Book excerpt: The research described in this report focused on the photolysis of a chemical substance giving a linear relation between the formation level of the photo product and the applied dose. Objectives were to: develop an online fluence meter based on a Uvsensitive chemical for which the formation level of the photo product has a clear relation with the applied UV dose, and to find naturally occurring substances or chemicals to be dosed that would be sensitive towards UVC light (200-285 nm) and would give accurately measurable photo products in the 0-1,000 J/m2 dose range. Based on an initial study, nitrate as a naturally occurring compound and the ferric ion/ ferrous ion (Fe3+/Fe2+) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)/benzoate systems as chemicals to be dosed were selected for further research.

Book excerpt: There is currently intense interest in the use of ultraviolet technology for helping to meet future regulations relating to improved microbial inactivation and decreased disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Much of this interest has been fueled by recent research indicating the effectiveness of UV technologies for the inactivation of Cryptosporidium. This scientific discovery, combined with proposed regulations concerning DBPs in the United States, has resulted in a need to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of UV irradiation for use as a disinfectant for drinking water. The objectives of this project were to:(1) develop and evaluate physical, chemical, and biological methods for calculating effective germicidal UV dose from medium-pressure (MP) and Pulsed-UV (P-UV) lamps;(2) establish a UV dose/log inactivation relationship for specific bacterial and viral indicators for MP and P-UV lamps;(3) determine the extent of photoreactivation and dark repair of heterotrophic bacteria after treatment by MP and P-UV lamps; and(4) compare the ability of MP and P-UV lamps to inactivate Cryptosporidium. Book excerpt: This research studied low pressure(LP), low pressure-high-output (LPHO, medium pressure(MP) and pulsed (PUV) UV Systems and their effects on various pathogens. Among the findings were: bacteria is more susceptible to UV light than viruses; some strains of E.coli had different dose responses without explanation; adenovirus serotypes 40 and 41 are highly resistant to UV inactivation and a residual disinfection process is recommended to follow UV disinfection. All details of the study and models are discussed thoroughly.

Ever since the recognition of the important role of water in the transmission of pathogenic micro-organisms in the 19th century, microbiological safety of drinking water has been a major research issue for microbiologists in the drinking water industry. The main objective of this book is to develop a general strategy to assess elimination capacity of water treatment processes for pathogens. It investigates: The potential use of faecal indicators Coli44, (including E. coli) and SSRC, (including C. perfringens) as process indicators to assess pathogen elimination in full-scale water treatment plants. The value of comparative challenge tests with pre-cultured organisms for the assessment of elimination capacity of full-scale processes, to study the effect of process conditions and to validate the use of process indicators. The use of literature data to assess elimination capacity of water treatment processes for pathogens and the effect of process conditions on this. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the treatment of water and exhaust gas using ultraviolet (UV) light offers both ecological and economic advantages, information on photo-initiated advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) has been dispersed among various journals and proceedings until now. This authoritative and comprehensive handbook is the first to cover both the photochemical fundamentals and practical applications, including a description of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and process engineering of suitable photoreactors. The author presents various real-world examples, including economic aspects, while many references to current scientific literature facilitate access to current research topics relevant for water and air industries. Throughout, over 140 detailed figures visualize photochemical and photophysical phenomena, and help in interpreting important research results. From the foreword by James R. Bolton (President of Bolton Photosciences Inc., Executive Director of the International Ultraviolet Association (IUVA)): "Prof. Oppenländer is well qualified to write about the AOPs/AOTs, since he has contributed to this literature in a very significant manner. This book will be of considerable value to graduate students, science and engineering faculty, scientists, process engineers and sales engineers in industry, government regulators and health professionals."

Book excerpt: The past thirty years have witnessed a growing worldwide desire that po- tive actions be taken to restore and protect the environment from the degr- ing effects of all forms of pollution—air, water, soil, and noise. Because pollution is a direct or indirect consequence of waste, the seemingly idealistic demand for “zero discharge” can be construed as an unrealistic demand for zero waste. However, as long as waste continues to exist, we can only attempt to abate the subsequent pollution by converting it to a less noxious form. Three major questions usually arise when a particular type of pollution has been id- tified: (1) How serious is the pollution? (2) Is the technology to abate it ava- able? and (3) Do the costs of abatement justify the degree of abatement achieved? This book is one of the volumes of the Handbook of Environmental Engineering series. The principal intention of this series is to help readers f- mulate answers to the last two questions above. The traditional approach of applying tried-and-true solutions to specific pollution problems has been a major contributing factor to the success of en- ronmental engineering, and has accounted in large measure for the establi- ment of a “methodology of pollution control. ” However, the realization of the ever-increasing complexity and interrelated nature of current environmental problems renders it imperative that intelligent planning of pollution abatement systems be undertaken.

Book excerpt: Food process engineering, a branch of both food science and chemical engineering, has evolved over the years since its inception and still is a rapidly changing discipline. While traditionally the main objective of food process engineering was preservation and stabilization, the focus today has shifted to enhance health aspects, flavour and taste, nutrition, sustainable production, food security and also to ensure more diversity for the increasing demand of consumers. The food industry is becoming increasingly competitive and dynamic, and strives to develop high quality, freshly prepared food products. To achieve this objective, food manufacturers are today presented with a growing array of new technologies that have the potential to improve, or replace, conventional processing technologies, to deliver higher quality and better consumer targeted food products, which meet many, if not all, of the demands of the modern consumer. These new, or innovative, technologies are in various stages of development, including some still at the R&D stage, and others that have been commercialised as alternatives to conventional processing technologies. Food process engineering comprises a series of unit operations traditionally applied in the food industry. One major component of these operations relates to the application of heat, directly or indirectly, to provide foods free from pathogenic microorganisms, but also to enhance or intensify other processes, such as extraction, separation or modification of components. The last three decades have also witnessed the advent and adaptation of several operations, processes, and techniques aimed at producing high quality foods, with minimum alteration of sensory and nutritive properties. Some of these innovative technologies have significantly reduced the thermal component in food processing, offering alternative nonthermal methods. Food Processing Technologies: A Comprehensive Review, Three Volume Set covers the latest advances in innovative and nonthermal processing, such as high pressure, pulsed electric fields, radiofrequency, high intensity pulsed light, ultrasound, irradiation and new hurdle technology. Each section will have an introductory article covering the basic principles and applications of each technology, and in-depth articles covering the currently available equipment (and/or the current state of development), food quality and safety, application to various sectors, food laws and regulations, consumer acceptance, advancements and future scope. It will also contain case studies and examples to illustrate state-of-the-art applications. Each section will serve as an excellent reference to food industry professionals involved in the processing of a wide range of food categories, e.g., meat, seafood, beverage, dairy, eggs, fruits and vegetable products, spices, herbs among others.
