Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forecasting is an important part of the desire to influence our destiny in an uncertain future. While there are many faces to the forecasting Eve, perhaps the most important in the present age involves prediction about economic matters relating to the larger community. Mervin Daub argues that careful consideration of aggregate economic forecasting, in this case with particular reference to Canada, enables us to better understand the role which prediction plays in human affairs.

Book excerpt: This book is a sequel to our first report of ASIAN LINK PROJECT in 1985: Econometric Models of Asian LINK, Springer-Verlag, Tokyo - Berlin - New York. Now the scope is expanded to Asian-Pacific Countries in coverage, so that this monograph presents the econometric models of Japan, the United States, Canada, China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singa pore, Indonesia, Australia and the European Community. We are particularly happy to have included the excellent models of Australia and Canada whose economies are essential parts of the Asian-Pacific Economic Community. Most of those models were presented at the Workshop of Asian Link Project held in Bandung, Indonesia at the time of the Second Convention of the East Asian Eco nomic Association, 1990. Those models have been up-dated since then, and several other important models were added. Unlike our previous book, we have not tried here to link these national models as a regional or global model in any way, ex cept for the model by S. Kinoshita which offers a regional linkage for Pacific-basin economies by linking the US, Japan, Canada, the European Community coun tries as a group, Asian NIEs (Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan), ASEAN (Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore) and East Asian economies. As we argued in our previous publication, we tried to publish these econometric models again with the statistical data as much as we could, so as to enable the reader examine the estimation and performance of the models by himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in the job mix of Ontario's economy and their implications for skills development. It reviews a number of trends in Ontario's economy that have affected demand in the labour market during the past 28 years. It also provides an analysis of how the mix of jobs in Ontario has evolved over time in response to these changes in the economy. It uses a projection to the year 2000 of trends in the demand for labour across occupations to offer a number of insights into future shifts in the occupational mix and their implications for the educational and training requirements of the work force. In addition, it presents a projection of labour supply growth and changes in the demographic characteristics of the work force during the decade ahead, along with a review of sources of new labour force entrants with advanced levels of education and training. It concludes with a discussion of labour market issues that will become much more important in the 1990s.

Book excerpt: An important feature of the 1997 changes to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) is a significant increase over the next decade of the premiums to be paid by employers and employees. This study uses the FOCUS model of the Canadian economy to examine the macro-economic impacts of these increases and to investigate some alternatives. These alternatives include some form of privatization of the CPP and the substitution of income taxes for premium increases. A final simulation examines the extent to which existing and forecasted reductions in employment insurance premiums could offset the negative impacts of CPP premium increases.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large scale investment projects, such as the energy developments proposed for Atlantic Canada, the Arctic and Western Canada in the early 1980's, stimulated keen interest in the estimation of their social and economic impacts. The use of large-scale economic models was seen as a possible method of assessing these impacts. This report examines the utility of large-scale economic models for examining the socio-economic impact of private and public sector projects within a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) framework. It begins by examining the nature of the SIA in Canada to identify the types of questions and the variables that are normally of interest, and for which large-scale models should be able to assist in developing answers. A set of study models, chosen for their apparent usefulness for SIA work and public availability, are described in summary fashion to outline their main conceptual features. Each of the study models is examined in terms of a set of technical characteristics to provide an overview of its capability to deal with SIA questions and issues. The strengths and limitations of multipliers and some issues of interpretation for SIA work are discussed. The features of the different classes of models, and the properties of specific models, especially suited to analyze and assess typical SIA economic impact concerns are identified.
