Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions to Analysis: A Collection of Papers Dedicated to Lipman Bers is a compendium of papers provided by Bers, friends, students, colleagues, and professors. These papers deal with Teichmuller spaces, Kleinian groups, theta functions, algebraic geometry. Other papers discuss quasiconformal mappings, function theory, differential equations, and differential topology. One paper discusses the results of the rigidity theorem of Mostow and its generalization by Marden in relation to geometric properties of Kleinian groups of the first kind. These results, obtained by planar methods, are presented in terms of the hyperbolic 3-space language, which is a natural pedestal in approaching the action of the Kleinian groups. Another paper reviews Riemann's vanishing theorem which solves the Jacobi inversion problem, by relating the vanishing properties of the theta function (particularly at half periods) to properties of certain linear series on the Riemann surface. One paper examines the problem of obtaining relations among the periods of the differentials of first kind on a compact Riemann surface. An application of a computer program involves supersonic transport. The program is based on the hodograph transformation and a method of complex characteristics to calculate profiles that are shock-less at a specified angle of attack, or at a specified subsonic free-stream Mach number. The collection can prove useful for engineers, statisticians, students, and professors in advance mathematics or courses related to aeronautics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To attempt to compile a relatively complete bibliography of the theory of functions of a real variable with the requisite bibliographical data, to enumer ate the names of the mathematicians who have studied this subject, exhibit their fundamental results, and also include the most essential biographical data about them, to conduct an inventory of the concepts and methods that have been and continue to be applied in the theory of functions of a real variable ... in short, to carry out anyone of these projects with appropriate completeness would require a separate book involving a corresponding amount of work. For that reason the word essays occurs in the title of the present work, allowing some freedom in the selection of material. In justification of this selection, it is reasonable to try to characterize to some degree the subject to whose history these essays are devoted. The truth of the matter is that this is a hopeless enterprise if one requires such a characterization to be exhaustively complete and concise. No living subject can be given a final definition without provoking some objections, usually serious ones. But if we make no such claims, a characterization is possible; and if the first essay of the present book appears unconvincing to anyone, the reason is the personal fault of the author, and not the objective necessity of the attempt.

It analyzes the development by focusing on both the interior and the external influences. Italian mathematics in that period was shaped by a colorful array of strong personalities who concentrated their efforts on a select number of fields and won international recognition and respect in an incredibly short time. Consequently, Italy was considered a third mathematical power after France and Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Input-to-State Stability presents the dominating stability paradigm in nonlinear control theory that revolutionized our view on stabilization of nonlinear systems, design of robust nonlinear observers, and stability of nonlinear interconnected control systems. The applications of input-to-state stability (ISS) are manifold and include mechatronics, aerospace engineering, and systems biology. Although the book concentrates on the ISS theory of finite-dimensional systems, it emphasizes the importance of a more general view of infinite-dimensional ISS theory. This permits the analysis of more general system classes and provides new perspectives on and a better understanding of the classical ISS theory for ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Features of the book include: • a comprehensive overview of the theoretical basis of ISS; • a description of the central applications of ISS in nonlinear control theory; • a detailed discussion of the role of small-gain methods in the stability of nonlinear networks; and • an in-depth comparison of ISS for finite- and infinite-dimensional systems. The book also provides a short overview of the ISS theory for other systems classes (partial differential equations, hybrid, impulsive, and time-delay systems) and surveys the available results for the important stability properties that are related to ISS. The reader should have a basic knowledge of analysis, Lebesgue integration theory, linear algebra, and the theory of ODEs but requires no prior knowledge of dynamical systems or stability theory. The author introduces all the necessary ideas within the book. Input-to-State Stability will interest researchers and graduate students studying nonlinear control from either a mathematical or engineering background. It is intended for active readers and contains numerous exercises of varying difficulty, which are integral to the text, complementing and widening the material developed in the monograph.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on some of the major developments in the history of contemporary (19th and 20th century) mathematics as seen in the broader context of the development of science and culture. Avoiding technicalities, it displays the breadth of contrasting images of mathematics favoured by different countries, schools and historical movements, showing how the conception and practice of mathematics changed over time depending on the cultural and national context. Thus it provides an original perspective for embracing the richness and variety inherent in the development of mathematics. Attention is paid to the interaction of mathematics with themes whose proper treatment have been neglected by the traditional historiography of the discipline, such as the relationship between mathematics, statistics and medicine.

This takes up Part One of the book. Part Two analyzes the crucial developments in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, above all the work of Cantor, but also Dedekind and the interaction between the two. Lastly, Part Three details the development of set theory up to 1950, taking account of foundational questions and the emergence of the modern axiomatization." (Bulletin of Symbolic Logic)
