Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two academics, one Jewish and one Muslim, come together to show how much their faiths have in common—particularly in America. This book provides a braided portrait of two American groups whose strong religious attachments and powerful commitments to ritual observance are not always easy to adapt to American culture. Orthodox Jews and observant Muslims share many similarities in their efforts to be at home in America while holding on to their practices and beliefs. As Samuel Heilman and Mucahit Bilici reveal, they follow similar paths in their American experience. Heilman and Bilici immerse readers in three layers of discussion for each religious group: historical evolution, sociological transformation, and a comparative understanding of certain parallel beliefs and practices, each of which is used as a window onto the lived reality of these communities. Written by two sociologists, one a religiously observant American Jew and the other an American Muslim, Following Similar Paths offers lively insider and outsider perspectives that deepen our understanding of American diversity and what it means to be religious in a modern society.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we present novel model predictive control (MPC) formulations based on a convex open-loop optimal control problem to tackle the problem setup of trajectory tracking and path following as well as the control of systems with unknown system dynamic. In particular, we consider the framework of relaxed barrier function based MPC (rbMPC). We extend the existing stability theory to the trajectory tracking and the path following problem. We establish important system theoretic properties like closed-loop stability and exact constraint satisfaction under suitable assumptions. Moreover, we evaluate the developed MPC algorithms in the area of automated driving in simulations as well as in a real-world driving scenario. Further, we consider the control of completely unknown systems based on online optimization. We divide the overall problem into the design of an estimation algorithm and a control algorithm. The control algorithm is a model-independent receding horizon control algorithm in which important system theoretic properties like convergence to the origin are guaranteed without the knowledge of the true system parameters. The estimation and control algorithm are combined together and convergence to the origin of the closed-loop system for fully unknown linear time-invariant discrete-time systems is shown.

Book excerpt: This book is meant to give someone in the process of making a life decision at any age—in early adulthood, at the point of middle-age change and later, when we find ourselves at the crossroads without a name—some ideas against which to pit their own minds, their own circumstances. Its purpose, as they wrestle with the process of trying to find and follow their own special call at this new stage of life, is to both provoke thinking and to clarify it. —Joan Chittister In our modern and mobile society, the range of answers to the questions “What am I supposed to do with my life?” and “How do I know when I’ve found my purpose?” can seem endless and overwhelming. Following the Path by Sister Joan brings the insights of her years of teaching and contemplation to bear on this issue, providing readers with a new way forward. Through her examination of spiritual calling and gifts, change and discernment, she leads readers home to the place where, finally, we know we fit, where we are the fullest of ourselves and a gift to the world, a timely and much needed message that many will be happy to hear.

A great read." —Edward Bruner, author of Culture on Tour: Ethnographies of Travel "This is an extraordinary, engaging, and provocative work by one of the distinctive leaders in what has become a lively intellectual field. It also speaks to much broader questions about culture, economy, social life, and experience than the touristic – this is powerful social theory in transit." —Don Brenneis, co-editor of Law and Empire in the Pacific “The Ethics of Sightseeing is vintage MacCannell. It draws together topics—some of which have already appeared as separate papers—in an analytical whole in the same way he did in his original 1976 book The Tourist. And like The Tourist, this book is full of brilliant insights drawn from personal experiences, anecdotes, and a wide knowledge of the humanistic and social science literature. It is eye-opening and pushes the boundaries of knowledge and disciplines. It will go well beyond academic and classroom audiences in providing a new twist to cultural studies interpretations of modern society.” —Nelson Graburn, co-editor of Multiculturalism in the New Japan

