Book Synopsis THE COAL COST CROSSOVER: ECONOMIC VIABILITY OF EXISTING COAL COMPARED TO NEW LOCAL WIND AND SOLAR RESOURCES by : Eric Gimon
Download or read book THE COAL COST CROSSOVER: ECONOMIC VIABILITY OF EXISTING COAL COMPARED TO NEW LOCAL WIND AND SOLAR RESOURCES written by Eric Gimon and published by Vibrant Clean Energy, LLC. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America has officially entered the “coal cost crossover” – where existing coal is increasingly more expensive than cleaner alternatives. Today, local wind and solar could replace approximately 74 percent of the U.S. coal fleet at an immediate savings to customers. By 2025, this number grows to 86 percent of the coal fleet. This analysis complements existing research into the costs of clean energy undercutting coal costs, by focusing on which coal plants could be replaced locally (within 35 miles of the existing coal plant) at a saving. It suggests local decision-makers should consider plans for a smooth shut-down of these old plants—assessing their options for reliable replacement of that electricity, as well as financial options for communities dependent on those plants. This report should begin a longer conversation about the most cost-effective replacement for coal, which may include combinations of local or remote wind, solar, transmission, storage, and demand response.

Book Synopsis The Outlook for Thermal Coal by : Boum Jong Choe
Download or read book The Outlook for Thermal Coal written by Boum Jong Choe and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses an econometric simulation model of world energy markets to project the competitive supply, demand, and prices for thermal coal as a part of overall energy balance projections. Under the assumptions of moderate economic growth in the market-economy countries and a pricing path for OPEC oil that remains relatively stable for the 80's but increases steadily in the 1990's, the market-economies' demand for thermal coal is projected to increase. The share of coal in total energy consumption is expected to remain constant for the 1982-90 period but increase slightly in the 1990's. Uncertainties of economic growth, nuclear power supplies, and price elasticities of fuel demand are also shown to be the key elements that can substantially change the future of thermal coal. In view of the basically competitive structure of the world coal industry, it is reasonable to expect that, in the long term, the international coal prices will not increase beyond its long term costs of supply.
