Book excerpt: This report presents the results of a detailed investigation of the influence of time-dependent combustion gas flows on the attitude dynamics of spinning rocket propelled space vehicles. The work was motivated by a need to understand the origins of a potentially serious system performance problem first detected in the PAM-D series of spin stabilized upper stages. Small wobbling (often referred to as nutation or coning) induced during separation of the rocket motor burn. The growth ceased abruptly at motor burnout, and final cone angles as large as 17 deg were reached in some flights. The same phenomenon was encountered in two flights of the PAM-DII, a similar vehicle utilizing a larger motor. Conventional theories of spinning rocket dynamics failed to explain this behavior. Since the telemetry data shows that the severity of the problem depends on spacecraft mass properties and other system parameters, it is crucial that the origins of the instability be understood completely in order that serious mission degradation can be avoided in future orbit raising operations. A costly interim fix, which sidesteps the need to understand the physical origins of the problem, is the use of a strap-on nutation control system as used in the Air Force SGS II missions. This approach is in direct conflict with the philosophy of solid rocket space propulsion, which is based on its inherent simplicity and low cost.

A related survey of the experimental literature is reported in TM 67-2. The main emphasis in this report is placed upon possible applications to the study of the fluid mechanics in rotating rocket motors. Since this area is only now receiving analytical attention it was necessary to draw heavily upon the classical analytical studies of vortex tubes and swirling flows in cylinders and converging nozzles. A great deal of the classical fluid mechanics in this area is incompressible in nature, therefore, must be considered qualitative in relation to actual rocket motors. Conditions existing in the nozzle and chamber are reviewed. In addition other topics such as, end wall interactions and boundary layers are reported upon. The analytical models for the determination of the effects of acceleration on the burning rate of solid propellants which have been reported in two recent papers are reviewed. (Author).

Book excerpt: This study has two declared aims: it presents the theoretical basis for a provably ideal comparative process for relaxing flows (ICP) and jus tifies its application to jet and, in particular, rocket engines. This will be treated in two parts. Part I offers a status quo report on current calculation methods, and compiles and explains briefly the most important data on selected pro minent rocket engines. Starting from the phenomenology of the dynamical and physico-chemical conversion processes in the fuel-oxidizer fluid mixture and in the burned gases, the ideal thermodynamic comparative process is then derived - as a defined sequential change of states in the system. In order to render this comparative process readily under standable, it is first applied to an appropriate model gas using alge braic equations for all relevant parameters. This model gas undergoes energy conversion processes without forfeiting the simplicity of pre sentation typical of classical gas dynamics. Above all, examination of this model offers proof that it is generally impermissible to use, as is done in practice, the familiar isentropic equation for flow changes of state continuously propagated in flow tube theory. Elementary calculations immediately indicate essential attributes which are also typical for relaxing, multicomponent, one-phase systems, such as the significant 'pressure drop phenomenon' or the establishment of the steady mass flow rate as an 'eigenvalue' of the comparative pro cess. Their relevance to the RE theory is stressed.