Book excerpt: The 21st century has started out with universities adhering to a school of thought that has evolved to the point of believing in the metamorphosis of people and society through the creation of powerful inventions. And society seems to expect that too. Universities around the world are experiencing an increasing pressure to produce revolutionary ideas that can be translated into publications, patents, business, and the like. As a way of welcoming the third mission for universities, elite winners of this tough game are gathering prestige, visibility, and all kind of human and financial assets. Training and research (the first and second missions) are no longer enough; universities are in a race for resources expressed in rankings that tend to model the whole higher education system. But, what about the small and middle size universities? They are watching the game and want to be part of it. This book is concerned with that group, especially private higher education that is looking for ways to become visible and attract more resources. Leadership at these institutions is becoming more entrepreneurial every day, and following in the steps of highly research productive schools. Changes like these do not come without resistance from, among others, faculty members who see these shifts as a threat to their traditional teaching mission. In short, this wave of producing inventions has put an incredible amount of stress on human resources and funding at smaller institutions. The book illustrates the perceptions that professors have about the production of knowledge and their organizational environment. This study seeks, through a mixed-method, to unveil organizational and personal characteristics of faculty members most related to research productivity at 12 small to medium sized not-for-profit, private, doctorate-granting universities in the United States of America. As an additional contribution, the author taps into alternative models of higher education, the implications for which should be considered in broader society. This is a scholarly work that is oriented to both policy makers and scholars of private universities that are evolving from a teaching oriented culture to a more research intense one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muslims need a passion for unity. All Muslims believe and follow the Quran and Prophet Mohammad and highly respect and admire Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib. Yet despite similar traditions, there is a lack of unity because of an inaccurate understanding of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talibs vision and mission among many Muslims. In Know and Follow the Straight Path: Finding Common Ground between Sunnis and Shias, author Tallal Alie Turfe, a champion of religious tolerance, explores the Quran and traditions to find the common ground and common principles between the Islamic schools of thought. He is a strong advocate of intrafaith dialogue that offers the chance for better understanding, collaboration, and partnership among all Muslims. This book is a road map for Muslims to trek the path of truth and certainty in the hope their efforts will lead to a genuine unity as they celebrate their differences as windows of opportunities. As they uproot ignorance with knowledge, they will learn to cooperate with each other. The pledge to unity must begin within themselves, within their families, within their communities, and with each other. Know and Follow the Straight Path: Finding Common Ground between Sunnis and Shias provides the whys and hows necessary to winning that unity.

Book excerpt: This book compares two countries with striking parallels in economic and political outcomes, yet with some distinct features in terms of institutional structures, relative size, and culture. Therefore, this book forms a fruitful platform for the study of the similarities and differences in the economic and societal development of Japan and Finland. Despite their geographic distance from one another and the aforementioned differences, both countries experienced rather similar economic and societal development patterns after the Second World War. The study of these societies both individually and through commonalities will provide a unique perspective on the emergence of modern economies and institutions. The book provides comprehensive coverage on issues such as welfare state formation and society, security and military spending, education system, industrial development, international trade, governmental economic policies, energy solutions, and bubbles and their collapse; thus, issues typical for these countries, as well as most modern states, studied from a longitudinal perspective. The book aims to answer a fundamental question in social science: Why do there seem to be common trends and developmental paths among countries differing in size, culture, and economic structure? This book will provide insights for those seeking to decipher how the developments in their own countries came about and where they may be headed to.

Book excerpt: Chris Sangster’s book is a practical, step-by-step guide to personal and professional development that covers the strategy, techniques and philosophy behind the process. Lifelong learning, the shift from trainer-centred delivery to learner-centred development and the opportunities provided by new technologies, place considerable onus on individuals to take responsibility for their own learning. This guide will help trainers and facilitators to enable learners to do just that. There are, at least, three different participants involved in any meaningful and sustainable process of personal development at work - the learner, his or her line manager and mentor(s), and the training (or development support) function. Chris Sangster provides a route map for each of these three roles. He offers a simple, compelling triangular model to illustrate the interaction of each and places particular emphasis on ’learning outcomes’ - as opposed to inputs, focusing attention and objective measurement on learning that manifests itself through application, achievement and changes in behaviour. Whether you are looking for a complete and holistic process for developing your people or a highly readable guide to unravelling the myths of development - such as the confusion between personal and professional development - this book has it all.

