Book excerpt: For One Brief Moment is the story of one woman's struggle against cancer, a battle that many others fought both before and after her. Some have won, some have lost and with some the battle still rages. But none have gone forth to meet this evil and merciless foe with greater courage or with more loving support from family and friends than Joann, whose story is told here. This is not a happy story. It is told with sadness and pain and sorrow and with a sense of guilt on the part of some who survive. But it is also a story of bravery and strength and determination and endurance and of the love that helped to light her lonely way.

Book Synopsis A Brief Apology for a Catholic Moment by : Jean-Luc Marion
Download or read book A Brief Apology for a Catholic Moment written by Jean-Luc Marion and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely new work by one of France’s premier philosophers, A Brief Apology for a Catholic Moment offers insight into what “catholic” truly means. In this short, accessible book, Jean-Luc Marion braids the sense of catholic as all-embracing and universal into conversation about what it is to be Catholic in the present moment. A Brief Apology for a Catholic Moment tackles complex issues surrounding church-state separation and addresses a larger Catholic audience that transcends national boundaries, social identities, and linguistic differences. Marion insists that Catholic universalism, with its core of communion and community, is not an outmoded worldview, but rather an outlook that has the potential to counter the positivist rationality and nihilism at the core of our current political moment, and can help us address questions surrounding liberalism and religion and what is often presented as tension between “Islam and the West.” As an inviting and sophisticated Catholic take on current political and social realities—realities that are not confined to France alone—A Brief Apology for a Catholic Moment is a valuable contribution to a larger conversation.
Download or read book Athletic Shorts written by Chris Crutcher and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-09-22 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These six powerful short stories chronicle bits of the lives of characters, major and minor, who have walked the rugged terrain of Chris Crutcher's earlier works. They also introduce some new and unforgettable personalities who may well be heard from again in future books. As with all Crutcher's work, these are stories about athletes, and yet they are not sport stories. They are tales of love and death, bigotry and heroism, of real people doing their best even when that best isn't very good. Crutcher's straightforward style and total honesty have earned him an admiring audience and made readers of many nonreaders.

Book excerpt: For more than eighty years the Jewish Daily Forward's legendary advice column, "A Bintel Brief" ("a bundle of letters") dispensed shrewd, practical, and fair-minded advice to its readers. Created in 1906 to help bewildered Eastern European immigrants learn about their new country, the column also gave them a forum for seeking advice and support in the face of problems ranging from wrenching spiritual dilemmas to petty family squabbles to the sometimes hilarious predicaments that result when Old World meets New. Isaac Metzker's beloved selection of these letters and responses has become for today's readers a remarkable oral record not only of the varied problems of Jewish immigrant life in America but also of the catastrophic events of the first half of our century. Foreword and Notes by Harry Golden

Book Synopsis The Power of Moments by : Chip Heath
Download or read book The Power of Moments written by Chip Heath and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling authors of Switch and Made to Stick explore why certain brief experiences can jolt us and elevate us and change us—and how we can learn to create such extraordinary moments in our life and work. While human lives are endlessly variable, our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: elevation, insight, pride, and connection. If we embrace these elements, we can conjure more moments that matter. What if a teacher could design a lesson that he knew his students would remember twenty years later? What if a manager knew how to create an experience that would delight customers? What if you had a better sense of how to create memories that matter for your children? This book delves into some fascinating mysteries of experience: Why we tend to remember the best or worst moment of an experience, as well as the last moment, and forget the rest. Why “we feel most comfortable when things are certain, but we feel most alive when they’re not.” And why our most cherished memories are clustered into a brief period during our youth. Readers discover how brief experiences can change lives, such as the experiment in which two strangers meet in a room, and forty-five minutes later, they leave as best friends. (What happens in that time?) Or the tale of the world’s youngest female billionaire, who credits her resilience to something her father asked the family at the dinner table. (What was that simple question?) Many of the defining moments in our lives are the result of accident or luck—but why would we leave our most meaningful, memorable moments to chance when we can create them? The Power of Moments shows us how to be the author of richer experiences.

How do moments produce monuments, and why are monuments erased from our cultural memory in only a moment? - Taking into account these cultural processes of creating, storing, remembering and forgetting that are omnipresent and have an immense influence on how we perceive artefacts and cultural events, the articles in this collection analyze the phenomenon of cultural production, transmission and reception from various angles, drawing on approaches from both literary and cultural studies. With its transdisciplinary approach, this book uniquely responds to an everyday cultural phenomenon that so far has not received such wide-ranging attention.

