Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fly-Fishing and Worm-Fishing for Salmon, Trout and Grayling IT will be seen from the following pages, that in regard to the theory and practice of Artificial fly making and fishing the Author has arrived at conclusions very different to those usually accepted by anglers and angling writers but fishermen who, in spite of preconceived views and the vener able sanction of the fathers of the gentle craft, have the courage and patience to test for themselves the results of these conclusions fairly and thoroughly, and to adopt them if they are satisfied of their soundness, will find their reward in the increased weight of their baskets, and the diminution of trouble and expense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rod and River, or Fly-Fishing for Salmon, Trout and Grayling As long as there are rivers, and fish in them, so long there will be fishermen. The brotherhood of anglers is large, and the methods they employ to catch fish many and various. It is my intention to treat of fishing for salmon, trout, and grayling only in the following pages, restricting myself to the consideration of these three varieties Of the Salmonidae, their capture by means of the artificial fly, and the natural flies which form food for trout and grayling. Scores of books have from time to time been written on matters piscatorial, and it may be said, Still they come.' I have the audacity to add yet another volume to the long list of such works already existing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fly-Fishing and Fly-Making for Trout, Bass, Salmon, Etc The formation of the eye of the fish does not materi ally difier, one species from another, among the angler's fishes. The cornea is somewhat flat in sectional outline, and the shape, or, so to speak, the ground plan, is virtu ally similar in save the European graylin g (s. Thymallus). The pupil of the eye of this fish is oval instead of ciren lar - the oval of the plover's egg rather than that of the hen, being sharper than a true oval at one end. The apex of this sharp end is pointed toward the upper part of the head, tailward, giving the fish a somewhat sinister appearance. What purpose this particular configuration serves I do not know, but one thing is certain The vis ual ability of the grayling is equal, if not superior, to that of the trout, as is proved by its rising, often from a great depth, to the fly. I notice, also, that the normal waiting position of this fish is inclined toward the water's surface instead of being horizontal, as is usually the case with trout. This being so, the greater mass of the rays of direct sunlight would fall on the forward part of the eye, and I offer it as a conjecture, based on the law of devel Opment, that this, continued through generations, has evolved the peculiar shape. The graylin g of this country, though apparently similar in every other respect, does not exhibit the peculiarity referred to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dry-Fly Fishing for Trout and Grayling: With Some Advice to a Beginner in the Art The local fame of this day's sport clung to my) grandfather for many years, and lived in his memory for life, giving him a high Opinion of his own good fortune and skill. He chiefly affected gorge-bait fishing (not then, as now, wisely and humanely forbidden in the Thames) in lakes and preserved waters, but on the Thames he was also noted as a good all-round fisherman. So also was his son, my father angling was his favourite amusement on the Thames, and elsewhere, for he often went farther afield for his sport, and I was always his. Companion. It is no wonder, therefore, that at an early age I became initiated into some of the small mysteries and devices of the gentle art (a misnomer, surely, for some of its practices are very ungentle and, until the refining spirit of true sport with the angle corrects them, are decidedly cruel). At nine years old I was already a good gudgeon and perch fisher indeed, when I was not quite seven I wandered from home for three miles to the river Lea to catch minnows, fishing with a red worm on a proper hook and line - contrary to the usual puerile form which begins with cotton and a bent pin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Fly Fishing for Salmon, Trout, and Grayling: With Notes on Haunts, Habits and History They be mighty partikler now-a-days, bean't they, sir? not like when I was a boy;" was the remark of the old keeper (man and boy on the river for forty years) who had been watching my vain efforts to inveigle a big trout greedily sucking in the natural fly and apparently totally regardless of the beautiful and perfect imitation I was persistently presenting to him, the only notice of which he deigned to take was an occasional turn of his head, just to satisfy himself that he was being imposed upon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Practical Angler: A Complete Guide to Fly-Fishing, Bottom-Fishing, Trolling I have arrived at conclusions not only differing widely from hitherto received canons, but which, if accepted, will go far to revolutionize, in the direction of simplifying, the whole system both of making and using artificial flies. The question of tackle, also, has for many years occupied much of my attention; and the details of this subject - especially as regards hooks - are entered into with a minuteness which may perhaps seem to re quire apology. The apology is, that the whole art of angling consists really of an aggregation of minutiae, and that upon the difference between, say, a hook of one pattern and a hook of another, often depends, in effect, the difference between a good and a bad day's sport. The present opportunity is taken of submitting to the judgment of anglers a new pattern of hook, con structed on mechanical principles, and the result of some thought and experiment.
