Download or read book Analysis of food demand and supply across the rural–urban continuum for selected countries in Africa written by Dolislager, M.J. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This background paper to The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2023 analyses a key element of agrifood systems transformation: the change of patterns in food supply and demand. Several studies have discussed this topic, but the current one takes an innovative perspective of analysis, considering these changes with a spatial perspective using the urban rural catchment areas (URCA) approach to analyse changes in food expenditure across the rural–urban continuum, using Living Standards Measurement Studies (LSMS) of 11 African countries. The analysis is preceded by a literature review of agrifood value chains transformation stages, drivers and current situation, focused in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and is followed by a macro review of food supply around the world and a “macro-meso” review of the supply of wheat and rice in two African countries. The conclusions shows that most food is purchased in all households across the rural–urban continuum, even in rural areas, breaking with the “myth” of rural subsistence farming in Africa. In addition, the results show a diffusion of the consumption of processed foods, including in a lesser extent highly processed foods, all across the rural–urban continuum, and not only in rural areas. From a food supply perspective, the low global availability of foods that are part of a healthy diet, as fruits, vegetables and legumes, nuts and seeds calls for increasing efforts for producing more nutritious foods in all countries of the world.
Book Synopsis Innovation in agri-food systems by : W.M.F. Jongen
Download or read book Innovation in agri-food systems written by W.M.F. Jongen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a fully rewritten and extended version of the successful first edition of a textbook which focuses on consumer-driven food product innovation using a systems-oriented approach. It integrates marketing and consumer sciences with technological aspects such as processing, logistics and information technology, and presents an integrated view of how new food product development is to be situated in a chain-oriented approach. Attention is also paid to the impact of changes in the environment of the agri-food system on food innovation, such as the changing consumer, the growing concern about food safety and new insights in human nutrition. Topics covered include changing markets, consumer perception of product quality, quality function deployment, the use of new and improved technology in food production, logistics and information technology, the role of regulation and legislation, quality management and control systems such as HACCP and TQM. The chapters of the first edition have been updated and extended. New chapters have been added, on consumer behaviour, corporate strategy, food safety and nutritional aspects of food innovation. Researchers and professionals in the food industry as well as students of food science, food technology and management will find this publication provides valuable information on the latest developments in the product innovation by agri-food systems.
Book Synopsis Comparison of Three Food Consumption Estimation Procedures by : Mervin J. Yetley
Download or read book Comparison of Three Food Consumption Estimation Procedures written by Mervin J. Yetley and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: Three food demand estimation procedures were compared to find which best measures the structure of food demand. These procedures were Semmingly Unrelated Regression, Block Additive, and Ordinary Least Squares. The focus was on food commodity substitution. The comparison of results was made on the basis of commodity demand and net change in calories consumed as estimated by each procedure. Each procedure projects a similar pattern of commodity demand and net caloric intake change. Overall, the Seemingly Unrelated Regression procudure provides the most reasonable and consistent results.
