Book excerpt: Despite the wealth of laboratory studies, the effects of local predation risk on the behaviour and ecology of a prey species under natural conditions have rarely been examined. In Chapter 1, I tested the hypothesis that juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) use both chemical and visual information to assess predation risk under natural conditions. Both young-of-the-year (YOY) and parr salmon exhibited antipredator responses when exposed to a chemical alarm cue and exposure to alarm cues influenced their response to a visual threat. While YOY and parr differed in the type and intensity of antipredator responses, both chemical and visual cues are used in an additive manner. In Chapter 2, I tested the prediction that YOY use chemical alarm cues to assess the predation risk of alternative habitats and decide where to settle over a two-week period following emergence. In seven similar reaches of Catamaran Brook, New Brunswick, I established three contiguous sections where I manipulated the perceived predation risk by releasing alarm cues versus a stream water control. The density of YOY decreased in risky sections and increased in control and untreated buffer sections, whereas the density of parr was not affected. Clearly, YOY salmon can assess and select habitats based on the perceived level of predation risk. If one assumes that predation risk is a cost, optimality models predict that territory size will decrease with increasing predation risk. In Chapter 3, I examined whether both acute and chronic predation risk influences the territorial behaviour of YOY. When exposed to a single dose of chemical alarm cue, YOY salmon decreased the number of switches between foraging stations, but did not change their territory size or foraging rate. When exposed to chemical alarm cue over a two week period, YOY salmon reduced the size of their territories, but did not change their foraging rate or number of switches. Clearly, YOY adjusted their territorial behaviour in response to both acute and chronic increases in perceived predation risk, but in different ways. Together, my results suggest that predation risk influences not only short-term (immediate) anti-predator behaviour, but is also an important component of habitat selection and shapes territorial behaviour over longer periods.

Book excerpt: Due to overfishing, land-use change, and climate change, many freshwater salmonid populations are at risk or already imperiled. Research addressing the biological mechanisms behind habitat selection is important if these populations are to be protected and restored. A literature review of salmonid habitat selection models has shown there is a lack of habitat selection data that relate a fitness surrogate, such as energy intake, to habitat selection. Descriptive studies of habitat selection, such as comparisons between use and availability, generally cannot elucidate the actual mechanisms producing differential selection of habitats. To identify potential factors affecting the decline of Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in Alaska, we examined the relationship between reactive distance, prey capture success, and water velocity for juvenile Chinook Salmon and used these results test the net energy gain habitat selection model of Grossman et al. (2002). We conducted two experiments, the first with 27 fish between 58 and 84 mm standard length (SL) and weight between 2.8 and 7.5 grams, and the second using pairs of dominant and subordinate fish (i.e., larger and smaller, mean difference= 7 mm (SL)) to test for the effects of dominance on prey capture success. Using an artificial stream tank, we tested juvenile Chinook Salmon at 10 cm/s velocity increments (10 cm/s to 60 cm/s) using frozen brine shrimp (Artemia spp.) as prey. Reactive distances for single fish trials averaged 32.7 cm and did not show significant velocity effects (p=0.66). Velocity was inversely related to prey capture success in a non-linear manner (p

Book excerpt: From 1998-2000, laboratory studies were conducted to examine factors that impact saltwater-entry behavior and saltwater preference (SWP) of juvenile chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. These factors included bacterial kidney disease, stress and the presence of trout, O. mykiss. An additional study investigated the orientation of the startle response of chinook salmon within a salinity gradient. All experiments were conducted in 757-1 tanks in which a stable, vertical salinity gradient was established. SWP was decreased in fish suffering from bacterial kidney disease (31 ± 20.0%), compared with control fish (85 ± 17.6%). A mild chasing stressor resulted in a 26% decrease in SWP relative to unstressed fish. After a severe handling stressor, only 20% of fish preferred salt water, compared with 100% of unstressed controls. After exposure to an overhead predator model, severely stressed fish descended into the saltwater layer, but this response was transient. The presence of non-aggressive steelhead trout did not affect SWP of chinook salmon. Chinook salmon stocked with rainbow trout displayed decreased SWP. Aggression levels in tanks with rainbow trout were higher than in tanks with only chinook salmon. The orientation of the startle response was affected by the presence of salt water. Fish that preferred salt water within a gradient responded by moving horizontally within the saltwater layer. In contrast, control fish (held only in freshwater) moved vertically within the water colunm when startled. Prior preference for salt water superseded the inclination to move upward in the water column when startled. Smoltification involves physiological, behavioral and morphological changes that prepare healthy chinook salmon for seawater residence. However, disease, stress and aggressive interactions can decrease the SWP of fish at this life history stage. Avoidance of salt water during estuarine outmigration is likely maladaptive, and may have ecological ramifications including increased risk of avian predation during outmigration and decreased fitness in the marine environment.

There are seven species of Pacific salmon, five occurring on both the North American and Asian continents (sockeye, pink, chum, chinook, and coho) and two (masu and amago) only in Asia. The life cycle of the Pacific salmon begins in the autumn when the adult female deposits eggs that are fertilized in gravel beds in rivers or lakes. The young emerge from the gravel the following spring and will either migrate immediately to salt water or spend one or more years in a river or lake before migrating. Migrations in the ocean are extensive during the feeding and growing phase, covering thousands of kilometres. After one or more years the maturing adults find their way back to their home river, returning to their ancestral breeding grounds to spawn. They die after spawning and the eggs in the gravel signify a new cycle. Upon this theme Pacific salmon have developed many variations, both between as well as within species. Pacific Salmon Life Histories provides detailed descriptions of the different life phases through which each of the seven species passes. Each chapter is written by a scientist who has spent years studying and observing a particular species of salmon.
