Book Synopsis Cancer Therapy by : Natale D'Alessandro
Download or read book Cancer Therapy written by Natale D'Alessandro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provided here is a comprehensive examination of the basic and clinical condition of three innovative and promising approaches to cancer therapy, which may support or even substitute chemotherapy: differentiation, immunomodulation, and inhibition of angiogenesis. Differentiation shouldnormalize neoplastic cells and make them compatible with the host. Its feasibility with retinoids, interferons, chemotherapeutic and other agents is discussed. Modulation by biological agents, cytotoxic effector cells and drugs is considered in attempts to boost endogenous antitumour defenses and/or to render neoplastic cells more susceptible to the immune attack of the host. Finally, the important aspect of interfering with tumour blood vessel development and function is taken into account. Consideringthe importance that chemotherapy has in cancer treatment and in view of a more and more integrated strategy, the relationship between the aforementioned approaches and chemotherapeutic agents and chemoresistance is treated in detail.
Book Synopsis Sensory Neurons by : Sheryl A. Scott
Download or read book Sensory Neurons written by Sheryl A. Scott and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertebrate sensory neurons occupy a unique place in the nervous system, conveying information from the periphery to the CNS. While sensory physiologists have long recognized differences in response properties among cells in dorsal root and cranial ganglia, the full extent of heterogeneity among these neurons has only recently become apparent. Phenotypic diversity is the underlying theme of this unique work, which summarizes our current understanding of the individual characteristics and development of sensory neurons. The chapters are arranged in three cohesive sections. The first describes heterogeneity in the function, biochemical make-up, ion channels, membrane properties, and central projection patterns of dorsal root ganglion neurons. The second section discusses the development of sensory neurons, covering such topics as the origins of dorsal root and cranial ganglia, adhesive interactions involved in axon outgrowth, trophic dependence of sensory neurons, and the development of the physiological properties and central and peripheral connections of dorsal root ganglion neurons. The last section explains regeneration and plasticity of mature neurons, including sprouting of skin sensory axons, plasticity in central terminations, axotomy and regeneration, and the continuing role of neurotrophic factors in adult neurons

Book Synopsis Animal, Plant, and Microbial Toxins by : Akira Ohsaka
Download or read book Animal, Plant, and Microbial Toxins written by Akira Ohsaka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades, research on animal, plant, and microbial toxins has expanded rapidly, and new and exciting information has appeared to clarify both the clinical and therapeutic aspects of intoxication and, even more impor tant, to help us understand more exactly the structure and the mode of action of toxins on a molecular basis. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of toxin research, it is of vital impor tance that workers specializing in its different aspects should make a particular effort to exchange and keep up with new developments in this rapidly-expanding field. This has been one of the main purposes of the series of international meetings that have been held over the past ten years. The increasing interest in the results of toxin research can be explained partly by the growing general preoccupation with pollution and its toxic effects, which means that more anq more specialists in other fields are finding it necessary to keep in touch with current research into naturally occurring toxins. The papers in these volumes were presented at the Fourth International Symposium on Animal, Plant and Microbial Toxins, organized by the Inter national Society on Toxicology, held in Tokyo in September, 1974. The editors have decided to include both original reports and review articles, arranged according to disciplines. Editing has been kept to the minimum necessary for adequate comprehension of the materials.

Book Synopsis Pharmaceutical Applications of Cell and Tissue Culture to Drug Transport by : Glynn Wilson
Download or read book Pharmaceutical Applications of Cell and Tissue Culture to Drug Transport written by Glynn Wilson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there have been rapid advances in the growth and differentiation of mammalian cells in culture. This has led to increasing use of such in vitro systems in a wide variety of studies on fundamental aspects of cell structure and function, including normal growth and metabolism, mechanisms of differentiation and oncogenesis, mechanisms of protein and membrane synthesis and cell polarity. Recent advances in our ability to grow cells, including human cells, on permeable supports, to generate confluent cellular barriers with the morphological polarity corresponding to their in vivo counterparts has greatly facilitated such studies. In particular these new techniques have led to an increasing interest in the use of cell and tissue culture systems as a means for examining the transport of drugs across epithelial and endothelial barriers. An obvious question is whether these new in vitro methodologies will provide convenient systems that can substitute for and replace animal models. Various research groups both in academia and in the pharmaceutical industry have been investigating these types of methodologies in order to develop convenient well characterized systems that can be used to examine basic aspects of transcellular transport and to evaluate the permeability of drug molecules and delivery systems. Of particular note is use of confluent cell layers to study the transport of large molecules such as peptides and proteins produced through recombinant DNA technology.
Book Synopsis Breast Cancer: Cellular and Molecular Biology by : Marc E. Lippman
Download or read book Breast Cancer: Cellular and Molecular Biology written by Marc E. Lippman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do you begin to look for a recent, authoritative article on the diagnosis or management of particular malignancy? The few general oncology text books are generally out of date. Single papers in specialized journals are informative but seldom comprehensive; these are more often preliminary reports on a very limited number of patients. Certain general journals fre quently publish good in-depth reviews of cancer topics, and published sym posium lectures are often the best overviews available. Unfortunately, these reviews and supplements appear sporadically, and the reader can never be sure when a topic of special interest will be covered. Cancer Treatment and Research is a series of authoritative volumes which aim to meet this need. It is an attempt to establish a critical mass of oncology literature covering virtually all oncology topics, revised frequently to keep the coverage up to date, easily available on a single library shelf or by a single personal subscription. We have approached the problem in the following fashion. First, by divid ing the oncology literature into specific subdivisions such as lung cancer, genitourinary cancer, pediatric oncology, etc. Second, by asking eminent authorities in each of these areas to edit a volume on the specific topic on an annual or biannual basis. Each topic and tumor type is covered in a volume appearing frequently and predictably, discussing current diagnosis, staging, markers, all forms of treatment modalities, basic biology, and more.

Book Synopsis Chromosomal Proteins and Gene Expression by : Gerald R. Reeck
Download or read book Chromosomal Proteins and Gene Expression written by Gerald R. Reeck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book stems from an Advanced Study Institute on Chromo somal Proteins and Gene Expression that was held in Sitges, Spain, on September 17-26, 1984. It would be misleading to call this volume a conference proceedings, however. The ASI was not a conference, but a course with diverse activities, only one of which was a set of major presentations by the lecturers. Indeed, the concept of lecturer was intentionally obscured as we all learned from each other through shorter presentations by other participants and through seminars, poster sessions, and small group discussions. Furthermore, many participants found that exchanging ideas outside organized sessions was among the most rewarding aspects of the course. Some even claimed to have profitably probed the intricacies of nucleosome structure and transcriptional regulation while basking in the sun on the beachl Obviously, it is difficult to catch the flavor of such varied proceedings in a book. (I cannot confirm the incident on the beach, never having found time to set foot there. Such is the fate of the director of a meeting. ) The ASI was judged a success -- and enthusiastically so - by most participants. Not only did we deepen our understanding of our scientific field, we made new friends and learned about scientific and nonscientific aspects of life in other countries and about issues that transcend international boundaries in our complex world. We hope that this volume will be as successful as the course was.
