The advances in technology call for the use of more sophisticated machining methods for the production of high-end components. In turn, more complex, more suitable, and reliable modeling methods are required. This book pertains to machining and modeling, but focuses on the special aspects of both. Many researchers in academia and industry, who are looking for ways to refine their work, make it more detailed, increase their accuracy and reliability, or implement new features, will gain access to knowledge in this book that is very scare to find elsewhere.

Book excerpt: This book presents an in-depth study and elucidation on the mechanisms of the micro-cutting process, with particular emphasis and a novel viewpoint on materials characterization and its influences on ultra-precision machining. Ultra-precision single point diamond turning is a key technology in the manufacture of mechanical, optical and opto-electronics components with a surface roughness of a few nanometers and form accuracy in the sub-micrometric range. In the context of subtractive manufacturing, ultra-precision diamond turning is based on the pillars of materials science, machine tools, modeling and simulation technologies, etc., making the study of such machining processes intrinsically interdisciplinary. However, in contrast to the substantial advances that have been achieved in machine design, laser metrology and control systems, relatively little research has been conducted on the material behavior and its effects on surface finish, such as the material anisotropy of crystalline materials. The feature of the significantly reduced depth of cut on the order of a few micrometers or less, which is much smaller than the average grain size of work-piece materials, unavoidably means that conventional metal cutting theories can only be of limited value in the investigation of the mechanisms at work in micro-cutting processes in ultra-precision diamond turning.

For each technology, both basic theory and practical applications are introduced. The book consists of two parts. In the first part, the basic principles of manufacturing technology for aspheric surfaces and key theory for deterministic subaperture polishing of aspheric surfaces are discussed. Then key techniques for high precision figuring such as CCOS with small polishing pad, IBF and MRF, are introduced, including the basic principles, theories and applications, mathematical modeling methods, machine design and process parameter selection. It also includes engineering practices and experimental results, based on the three kinds of polishing tools (CCOS, IBF and MRF) developed by the author’s research team. In the second part, basic principles of measurement and some typical examples for large and middle-scale aspheric surfaces are discussed. Then, according to the demands of low cost, high accuracy and in-situ measurement methods in the manufacturing process, three kinds of technologies are introduced, such as the Cartesian and swing-arm polar coordinate profilometer, the sub-aperture stitching interferometer and the phase retrieval method based on diffraction principle. Some key techniques are also discussed, including the basic principles, mathematical modeling methods, machine design and process parameter selection, as well as engineering practices and experimental results. Finally, the team’s research results about subsurface quality measurement and guarantee methods are also described. This book can be used as a reference for scientists and technologists working in optical manufacturing, ultra-precision machining, precision instruments and measurement, and other precision engineering fields. A complete all-in-one reference to aspheric fabrication and testing for optical applications Presents the latest research findings from the author’s internationally recognized leading team who are at the cutting edge of the technology Brings together surface processing and measurement in one complete volume, discussing problems and solutions Guides the reader from an introductory overview through to more advanced and sophisticated techniques of metrology and manufacturing, suitable for the student and the industry professional

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanotechnology, seen as the next leap forward in the industrial revolution, requires that manufacturers develop processes that revolutionize the way small products are made. Microfabrication and Nanomanufacturing focuses on the technology of fabrication and manufacturing of engineering materials at these levels. The book provides an overview of techniques used in the semiconductor industry. It also discusses scaling and manufacturing processes operating at the nanoscale for non-semiconductor applications; the construction of nanoscale components using established lithographic techniques; bulk and surface micromachining techniques used for etching, machining, and molding procedures; and manufacturing techniques such as injection molding and hot embossing. This authoritative compilation describes non-traditional micro and nanoscale processing that uses a newly developed technique called pulsed water jet machining as well as the efficient removal of materials using optical energy. Additional chapters focus on the development of nanoscale processes for producing products other than semiconductors; the use of abrasive particles embedded in porous tools; and the deposition and application of nanocrystalline diamond. Economic factors are also presented and concern the promotion and commercialization of micro and nanoscale products and how demand will eventually drive the market.
