Nepal's advantages include privileged access to a well-disposed neighboring country with a large market; a low-wage, trainable workforce; a flourishing local entrepreneurial culture in both small and large business; and established international recognition, thanks to tourist landmarks. Nepal has attracted modest FDI in niche sectors such as tourism, light manufacturing (apparel) and mineral deposits (lime stone). Investment is mainly in low-technology, labour-intensive production. The impact of FDI has also been modest, primarily in job creation. While the FDI laws were liberalized in 1992, there are still obstacles that investors face. The challenge for Nepal is to put in place an investor-friendly business climate that will complement its small bureaucracy. In the short term, Nepal can attract more FDI in its niche sectors such as tourism and production of herbs with special investment packages. Also, Nepal has to be proactive to derive further advantage from the Trade Treaty with India and its LDC trade preferences with developed countries. Improvement in the human resource base is needed in order to attract high-technology FDI.

Book excerpt: The paper aims to explore the current scenario of foreign direct investment in Nepal. Nepal is passing through transitional economy. Being least developed countries it has been facing huge resources gap which to be fulfilled attracting capital from private sector. Foreign investment is most important resource for the economic development of the country. It helps to stimulate competition, productivity and innovation. Further, it generates income and employment opportunities resulting in higher wages, competitive price, more revenue, skills and technology transfer and increased foreign exchange earnings. There is no debate that FDI plays significantly vital role for the country like Nepal. To attract the foreign investment in Nepal, government should pay proper attention to create investment friendly environment through revision of acts, rules and policies in one hand and maintain law and order in another hand.

Book excerpt: During the 1990s, the governments of South Asian countries acted as ‘facilitators’ to attract FDI. As a result, the inflow of FDI increased. However, to become an attractive FDI destination as China, Singapore, or Brazil, South Asia has to improve the local conditions of doing business. This book, based on research that blends theory, empirical evidence, and policy, asks and attempts to answer a few core questions relevant to FDI policy in South Asian countries: Which major reforms have succeeded? What are the factors that influence FDI inflows? What has been the impact of FDI on macroeconomic performance? Which policy priorities/reforms needed to boost FDI are pending? These questions and answers should interest policy makers, academics, and all those interested in FDI in the South Asian region and in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign direct investment (FDI) has grown dramatically and is now the largest and most stable source of private capital for developing countries and economies in transition, accounting for nearly 50 percent of all those flows. Meanwhile, the growing role of FDI in host countries has been accompanied by a change of attitude, from critical wariness toward multinational corporations to sometimes uncritical enthusiasm about their role in the development process. What are the most valuable benefits and opportunities that foreign firms have to offer? What risks and dangers do they pose? Beyond improving the micro and macroeconomic "fundamentals" in their own countries and building an investment-friendly environment, do authorities in host countries need a proactive (rather than passive) policy toward FDI? In one of the most comprehensive studies on FDI in two decades, Theodore Moran synthesizes evidence drawn from a wealth of case literature to assess policies toward FDI in developing countries and economies in transition. His focus is on investment promotion, domestic content mandates, export-performance requirements, joint-venture requirements, and technology-licensing mandates. The study demonstrates that there is indeed a large, energetic, and vital role for host authorities to play in designing policies toward FDI but that the needed actions differ substantially from conventional wisdom on the topic. Dr. Moran offers a pathbreaking agenda for host governments, aimed at maximizing the benefits they can obtain from FDI while minimizing the dangers, and suggests how they might best pursue this agenda.

Book excerpt: Since the turn of the century, the liberalization of capital markets has caused exponential growth of foreign direct investment (FDI). However, developments in recent years have shown that countries have placed limitations on foreign investors. In addition, dynamic economic developments in the surge of financial and economic crisis and later have clearly exposed the possibility that FDI will change course and result in foreign direct divestment. This book looks at specific country experiences related to FDI as well as determinants of FDI that could be connected to the new course of divestment.
