Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Followers of the Trail Mexico, you may catch glimpses now and again of the half oh literated road marks of the 'old Santa Fe Trail. For nearly three hundred years this path over the terrible and alluring wilderness has been trod by white men, but no one can guess for how many centuries before the Spanish explorers first discovered it, how many generations of Red Men, Zuni, Apache, and Moki, Pueblos, cliff-dwellers and cave-dwellers, had passed that way before them. But from the first solitary wanderer who dared the unspeakable dangers of the en chanted desert, to the last cow-puncher who loped carelessly through the sage-bush and over the sand dunes that half hid the tracks of yesterday, no one I think who ever travelled that trail has been an ordinary, commonplace person, such as one would expect to meet jogging along most roads that you and I are familiar with. "The Dixie Highway, which goes from Chicago to sunny Florida," responded Virginia. "The Mohawk Trail, which takes you through the most beautiful sections of New England," called out Helen. "The Adirondack Trail, that gives you a trip through the wonderful mountains," said Henry. Father was referee and the children were playing a favorite twilight game. Jack and Virginia were trying to down Helen and Henry, and they made it lively for father. The object was to name the largest number of important highways - the Marked Trails over which thousands of automobiles spin along on their errands of business or pleasure, and to give an idea of the sections of country through which they are built. Excitement grew as the game progressed, and a score of answers were given correctly, but after Virginia and Jack had challenged with "Yellowstone Trail" and "Great White Way," Helen and Henry had to give up, and Virginia's side was declared victor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Followers of the Marked Trail: Teacher's Manual The value of a text book can never be adequately judged except in connection with the teacher who is to present it; for truth, no matter how important, never comes to the young child as mere truth, but always bearing the quality of the teacher's interpretation of it. One writer says that, "It is as if the teacher's mind and spirit were a stained glass through which the sunlight must fall. All that passes through the medium of a living personality takes its tone and quality from this contact. The pupils may or may not grasp the lessons from their books, but the teachers are living epistles known and read by them all." The Teacher's Part The teacher of this text will have three great functions. One is that of instruction. He will act as an intermediary between the child and the materials of the text, aiding the child's understanding, stimulating his imagination, cultivating his interest, making sure of the applications of the teaching to the child's thought and life. He will also act as an interpreter of the best of thought, of spirit, of religious incentive, which the volume contains. Indeed, more than this, the teacher will be, at least should be, the pupil's ideal Christian, his highest representative of religion. The teacher will also act as a spur and incentive to the pupil, stimulating him to effort, thought, attention, preparation of lessons and their recitation. Book excerpt: Followers of the Trail by Zoe Meyer In the depths of the green wilderness, where dark spruce and hemlock guard the secrets of the trail, are still to be found wild creatures who know little of man and who regard him with more of curiosity than of fear. Woodland ponds, whose placid waters have never reflected the dark lines of a canoe, lie like jewels in their setting of green hills; ponds where soft-eyed deer come down to drink at twilight, and where the weird laughter of the loon floats through the morning mists. Toward the south, however, man is fast penetrating the secrets of the forest, blazing dim trails and leaving fear and destruction in the wake of his guns and traps. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Long Trail There is a universal saying to the effect that it is when men are off in the wilds that they show themselves as they really are. As in the case with the majority of proverbs there is much truth in it, for without the minor comforts of life to smooth things down, and with even the elemental necessities more or less problematical, the inner man has an unusual opportunity of showing himself - and he is not always attractive. A man may be a pleasant companion when you always meet him clad in dry clothes, and certain of substantial meals at regulated intervals, but the same cheery individual may seem a very different person when you are both on half rations, eaten cold, and have been drenched for three days - sleeping from utter exhaustion, cramped and wet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trail, Vol. 12: September, 1919 What the letter shows is simply this: that Captain Mellon has an opinion on the subject and has ex pressed it. I believe that it a well established rule in court proceedings that before the mere opinion of a witness can be received as evidence, he must qualify as an expert in the case. Dawson, it would seem, attempts to do this for his witness. On page 6, he says: and there is probably no man liv ing who knows the Colorado as he knows it, and following the letter asks this \question: Aside from the testimony of some one who had come through with White, what could be more convincing than this letter from Captain Mellon? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Crow Wing Trail 5. The military stage and early Red River steamer route, which connected St. Paul with Fort Garry in 1860. 6. The Dawson route, which cut off the laborious navigation of the Kaministiquia River by a road to Lake Shebandawan, using thence the old water route of the North West Co., with dams on several streams, better landings and improved portages to the Lake of the Woods and the North West Angle, from which a road had been cut to St. Anne and St. Boniface, thus saving the broken navigation of the Winnipeg River, the crossing of the head of Lake Winnipeg, and the ascent of the Red River. 7. The old Crow Wing Trail, opened in 1844 by a few adventurous spirits under direction of William Hallett, who having been attacked by the Sioux on their way to St. Paul by Lac Travers and St. Peter, sought safety in returning by this route, many miles of which had to be cut through the woods. Of these seven routes of travel I have, Mr. President, ladies and gentlemen, chosen the last-mentioned because, unlike most of the others, it may not be traversed to-day. The ploughshare of the Minnesota settler has obliterated its once deeply marked triple track, and even where, like the old buffalo paths of Southwestern Manitoba, these may in some places be distinguished, the fence of the old and the new settler bars the way.
