Download or read book The Dove Flyer written by Eli Amir and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dove Flyer tells the story of the last years of the Jewish community in Baghdad, before their expulsion in 1950 and settlement in Israel. The young narrator, Kabi, watches as the members of his extended family each develop different dreams and a different sets of fears throughout these tumultuous, transitional times: his mother wants to move out of the new Jewish quarter and back to their old Muslim neighborhood where she felt safer; his father wants to emigrate to the promised land, the new State of Israel, where he will farm and grow rice; his uncle Hizkel, a Zionist, is arrested and taken off to prison to await trial and a possible death sentence; his headmaster, Salim, believes in the equality of Arabs and Jews; and his uncle Edouard just wants to hang out on the rooftop with his doves. Meanwhile, as World War II draws closer and Israeli statehood seems more assured, a noose begins to tighten around Jewish Iraqis. Houses are appropriated, Jews are beaten in the streets and hung in public, and young Kabi watches as the storied legacy of the Jewish community in Baghdad is dismantled piecemeal and finally decimated. As for the land of milk and honey, there is neither milk, nor honey. It is a desert, a place as barren and coarse as the community Kabi and his family left behind was vibrant, bountiful, and dreamy.

Book excerpt: In this shimmering work of fiction, Nicholas Christopher follows the remarkable life of Franklin Flyer–a restless young inventor named after the train on which he was born–through the tumultuous years of the Great Depression, into the Second World War. Raised by his suffragette aunt, at various times a vagabond and tycoon, Franklin travels across the U.S.A and around the globe, seeking adventure and enlightenment, charting his fate by pursuing the unexpected. He encounters a glittering cast of characters: among them Rita Hayworth, Josephine Baker, OSS founder “Wild Bill” Donovan, and a host of political zealots, opportunists, and dreamers thrown together in a world on the brink of collapse. With each new invention–devices that help to revolutionize everything from early television to the technology with which the Allies respond to the Axis powers–Franklin makes his mark. Gaining fame and fortune, he also suffers terrible heartbreak, and through numerous transformations discovers that a man’s own life is truly his most difficult, and rewarding, invention. A brisk, vivid blend of history and imagination, Franklin Flyer brings to life an American hero as unforgettable as his times.

Download or read book No Sleep written by DJ Stretch Armstrong and published by powerHouse Books. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Sleepis a visual history of the halcyon days of New York City club life as told through flyer art. Spanning the late 80s through the late 90s, when nightlife buzz travelled via flyers and word of mouth,No Sleepfeatures a collection of artwork from the personal archives of NYC DJs, promoters, club kids, nightlife impresarios, and the artists themselves. Club flyers, by design, were ephemeral objects distributed on street corners, outside of nightclubs and concert halls, in barbershops and retail shops, and were not intended to be preserved for posterity. Through the 90s, they became both increasingly prevalent and more sophisticated as printing technology evolved. Overnight, however, with the advent of the internet, theflyer essentially disappeared, despite it being common at one time for promoters to print thousands of flyers for any given event. Recently, these flyers have become sought-after collector's items.

Book excerpt: Discover a thrilling moment in history when pioneering aviator Ruth Law attempted to do what no other aviator had done before: fly nonstop from Chicago to New York. On November 19, 1916, at 8:25 a.m., Ruth Law took off on a flight from Chicago to New York City that aviation experts thought was doomed. Sitting at the controls of her small bi-plane, exposed to the elements, Law battled fierce winds and numbing cold. When her engine ran out of fuel, she glided for two miles and landed at Hornell, New York. Even though she fell short of her goal, she had broken the existing cross-country distance record. And with her plane refueled, she got back in the air and headed for New York City where crowds waited to greet her. This story is perfect to share during Women's History Month or anytime during the year!

The Nervous Flyer's Handbook will help you: - Understand that your feelings about flight are normal - Put your nervousness or fear into perspective - Think about flight in new ways - Prepare for a flight in order to minimize any additional stressors - Understand the basics and get through each phase of flight - Plan effective, distracting activities and coping techniques - Manage special issues that might come up Don't let your nervousness about flight take priority over visiting loved ones, taking that vacation, or an important business trip. The Nervous Flyer's Handbook is here to encourage and coach you along - for all of your future flights Kate Fellows has been a domestic and international "reluctant frequent flyer" for over 20 years, with well over five hundred flights worth of experience. For many of those years, she struggled with an intense fear of flying, but was determined to not let that stop her from visiting family and taking business trips. Finding most fear-of-flying resources from pilots and psychologists either too technical, unrealistic or generic, Kate started writing down her own perspectives, coping techniques and other ideas about the flight experience. Her pile of notes grew with each flight, and she found that re-reading these before and during each flight greatly reduced her fear of flying. Today Kate flies confidently and with ease, and those notes have evolved into this book, which she hopes can benefit other passengers in the same way. Kate lives with her family in Washington state.
