Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Fowler is doing his best not to fall in love with Steve Lopes, a piano player with eyes as green as willow shoots and hair the color of polished chestnuts. Love is just not in the cards for an actor whose career is on the rise, and who has just landed the triple part in Shakespear´s "Hamlet;" the role that Shakespear himself is likely to have played. But Steve is really hard to get out of his head, and, he fears, his heart. Then there is the fact that Steve wants him to do an ´environmental´ performance, playing his non-existant cousin Toby in order to solve some long-term family problems. Steve was raised by his beloved Aunt Minerva who, it appears, has imaginary relatives as well as real ones. And the real ones want to get their hands on her money. To top it off, there is a serial killer who has been murdering Gay men, and the killer has Michael at the head of his hit list. Set in the 1980s in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Mason Powell´s Gay romantic crime novel is a tightly plotted tale of murder and madness, of theater and people whose lives put the theater to shame. It is also a tour of places as they were and characters as they are likely to remain in California: a state which holds its zanies to be its greatest natural resource. "If you love a good love story, you will love this novel. If you love a good mystery, you will keep turning the pages. If you loved "Tales of the City," you will want to return to the golden days of the 80s in San Francisco with this book." ---Diana L. Paxson Author of "Priestess of Avalon"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mind-boggling tale of inspired crime and brotherly betrayel told by Firoze Peer - amateur philosopher and mystic, artful memoirist, green-eyed conspirator. Born into a crooked Johannesburg family and raised in the tradition of family solidarity and trust, Firoze and his identical twin brother, Ashraf, are employed from an early age in the family business. Firoze has the finer mind - he keeps the books and is encouraged to study mathematics by his uncle, Ten Percent Farouk. Ashraf has a talent for drawing which is, initially, put to use in the diamond trade in the creation of counterfeit certificates of rare artistry. From such beginnings, the brothers' lives progress through experiences that span the globe: from a masterful heist at Sun City to a wild pursuit on the Pakistan border to forging passports for terrorists to stealing expensive suits at a Monaco hotel to appearing at the White House under false pretences. Green-eyed Thieves has everything a reader could want: fast-paced action, a startling conclusion, and an investigation of the most frightening idea that Firoze can imagine: the idea that all men are brothers. More than that, it offers a pleasure that may well be greater than the illicit joys of the brothers' lives - the bliss of language.

Book excerpt: In The Gay Male Sleuth in Print and Film (2005), scholar Drewey Wayne Gunn examined the history of gay detectives beginning with the first recognized gay novel, The Heart in Exile, which appeared in 1953. In the years since the original edition's publication, hundreds of novels and short stories in this sub-genre have been produced, and Gunn has unearthed many additional representations previously unrecorded. In this new edition, Gunn provides an overview of milestones in the development of gay detectives over the last several decades. Also included in this volume is an annotated list of novels, short stories, plays, graphic novels, comic strips, films, and television series with gay detectives, gay sleuths of secondary importance, and non-sleuthing gay policemen. The most complete listing available--including the only listing of early gay pulp novels, present-day male-to-male romances, and erotic films--this new edition brings the work up to date with publications missed in the first edition, particularly cross-genre mysteries, early pulps, and some hard-to-find volumes. The Gay Male Sleuth in Print and Film: A History and Annotated Bibliography lists all printed works in English (including translations) presently known to include gay detectives (such as amateur sleuths, police detectives, private investigators, and investigative reporters), from the 1929 play Rope until the present day. It includes all films in English, subtitled or dubbed, from the screen version of Rope in 1948 and the launch of the independent film Spy on the Fly in 1966 through the end of 2011. Complete with two appendices--a bibliography of sources and a list of Lambda Literary Awards--and indexes of titles, detectives, and actors, this extensively revised and updated reference will prove invaluable to mystery collectors, researchers, aficionados of the subgenre, and those devoted to GLBTQ studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telling Lies About the Wolves is a collection of fourteen short stories by Mason Powell, some of them previously unpublished, most previously uncollected. Those who know the work of Mason Powell primarily from his intense and often frightening novel The Brig may be surprised at this collection of his early, literary, tales. While they primarily deal with Gay characters, their insights about the human condition reach across the boundaries by which humanity too frequently catagorizes itself into us and them, and reveal eternal truths (some of them not very pretty, but nonetheless true) such as are at the heart of all good fiction. There are homoerotic moments, to be sure, but they are handled with a restraint and delicacy which one might not expect from this author. The great surprise of this collection is the variety of the stories. Next to cynicism there is sentiment. Next to the grimly realistic, there is the heroic, which usually emerges in us ordinary mortals only in the most extraordianry circumstances. In some places the author achieves a kind of mystical bond with the reader which can be downright alarming. And there is humor, sometimes subtle, sometimes slapstick; never a thing one associates with a writer most famed for erotica. The short story, as a form, has been out of favor for a while. With the shortened attention span of the average person these days, and art of all kinds coming in bytes rather than banquets, it might very well be that the time for a revival of short reading has come. If so, Mr. Powell1s collection comes at a most welcome juncture. If you have never read any fiction about Gay people, this might be a good place to start. If you have, and your tastes are sharpened, you may find this a feast of many courses. --Olin T. Fredegar

This relationship is not only seen in musical genres but in a prolific output of novels for adults and children that contain musical themes, characters, and/or settings. This book is the result of many years of research into fiction that has this musical connection. Focusing on novels mainly from the twentieth century, this volume contains an extensive annotated list featuring works for adult, young adult and juvenile audiences and also represents a wide range of musical genre from classical to jazz to rap. Following the annotations, this book provides a comprehensive listing of all titles sorted by reading level and by musical genres to assist librarians, educators, and readers in finding the precise book for a given need or interest.