I'm excited to introduce you to the fascinating world of financial psychology. In this series, we'll explore how our emotions, beliefs, and behaviors influence our financial decisions. We'll see how this understanding can transform our relationship with money and help us achieve our goals. Financial psychology studies the relationship between the human mind and money. It explores how psychological factors such as emotions, perceptions, and beliefs influence our financial decisions. It combines concepts from psychology and economics to understand financial behavior. Financial psychology isn't just about numbers and graphs. It helps us understand why we sometimes make financial decisions that don't make rational sense. By understanding the psychological mechanisms behind our decisions, we can make more informed decisions that align with our goals. Emotions such as fear, greed, and anxiety significantly influence our financial decisions. Fear of losing money can lead to conservative decisions, while greed can lead to excessive risk-taking. Hope for a better future can motivate us to save, but it can also lead us to invest in high-risk assets. Emotions are like an internal GPS that guides us in our financial decisions. However, they can lead us down a wrong path if not managed properly. By identifying and understanding our emotions, we can make more rational decisions that are aligned with our long-term goals. Cognitive biases are mental shortcuts we use to make decisions faster, but they can lead us to make mistakes. Examples of biases include loss aversion, confirmation bias, and herd behavior. How to identify and overcome these biases to make sounder financial decisions. Our brains are incredible machines, but they are also prone to making mistakes. Cognitive biases are like optical illusions that distort our perception of reality. By being aware of these biases, we can take steps to counteract their effects and make more rational decisions. Our financial habits are shaped by our experiences and beliefs. The importance of developing healthy financial habits, such as saving, investing, and planning for the future. How to create new habits and break old financial habits. Our financial habits are like paths we follow on autopilot. If we want to change our financial results, we need to change our paths. By developing new positive financial habits, we can transform our financial lives. Financial psychology offers us a new perspective on money. Instead of seeing money as an end in itself, we can see it as a means to achieve our goals and live a more fulfilling life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jana S. Rošker offers the first comprehensive overview and exegesis of the work of Li Zehou, who is one of the most significant and influential Chinese philosophers of our time. Rošker shows us how Li's complex system of thought seeks to revive various Chinese traditions, and at the same time attempts to harmonize or reconcile this cultural heritage with the demands of the dominant economic, political, and axiological structures of our globalized world. Variously characterized as "neo-traditional," "neo-Kantian," "post-Marxist," "Marxist-Confucian," "pragmatist," "instrumentalist," "romantic," and more, Li's work was central to the period known as the Chinese Enlightenment in the 1980s and has helped modify and transform antiquated patterns of Chinese intellectual discourse. He is one of the rare Chinese thinkers whose work has not only had a deep and lasting impact on Chinese intellectuals, but has acquired a broad readership outside of China as well. Seen from a broader intercultural perspective, Li's unique and imaginative approach to a wide range of basic theoretical problems has created new styles of intellectual investigation, while reminding us of our belonging to a common humanity, regardless of differences in our individual cultures, languages, preferences, and traditions.

Book excerpt: People all over the world are becoming more enlightened as outworn beliefs are being discarded, replaced with new discoveries and open minds. This shift in awareness is naturally calling forth more and more Lightworkers. As we increase in numbers, so, too, will the power of our collective consciousness. It will raise positive vibrations across the world and lift everything and everyone up. We, Lightworkers, will lead others into a higher level of knowing and living. Can you imagine what that means for all of us as humans, as souls, and for our planet? Wow! So, what Is A Lightworker? A Lightworker is someone who feels a strong need to help people, animals, or nature. These spiritual souls are very much like angels on Earth, doing whatever they can, big or small, to serve in some way. Nearly all Lightworkers have faced more than their share of heartache, abuse, illness, and injury. They're very aware that they have a shadow side, even if they haven't worked on making peace with this part of themselves. This wounded, darker side is often what leads them to their true calling in life, even if they aren't exactly sure how or where to help. Whether their role in life is modest or huge, every Lightworker is a bridge between this world and the hereafter. And whether they lead a throng of people or one at a time, the goal is to bring others to a higher state of living and loving. So what kind of Lightworker are you? Are you a newly awakened Lightworker who wants to be of service somehow? Or are you a long-time Lightworker who came into this life knowing who you are and what you need to do? Are you ready and eager to jump into your role? Have you been a helper and healer for some time? Or have you hidden this very important part of yourself from the world out of fear or uncertainty? Wherever you're at on your journey, I'm so glad that you've made the decision to explore and embrace your true calling in life. The world needs you!

Book excerpt: With Wayne Bennett From the silky wax qualities of the surfaces of some quartz menhirs to the wood-grain textures of others, to the golden honeycombed limestones of Malta, to the icy frozen waves of the Cambrian sandstone of south-east Sweden, this book investigates the sensuous material qualities of stone. Tactile sensations, sonorous qualities, colour, and visual impressions are all shown to play a vital part in our understanding of the power and significance of prehistoric monuments in relation to their landscapes. In The Materiality of Stone, Christopher Tilley presents a radically new way of analyzing the significance of both 'cultural' and 'natural' stone in prehistoric European landscapes. Tilley's groundbreaking approach is to interpret human experience in a multidimensional and sensuous human way, rather than through an abstract analytical gaze. The studies range widely from the menhirs of prehistoric Brittany to Maltese Neolithic temples to Bronze Age rock carvings and cairns in southern Sweden. Tilley leaves no stone unturned as he also considers how the internal spaces and landscape settings are interpreted in relation to artifacts, substances, and related places that were deeply meaningful to the people who inhabited them and remain no less evocative today. In its innovative approach to understanding human experience through the tangible rocks and stone of our past, The Materiality of Stone is both a major theoretical and substantive contribution to the field of material culture studies and the study of European prehistory.
