It offers an informed and rich discussion in understanding the collaboration between profit and non-profit organisations involved in food recovery dynamics, and provides understanding as to how the two types of players create effective, innovative and sustainable processes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains the edited papers from the International Commission for Research into European Food History conference held in 1991 at Brunel University, West Germany. The conference was devoted to the development of European food policies, principally in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Several of the papers illustrate the significance of philanthropy in the initiation of food policies, others illustrate the voluntary initiatives for the feeding of poor schoolchildren in The Netherlands and England. Another paper demonstrates the ways in which scientists began to be incorporated into some sectors of the British food industry between 1870 and 1940, especially into some of the newer consumer industries where quality control was particularly important. Several papers are concerned with the introduction of new foods, illustrating how, in general, food habits are remarkably conservative and resistant to change; others illustrate the administrative difficulties of establishing rationing systems in the First World War.

Book excerpt: Published in 1997, this book traces the development of European Food Aid Policy from its inception in the 1960s through to the 1990s. This covers the change from a surplus disposal programme in the early days to the present policy. The European Food Aid Policy is one of the few areas of development policy that is European rather than national in character. John Cathie therefore also examines the links forged with non-governmental organizations at an international level, for food aid and humanitarian operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can a focus on “food projects” in Europe tell us about contemporary social processes and cultural debates? Valeria Siniscalchi and Krista Harper show how food becomes a marker of identity and resistance to social exclusion, and how food values become tools for transforming power dynamics at the local level and beyond. Through the comparison of food-centered movements across Europe, the book explains how these forms of mobilization express ideologies as well as economic and political objectives. The chapters use an ethnographic approach to focus on the transformation of values carried by individuals and groups in relation to food in Portugal, Greece, Latvia, Moldova, Denmark, the UK, Italy, and France. Contributors analyze food values, as expressed in daily life and livelihoods, through specific practices of production, exchange, and consumption. Topics covered include Prague's urban agricultural scene, the perception of poverty in Moldova, shepherds' protests in Sardinia, and organic food cooperatives in Catalonia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food safety is a top priority in Europe. The EU's demanding rules have been further toughened since 2000 to ensure that Europeans' food is extremely safe. The new approach is more integrated: feed and food are carefully tracked from the farm to the fork. EU authorities carefully evaluate risk and always seek the best possible scientific advice before banning or permitting any product, ingredient, additive or GMO. This applies to all feed and food, irrespective of whether it comes from inside or outside the EU. Safety does not mean uniformity. The EU promotes diversity based on quality. European law protects traditional foods and products from specific regions by ensuring consumers can distinguish them from copies. The European Union is increasingly encouraging its farmers to focus on quality - not just in food but also in the rural environment. The EU also respects the consumer's right to informed choice. It encourages public debate, it requires informative labelling and it publishes the scientific advice it receives, so that consumers can have confidence in the food they eat.

This brochure explains the role of the European Union (EU) in maintaining the highest standards of food safety and quality. The EU agricultural policy encourages farmers to produce a large choice of quality foodstuff, including organic production. European-wide legislation serves to keep food free of harmful substances and to keep consumers well informed through the labels on the food. The EU Food and Veterinary Office monitors whether safety rules are followed. Also, the EU activities related to new technology and to the global trade rules have an impact on our daily food.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American eating changed dramatically in the early twentieth century. As food production became more industrialized, nutritionists, home economists, and so-called racial scientists were all pointing Americans toward a newly scientific approach to diet. Food faddists were rewriting the most basic rules surrounding eating, while reformers were working to reshape the diets of immigrants and the poor. And by the time of World War I, the country's first international aid program was bringing moral advice about food conservation into kitchens around the country. In Modern Food, Moral Food, Helen Zoe Veit argues that the twentieth-century food revolution was fueled by a powerful conviction that Americans had a moral obligation to use self-discipline and reason, rather than taste and tradition, in choosing what to eat. Veit weaves together cultural history and the history of science to bring readers into the strange and complex world of the American Progressive Era. The era's emphasis on science and self-control left a profound mark on American eating, one that remains today in everything from the ubiquity of science-based dietary advice to the tenacious idealization of thinness.
