Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of their adjacency in the periodic table, halogens and nonmetals have very different properties. Halogens are among the most chemically reactive elements in the periodic table, exhibiting a diverse chemistry in terms of the large numbers of compounds they can form. On the other hand, noble gases are the least chemically reactive elements. In fact, before the 1960s, chemists referred to these elements as inert gases, because it was believed that they exhibited no chemistry whatsoever. Providing the basics of these elements, including their role in history and some of the important scientists involved in their discovery, this newly updated, full-color resource features up-to-date scientific understanding in a clear and accessible format. Halogens and Noble Gases, Second Edition examines the ways humans use halogens and noble gases and the resulting benefits and challenges to society, health, and the environment. Fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, helium, and krypton are covered in this eBook, along with the fundamentals of chemistry and physics as well as possible future developments in halogen and noble gas science and its applications.

Book excerpt: Halogen Chemistry, Volume 3 focuses on advancement in the study of halogens. Composed of contributions of authors, the book focuses on discussions on halides that contain multicentred metal-metal bonds. The discussions are initialized with an introduction; identification of factors that influence metal-metal bond formation; and compounds that contain multi-centred metal-metal bonds. The text also looks at the nature of metal-halogen bonds and the metal-halogen vibrational frequencies. Numerical representations and tabulations are presented as well. The book also looks at the halides of niobium and tantalum. Concerns include fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine compounds. The compilation further considers pentahalides of transition metals and halide chemistry of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten. The book closes with discussions on halogen chemistry of actinides and halogeno metal carbonyls and related compounds. Covered areas include trivalent, tetravalent, pentavalent, and hexavalent actinides, and structures and reactions of halogeno metal carbonyls. The compilation is a valuable source of information for readers interested in the study of halogens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a synthesis of two of Hudlicky's earlier books outlining the many unpredictable properties of fluorine and its compounds that are not analogous to the properties of any other halogens and their compounds. It is divided into two separate sections, the first presenting peculiar reactions as problems to be solved. Each reaction can be analyzed in the lab without the help of the second section, however if a solution is not easily reached, the second section provides discussion of the problems, outlining the products of the reactions and their mechanisms. Among the 105 reactions outlined are the introduction of fluorine into organic molecules, reduction and oxidation of fluorine compounds, reactions of fluorocompounds with halogens and their derivatives, nitration, acid catalyzed reactions, organometallic syntheses, and pyrolyses. The reactions are documented in the experimental material of the earlier volumes and will be important background knowledge for anyone working in organic chemistry.

Book excerpt: The book summarizes the knowledge and experiences concerning the role of halogens during various geochemical processes, such as diagenesis, ore-formation, magma evolution, metasomatism, mineralization, and metamorphism in the crust and mantle of the Earth. It comprises the role of halogens in other terrestrial worlds like volatile-rich asteroids, Mars, and the ice moons of Jupiter and Saturn. Review chapters outline and expand upon the basis of our current understanding regarding how halogens contribute to the geochemical/geophysical evolution and stability of terrestrial worlds overall.

Book excerpt: This handbook presents electronic structure data and tabulations of Slater-Koster parameters for the whole periodic table. This second edition presents data sets for all elements up to Z = 112, Copernicium, whereas the first edition contained only 53 elements. In this new edition, results are given for the equation of state of the elements together with the parameters of a Birch fit, so that the reader can regenerate the results and derive additional information, such as Pressure-Volume relations and variation of Bulk Modulus with Pressure. For each element, in addition to the equation of state, the energy bands, densities of states and a set of tight-binding parameters is provided. For a majority of elements, the tight-binding parameters are presented for both a two- and three-center approximation. For the hcp structure, new three-center tight-binding results are given. Other new material in this edition include: energy bands and densities of states of all rare-earth metals, a discussion of the McMillan-Gaspari-Gyorffy theories and a tabulation of the electron-ion interaction matrix elements. The evaluation of the Stoner criterion for ferromagnetism is examined and results are tabulated. This edition also contains two new appendices discussing the effects of spin-orbit interaction and a modified version of Harrison's tight-binding theory for metals which puts the theory on a quantitative basis.

Book excerpt: The main group elements represent the most prevalent elements in the Earth's crust, as well as most of the key elements of life, and have enormous industrial, economic, and environmental importance. In this regard an understanding of the chemistry of the main group elements is vital for students within science, engineering, and medicine; however, it is hoped that those who make political and economic decisions would make better ones (or at least more responsible ones) if they had a fraction of the knowledge of the world around them.
