinochet in September 1973. The editors of this volume also compiled an extensive electronic supplement, Foreign Relations, 1969-1976, volume E-16, Documents on Chile, 1969-1973, which, when released, will be available online at the Office of the Historian website. Additional documentation is scheduled for publication in the subsequent compilation on Chile in Foreign Relations, 1969-1976, volume E-11, Documents on South America, 1973-1976, Part 2"--Overview.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of a Foreign Relations subseries that documents the most important issues in the foreign policy of Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford. The volume on American Republics has been divided into two parts: Part One, this volume, documents the formulation of a new U.S. policy towards the region as a whole and bilateral relations with fourteen countries and one British possession: The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, and Nicaragua--during the second Nixon and Ford administrations; Part Two, forthcoming, documents bilateral relations with countries in South America. U.S. policy towards Latin America during this period centered on establishing what Henry A. Kissinger called a "New Dialogue" with the region. Launched in October 1973, just days after Kissinger took office as Secretary of State, the "New Dialogue" was envisioned as a constructive way for the United States to meet the challenge posed by the perceived emergence of a Latin American regional bloc. The initiative called for regular meetings of foreign ministers to address issues of mutual concern and aimed to restore a sense that a special relationship existed between the United States and its neighbors to the south. By 1976, however, U.S. officials had largely abandoned the idea of pursuing a unified regional policy, as called for by the "New Dialogue." Instead, recognizing that Latin America was not a monolithic bloc, the Ford administration focused more on bilateral relations with the nations of the hemisphere. As this volume documents, during the Nixon and Ford administrations immigration and narcotics control emerged as key issues in bilateral relations, particularly with Mexico. Other themes that occur are water salinity, economic concerns, and investment disputes. Finally, military regimes controlled many Central American governments during the 1970s, and some early hints of the unrest that generated the civil wars of the 1980s appear in the documents in this volume"--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of a Foreign Relations subseries that documents the most important issues in the foreign policy of Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford. The volume on American Republics is divided into two parts: Part Two documents U.S. relations with South America between 1973 and 1976. U.S. relations with Chile through mid-September 1973 are covered in Foreign Relations, 1969-1976, Volume XXI, Chile, 1969-1973, and U.S. relations with Panama are covered in Foreign Relations, 1969-1976, Volume XXII, Panama, 1973-1976. The eight compilations herein illustrate both the formulation of a new U.S. policy toward the region as a whole: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile (beginning in late September 1973), Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. U.S. policy toward Latin America during this period centered on establishing what Henry A. The initiative called for regular meetings of foreign ministers to address issues of mutual concern and aimed to restore a sense that a special relationship existed among the United States and its neighbors to the south. As this volume documents, increasing congressional and public concern over human rights issues affected the making of U.S. policy toward much of Latin America during the mid-1970s. These concerns focused to a large extent on Chile and Argentina, where military regimes aimed to stamp out what they saw as Communist-inspired efforts at subversion. Finally, several compilations (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay) include documentation on Operation Condor.

The primary focus of Volume E-16 is on the attitudes adopted and actions taken by the U.S. Government toward the installation of two successive Chilean presidents: the election and inauguration of Salvador Allende in September 1970 and the military coup d'état of General Augusto Pinochet in September 1973. In contrast to the printed volume, this supplement includes a selection of Presidential tape recordings, as transcribed by the editors, which add context and detail to formal records on President Nixon's posture toward President Allende, as well as several documents on human rights violations in the aftermath of the Pinochet coup d'état"--Publisher's description.