Book excerpt: “Unsparing in her depiction of the disease’s harrowing effects, neuroscientist Genova also celebrates humanity.” —People “Sometimes it’s easier to tell truth in fiction…And she tells it with heart and hope.” —NPR “Her juxtaposition of scientific detail with compassionate, heartfelt storytelling is unparalleled.” —Bookreporter “Every Note Played will grip and gut you.” —The Boston Globe From neuroscientist and New York Times bestselling author of Still Alice comes a powerful exploration of regret, forgiveness, freedom, and what it means to be alive. An accomplished concert pianist, Richard received standing ovations from audiences all over the world in awe of his rare combination of emotional resonance and flawless technique. Every finger of his hands was a finely calibrated instrument, dancing across the keys and striking each note with exacting precision. That was eight months ago. Richard now has ALS, and his entire right arm is paralyzed. His fingers are impotent, still, devoid of possibility. The loss of his hand feels like a death, a loss of true love, a divorce—his divorce. He knows his left arm will go next. Three years ago, Karina removed their framed wedding picture from the living room wall and hung a mirror there instead. But she still hasn’t moved on. Karina is paralyzed by excuses and fear, stuck in an unfulfilling life as a piano teacher, afraid to pursue the path she abandoned as a young woman, blaming Richard and their failed marriage for all of it. When Richard becomes increasingly paralyzed and is no longer able to live on his own, Karina becomes his reluctant caretaker. As Richard’s muscles, voice, and breath fade, both he and Karina try to reconcile their past before it’s too late. Poignant and powerful, Every Note Played is a masterful exploration of redemption and what it means to find peace inside of forgiveness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Spellbinding Psychological Thriller with many Shocking Twists. A tale of greed, deception, sibling rivalry, parental abuse and estrangement. Harrowing story of what happens when a loving son wants to provide comfort and care for his ailing mother suffering with dementia in her last years. Met with only animosity, jealousy and betrayal from his siblings, who are more interested in control than compassion. He perseveres through roadblock after roadblock__often going up against unscrupulous, attorneys, judges, and caregivers. The jealous brother used skeptical ways to obtain the power of attorney for their mother even during her attempts to remove him as sole power of attorney. He then uses this position and the authority it gave ‘him as ‘power for revenge’ against his brother. The jealous brother becomes “The Green Eyed Monster.” Shakespeare created this name for jealousy in his play, Othello to dramatize jealousy and it’s powerful and dangerous ability to destroy. Joined by their sister as he becomes more callous, relentless, contemptible and cruel towards their brother by wrongful use of his authority, ignoring the effect their actions were having on their 91-year-old mother in the final stage of dementia. She started to become more withdrawn, confused and broken-hearted. A lawsuit was filed against the jealous brother in an attempt to stop his cruelty. Book Review 1: "Craig Clovis has woven a fascinating tale of greed, deception, sibling rivalry and parental abuse. Told in a clear, straightforward manner, this is a harrowing story of what happens when a loving son wants to provide comfort and care for his ailing mother in her last declining years. Met with only animosity, jealousy and betrayal from his siblings (who are more interested in control than compassion) he preserves through roadblock after roadblock – often going up against unscrupulous attorneys, local judges and law enforcement officers. The writer understands that the end of life should be a dignified, peacefu transition and chronicles his efforts to make it just that for his mother. This first-time novelist deftly captures the complete and exhausting frustration of the trials of this phase of life, all made worse while battling family members who should be helping instead of hindering the process. This is a must read for every parent as a cautionary lesson on the consequences that can be created by their decisions as to who handles their affairs. It should also encourage every child to sit down with their parents and discuss their affairs in detail before these matters are turned over to others who may not have their best interests in mind. As heartbreaking as it is to follow the mental decline of a beloved parent, it’s heartwarming to read about a son who was there to fight for his mother, through thick and thin, until her last breath." -- Robert Wasinger Paris, France Marketing Executive, Writer, Actor, Retired Book Review 2: “This is more than a story of a family estrangement and two brothers’ disputes. It’s a story about the power and beauty of a son’s love for his mother; an ageless story anyone coming to terms with the aging of a parent will want to read. While it touched my heart, it also gave me plenty of reasons to be grateful to be an only child!” -- Keith Garton-Red Chair Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Havana is among the world’s leading cinematic locales. In films made beyond the island as well as those created by local cineastes, Havana is depicted as a vibrant Caribbean city. The quantity and quality of the works representing this tropical cityscape attest to the prominence of this film location and underscore the need for a book dedicated to it. World Film Locations: Havana situates Havana as a modern city in pre-Revolutionary times, noting the architectural and cultural shifts evident during the revolution, and comments on recent reconfigurations of the city and its inhabitants in the wake of global forces. Among the forty-six scene reviews chosen to show the city in all its multifaceted-glory, films such as Our Man in Havana, I Am Cuba, Hello Hemingway, Habana Blues and Chico and Rita are bookended by seven insightful essays. The essays look at the history of revolutionary cinema in Cuba and consider documentary films, from the Latin American Newsreel to avant-garde experimental work, including the island’s documentary tradition showcasing local faces and places that have paved the way for present-day media and audio-visual art. The essays also explore the multifaceted film culture of the capital, the cine club movement, historic cinemas and film venues around the city, the abundance of film festivals such as the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema and film-themed cafeterias, restaurants, bookstores and markets.
