Book Synopsis Broadcasting Birth Control by : Manon Parry
Download or read book Broadcasting Birth Control written by Manon Parry and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-23 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, the history of the birth control movement has been told through the accounts of the leaders, organizations, and legislation that shaped the campaign. Recently, historians have begun examining the cultural work of printed media, including newspapers, magazines, and even novels in fostering support for the cause. Broadcasting Birth Control builds on this new scholarship to explore the films and radio and television broadcasts developed by twentieth-century birth control advocates to promote family planning at home in the United States, and in the expanding international arena of population control. Mass media, Manon Parry contends, was critical to the birth control movement’s attempts to build support and later to publicize the idea of fertility control and the availability of contraceptive services in the United States and around the world. Though these public efforts in advertising and education were undertaken initially by leading advocates, including Margaret Sanger, increasingly a growing class of public communications experts took on the role, mimicking the efforts of commercial advertisers to promote health and contraception in short plays, cartoons, films, and soap operas. In this way, they made a private subject—fertility control—appropriate for public discussion. Parry examines these trends to shed light on the contested nature of the motivations of birth control advocates. Acknowledging that supporters of contraception were not always motivated by the best interests of individual women, Parry concludes that family planning advocates were nonetheless convinced of women’s desire for contraception and highly aware of the ethical issues involved in the use of the media to inform and persuade.

Download or read book Revitalizing Nigerian Education in Digital Age written by Soji Oni and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revitalizing Nigerian Education in Digital Age: What most of the papers in this book have in common is the concern for the revitalization of Nigerian education in the digital age through ICT and other modern methods of making education functional and effective in the new modernity. While some of the chapters deal with conceptual issues, others consider the various role of education in this digital age and how Nigeria can be relevant. Most of the chapters present well-researched, detailed, and informative papers on how to reposition Nigerian education in the digital age. Specifically, the role of education in bringing Nigerias new world about are discussed in simple language and then taken up in different forms all through the book. Since Nigeria has to act fast and decisively to be on the same development and education wavelength as the other members of todays global family, serious actions are being suggested in this book. Revitalizing Nigerian Education in Digital Age simply means taking the above desiderata seriously. Nigeria has a daunting task here in view of the heavy education burden. This is the message that this book puts across.

Book Synopsis The Popular Performing Arts, Non-formal Education, and Social Change in the Third World by : Ross Kidd
Download or read book The Popular Performing Arts, Non-formal Education, and Social Change in the Third World written by Ross Kidd and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended as a tool for non-formal education practitioners and researchers in identifying a range of relatively fugitive material, this bibliography includes 1,779 references to descriptive and analytical materials concerning the use of the performing arts as a medium for education and social change in the Third World. An introductory essay offers a state-of-the-art review of such major concepts as folk media and popular theater, the various strands of educational and developmental activity, and their varying methodologies, contents, and organizational contexts. Uses of the performing arts within mass national education programs, small-scale community education/development projects, and popular movements are contrasted and compared. It is concluded that the field is much broader than the folk media programs often cited in development literature. Citations are alphabetically arranged by main entry and are accessible via extensive geographical and topical indexes. (Author/LMM)
