In addition, a child with reading difficulties might also have problems in the acquisition of writing and handwriting performance. This is an important point to be discussed, as reading and writing both suffer interference from vocabulary acquisition, linguistic skills, memory skills, reading and writing practices, and literacy methods. These processes become important only when the professional needs to deal with students presenting learning difficulties. Difficulty in using the knowledge of conversion rules between grapheme-phoneme to word reading construction or phoneme-grapheme for writing can be identified in schoolchildren with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dysortography, being a specific learning disorder with a neurological etiology. In addition, there is established evidence of a speech-language processing basis, students with specific learning disabilities can show a range of cognitive difficulties (e.g., rapid naming, executive functioning, working memory). These presented difficulties interfere in their learning process, impairing their learning development.

Specifically, there is considerable research concerning the components and subskills responsible for single word reading accuracy, with less attention given to fluency and comprehension at the connected text level. The goals of this dissertation are to extend current understanding of the development of reading fluency and to examine the potential role of other impairments in the development of dyslexia. A working developmental-componential fluency model will be proposed in which different reading levels, processes, and systems function as contributors to reading fluency. Three research questions will structure this study: (1) What are the predictive roles of accuracy and efficiency, at the letter-, word-, and connected-text level, for fluency development in diverse reading populations? (2) What roles do underlying processes such as naming speed, phonological and orthographic processes---play in letter, word and connected text-reading levels of average achievers and dyslexic readers? (3) Do different subtypes of impaired readers display differences in fluency at particular reading levels (e.g., letter, word, and connected text). To classify subtypes, the Double Deficit Hypothesis (DDH) (Wolf & Bowers, 1999) represents an integrative classification approach in which phonological deficits and the processes underlying naming speed are depicted as two largely independent sources of reading dysfunction, resulting in three reader subtypes. In the present study 160 severely impaired children and 30 average achieving children in first through third grade were assessed on a variety of fluency measures and reading subskills. The results demonstrated that a combination of naming speed, phonological, orthographic, and word reading measures only partially predicted fluent reading, thus indicating that fluency is multi-dimensional. In both groups of readers these measures were correlated with all three reading levels. Different patterns of correlations were found for children with dyslexia and average achievers. The three subtypes of children classified according to the DDH differed from each other on all reading and reading related processes, pointing to the different reading profiles diverse populations of readers have. Implications for diagnosis and intervention are discussed.

Although some disorders are fairly easily recognizable (e.g., mental retardation) or very specific to single components of performance and quite rare (e.g., developmental dyscalculia), schools must consider much larger populations of children with learning difficulties who cannot always be readily classified. These children present high-level learning difficulties that affect their performance on a variety of school tasks, but the underlying problem is often their difficulty in understanding written text. In many instances, despite good intellectual abilities and a superficial ability to cope with written texts and to use language appropriately, some children do not seem to grasp the most important elements, or cannot find the pieces of information they are looking for. Sometimes these difficulties are not immediately detected by the teacher in the early school years. They may be hidden because the most obvious early indicators of reading progress in the teacher's eyes do not involve comprehension of written texts or because the first texts a child encounters are quite simple and reflect only the difficulty level of the oral messages (sentences, short stories, etc.) with which the child is already familiar. However, as years go by and texts get more complex, comprehension difficulties will become increasingly apparent and increasingly detrimental to effective school learning. In turn, studying, assimilating new information, and many other situations requiring text comprehension -- from problem solving to reasoning with linguistic contents -- could be affected. Problems with decoding, dyslexia, and language disorders have attracted more interest from researchers than have specific comprehension problems and have occupied more room in specialized journals. Normal reading comprehension has also been a favorite with researchers. However, scarce interest has been paid to subjects who have comprehension difficulties. This book is an attempt to remedy this situation.