And that's when his troubles really begin... Witty, provocative, subversive and surprising, A Brief Eternity examines mankind's fondest wishes for love, redemption, happiness, immortality and, paradoxically, for death. Along the way it provides answers to the most important questions about the afterlife: what's the food like; who cleans the toilets; and how will the Islamic suicide bombers react when they realise they're all condemned to Hell, forever? A Brief Eternity is best read soon, while there's still time. Just in case...
Book Synopsis Old Lesbians and Their Brief Moments of Fame by : J. Ross
Download or read book Old Lesbians and Their Brief Moments of Fame written by J. Ross and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-23 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old Lesbians and their Brief Moments of Fame: An Anthology From many parts of the USA, and from various walks of life, we are all old lesbians who want to tell our stories. Some of us have been lesbians all of our lives, and others later came out later in life. Many of our contributors thanked us for inviting them to tell their stories. We asked each woman to introduce herself, and select one moment in her life that stands out as her Brief Moment of Fame (their own definition of fame). Why did we call ourselves Old lesbians and not older lesbians? We debated this for a while since some women in their 50s and 60s considered themselves either middle aged or older, but not old. They still fear the word old. Ageism is another word added to the list that identifies hurt, fear, and discrimination. Sexism still holds power in Americas patriarchal society. Sexual orientation is on the bottom of the list. The history of our past still reaches out to culturally bind us as women earning less than me, nurturing children alone, and tending the home. However, within this list, we are feminists, lesbians, and now finally old. We are the many who have found our way, recognized who we are, and will celebrate our lives. We took charge of our lives, and embrace Old as a virtue of earned respect as we continue this celebration. We believe our country, too, will learn to respect Old by taking pride in our experience, knowledge, and especially our equal humanity. Some of our stories touch on historical movements of the past 50 or 60 years in which lesbians have been involved: the anti-war movement, gay rights, AIDS care and awareness, lesbian voices, (gay authors, gay newspapers, and bookstores). Now we have civil unions, marriages, lesbians in sports, and lesbian musicians, etc, etc. There are obviously many more old lesbians out there with stories to tell. Maybe some of them will want to contribute to Volume 2. We hope you enjoy reading these colorful and varied stories as much as we did.
Book Synopsis A Brief Moment in the Sun by : Neil Kinghan
Download or read book A Brief Moment in the Sun written by Neil Kinghan and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2023-03-22 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the George C. Rogers Jr. Book Award A Brief Moment in the Sun is the first scholarly biography of Francis Lewis Cardozo, one of the most talented and influential African Americans to hold elected office in the South between Reconstruction and the civil rights era. Born to a formerly enslaved African American mother and white Jewish father in antebellum South Carolina, Cardozo led a life of extraordinary achievement as a pioneering educator, politician, and government official. However, today he is largely unknown in South Carolina and among students of nineteenth-century American history. Immediately after the Civil War, Cardozo succeeded in creating and leading a successful school for formerly enslaved children in the face of widespread racial hostility. Between 1868 and 1877, voters elected him secretary of state and state treasurer. In the Republican administrations that controlled the state during Reconstruction, Cardozo was a famously honest officeholder when many of his colleagues were notoriously corrupt. He played a major part in securing a viable educational system for Black and white children and land reform for thousands of landless families. Cardozo proved that Black men could govern at least as well as white. As a result, he became the target of white supremacist Democratic politicians after they reclaimed power through a campaign of violence and intimidation. They prosecuted, convicted, and imprisoned Cardozo on a fabricated fraud charge. Pardoned in 1879, Cardozo moved to Washington DC, where he led an even more successful school for African American children. Neil Kinghan’s Brief Moment in the Sun is the first complete historical analysis of Francis Cardozo and his contribution to Reconstruction and African American history. It draws on original research on Cardozo’s early life and education in Scotland and England and pulls together for the first time the extant sources on his experiences in South Carolina and Washington, DC. Kinghan reveals all that Cardozo achieved as a Black educator and political leader and explores what else he might have realized if white racism and violence had not ended his efforts in South Carolina. Above all, Kinghan shows that Francis Cardozo deserves a place of honor and distinction in the history of nineteenth-century America.
