Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign and United States Upland Cotton, Quality Comparisons and Evaluations, 1955 Crop The property group and overall quality indexes for each grade and staple length of United States and foreign cotton for which comparisons were made are shown in tables 1 through 12. Also shown in these tables for each grade and fiber property are the weight factors assigned, the original test data, the degree of perfection index (measure of the property's value in terms of a hypothetical superior cotton), and the weighted quality points. The weighted quality points were obtained by multiplying the weight factor by the degree of perfection index. The weighted quality points were then divided by the sum of the weight factors to obtain the quality indexes. An explanation of the procedure used in establishing values for the properties of the superior cotton for the sample lots tested and compared, and in the development of the quality indexes, is included in the sections beginning on page 18. Book Synopsis Yield Gains in Major U.S. Field Crops by : Stephen Smith
Download or read book Yield Gains in Major U.S. Field Crops written by Stephen Smith and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When humankind began to save seed to plant for the next season, they did so hoping to secure a food supply for the future. With that came the inevitable question: Will it be enough? Scientists today are still asking that question. Our dependence on domesticated cultivated varieties has never been greater, even as increasing populations strain our resource base. This book provides a fascinating snapshot-in-time account of the productivity status of all major U.S. field crops. Each crop has a different story to tell. Plant breeding, biotechnology, and agronomy have shaped these stories. It is imperative that we learn from them to ensure continued productivity. The solution is long-term stewardship and the most effective use of our critical resources—water, soil, genetic resources, and human intellect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an analytical summary and a critical synthesis of research at the International Water Management Institute over the past decade under its evolving research paradigm known popularly as 'more crop per drop'. The research synthesized here covers the full range of issues falling in the larger canvas of water-food-health-environment interface. Besides its immediate role in sharing knowledge with the research, donor, and policy communities, this volume also has a larger purpose of promoting a new way of looking at the water issues within the broader development context of food, livelihood, health and environmental challenges. More crop per drop: Revisiting a research paradigm contrasts the acquired wisdom and fresh thinking on some of the most challenging water issues of our times. It describes new tools, approaches, and methodologies and also illustrates them with practical application both from a global perspective and within the local and regional contexts of Asia and Africa. Since this volume brings together all major research works of IWMI, including an almost exhaustive list of citations, in one single set of pages, it is very valuable not only as a reference material for researchers and students but also as a policy tool for decision-makers and development agencies.
Book Synopsis Hoosiers and the American Story by : Madison, James H.
Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
