Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid film bearings are machine elements that should be studied within the broader context of tribology. The three subfields of tribology - friction, lubrication, and wear - are strongly interrelated. The last decade has witnessed significant advances in the area of fluid film lubrication and its applications, and this second edition offers a look at some of these advances. This edition adds to the fundamentals of fluid film lubrication, a discourse on surface effects and the inclusion of treatment of flow with significant inertia within the section on turbulence. Basic ideas of the multigrid method are conveyed along with multilevel multi-integration in the treatment of elastohydrodynamic lubrication. New chapters have been included on ultra-thin films, both liquid and gaseous, and lubrication of articulating joints and their replacement. Some of the most recent literature is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elasto-Hydrodynamic Lubrication deals with the mechanism of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication, that is, the lubrication regime in operation over the small areas where machine components are in nominal point or line contact. The lubrication of rigid contacts is discussed, along with the effects of high pressure on the lubricant and bounding solids. The governing equations for the solution of elasto-hydrodynamic problems are presented. Comprised of 13 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication and representation of contacts by cylinders, followed by a discussion on equations relevant to lubrication, including the Reynolds equation. The reader is then introduced to lubrication of rigid cylinders; the importance of film thickness in highly loaded rigid contacts; the elasticity of solids in contact; and the theory of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication. Subsequent chapters focus on apparatus and measurements of film thickness and film shape; friction and viscosity; and lubrication of gears and roller bearings. This book will be of interest to tribologists.

Tribology not only deals with the design of fluid containment systems like seals and gasket but also with the lubrication of surfaces in relative motion. This book comprehensively discusses the theories and applications of hydrodynamic thrust bearing, gas (air) lubricated bearing and elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication. It elucidates the concepts related to friction, including coefficient of friction, friction instability and stick-slip motion. It clarifies the misconception that harder and cleaner surfaces produce better results in wear. Recent developments, including online condition monitoring (an integration of moisture sensor, wear debris and oil quality sensors) and multigrid technique, are discussed in detail. The book also offers design problems and their real-life applications for cams, followers, gears and bearings. MATLAB programs, frequently asked questions and multiple choice questions are interspersed throughout for easy understanding of the topics.

Book excerpt: Hydrodynamic Lubrication is the culmination of over 20 years close, collaborative work by the five authors and discusses the practical use of the formalization of low pressure lubrication. The work concentrates on the developments to journal and thrust bearings and includes subjects such as: • the dynamic behaviour of plain and tilting-pads • the thermal aspects • the positive and negative effects of non-cyclindricity and shape defects resulting from manufacturing or operation • the effects of inertia • the appearance of Taylor's vortices and of turbulence and their repercussions. The book contains an abundance of test results objectively compared with theoretical conclusions and a chapter on "technical considerations" to ensure that draft mechanisms will work satisfactorily under the imposed conditions. Hydrodynamic Lubrication is an essential reference book for future and practising engineers who want to put hydrodynamic and hydrostatic journal bearings and thrust bearings into operation under conditions of total safety.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 961 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word tribology was fIrst reported in a landmark report by P. Jost in 1966 (Lubrication (Tribology)--A Report on the Present Position and Industry's Needs, Department of Education and Science, HMSO, London). Tribology is the science and technology of two interacting surfaces in relative motion and of related subjects and practices. The popular equivalent is friction, wear and lubrication. The economic impact of the better understanding of tribology of two interacting surfaces in relative motion is known to be immense. Losses resulting from ignorance of tribology amount in the United States alone to about 6 percent of its GNP or about $200 billion dollars per year (1966), and approximately one-third of the world's energy resources in present' use, appear as friction in one form or another. A fundamental understanding of the tribology of the head-medium interface in magnetic recording is crucial to the future growth of the $100 billion per year information storage industry. In the emerging microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) industry, tribology is also recognized as a limiting technology. The advent of new scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques (starting with the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope in 1981) to measure surface topography, adhesion, friction, wear, lubricant-fIlm thickness, mechanical properties all on a micro to nanometer scale, and to image lubricant molecules and the availability of supercomputers to conduct atomic-scale simulations has led to the development of a new fIeld referred to as Microtribology, Nanotribology, or Molecular Tribology (see B. Bhushan, J. N. Israelachvili and U.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid film bearings are among the best devices for overcoming friction and eliminating wear. They are machine elements and, together with shafts, gears, and cams, constitute the building blocks engineers use in the design and construction of mechanical devices. This book offers a systematic treatment of the fundamentals of fluid film lubrication and fluid film bearings. The introduction places fluid film bearings within the broader context of tribology, a subject that encompasses friction, lubrication, and wear. The early chapters provide a thorough discussion of classical tribological theory. The remainder of the book is devoted to more advanced topics of inertia, thermal and turbulence effects, lubrication of counterformal contacts, and non-Newtonian lubricants. Also included are developing areas, such as lubrication with emulsions. Graduate and senior undergraduate students, researchers, and practising engineers will appreciate this clear, thorough discussion of fluid film lubrication and fluid film bearings.

Book excerpt: The thirteenth Leeds-Lyon Tribology Symposium was devoted to the topic of Fluid Film Lubrication in celebration of the centenary of the publication of the classical paper by Professor Osborne Reynolds in which he identified the mechanism of hydrodynamic lubrication. These proceedings contain more than seventy papers, written by authors from all over the world, covering the entire spectrum of fluid film lubrication. Of particular interest is the detailed consideration of a wide range of machine elements - bearings, seals, cams, rolling elements, as well as the in-depth, state-of-the-art, analytical contributions.
