Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Competition in Horticultural Products The past decade has witnessed a remarkable expansion in the production and export of fresh and processed fruits and vegetables by a number of foreign countries. Three of the most prominent participants in this growth have been the Republic of China (taiwan), Mexico, and South Africa. The development and expansion of foreign fruit and vegetable production is continuing for many reasons. Certainly among the most important are the comparatively high per acre monetary returns realized from these commodities, greater demand in world markets as a result of rising incomes, and large labor supplies available at low wages. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canadian Imports of Horticultural Products U.s. Exporters of horticultural products to the Canadian market today are facing much greater competi tion from a larger number of suppliers than they did 10 years ago. This heightened competition resulted from a number of developments during the decade of the sixties. One of the leading factors was the pressing need for foreign exchange in some of the less-developed coun tries. In order to acquire foreign exchange, government planners in these nations encouraged horticultural pur suits, which provide attractive returns per unit of labor. The growing of horticultural products was additionally attractive because it helped relieve burdensome surpluses of the more traditional agricultural products cultivated in these countries. Download or read book Plants and Vegetation written by Paul Keddy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants make up 99.9 percent of the world's living matter, provide food and shelter, and control the Earth's climate. The study of plant ecology is therefore essential to understanding the biological functions and processes of the biosphere. This vibrant introductory textbook integrates important classical themes with recent ideas, models and data. The book begins with the origin of plants and their role in creating the biosphere as the context for discussing plant functional types and evolutionary patterns. The coverage continues logically through the exploration of causation with chapters, amongst others, on resources, stress, competition, predation, and mutualism. The book concludes with a chapter on conservation, addressing the concern that as many as one-third of all plant species are at risk of extinction. Each chapter is enriched with striking and unusual examples of plants (e.g., stone plants, carnivorous plants) and plant habitats (e.g., isolated tropical tepui, arctic cliffs). Paul Keddy writes in a lively and thought-provoking style which will appeal to students at all levels.

Book Synopsis Breeding For Ornamentals: Classical and Molecular Approaches by : A. Vainstein
Download or read book Breeding For Ornamentals: Classical and Molecular Approaches written by A. Vainstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-03-31 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we bring together the most up-to-date information on developments, both basic and applied, that already have or are expected to impact the field of ornamental breeding. These include classical and molecular techniques, traditional and high-throughput approaches and future trends. Since not only professional scientists, but also thousands of future scientists/students as well as amateur breeders around the world contribute heavily to the field of ornamental breeding, an introductory section dealing with the basics of molecular and classical genetics and the evolution of floral diversity is included. This should enable the reader to bridge the gap between traditional and molecular genetics. Classical approaches to the creation/selection of genetic variability, including mutation and tissue culture-aided breeding, are presented. Processes affecting ornamental and agronomic traits at the molecular level are delineated, along with an in-depth analysis of developments in the protection of intellectual property rights. The thoughts and strategies of molecular and classical geneticists, which are not always complementary or even compatible, are presented side by side in this book, and will serve to spark the imaginations of breeders as well as students entering the exciting world of state-of-the-art ornamentals.
