Book Synopsis Biodiversity of the Southern Ocean by : Bruno David
Download or read book Biodiversity of the Southern Ocean written by Bruno David and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern Ocean surrounding the Antarctic continent is vast, in particular, its history, its isolation, and climate, making it a unique "laboratory case" for experimental evolution, adaptation and ecology. Its evolutionary history of adaptation provide a wealth of information on the functioning of the biosphere and its potential. The Southern Ocean is the result of a history of nearly 40 million years marked by the opening of the Straits south of Australia and South America and intense cooling. The violence of its weather, its very low temperatures, the formation of huge ice-covered areas, as its isolation makes the Southern Ocean a world apart. This book discusses the consequences for the evolution, ecology and biodiversity of the region, including endemism, slowed metabolism, longevity, gigantism, and its larval stages; features which make this vast ocean a "natural laboratory" for exploring the ecological adaptive processes, scalable to work in extreme environmental conditions. Today, biodiversity of the Southern Ocean is facing global change, particularly in regional warming and acidification of water bodies. Unable to migrate further south, how will she cope, if any, to visitors from the North? - Designed for curious readers to discover the immense ocean surrounding the most isolated and most inhospitable continent on the planet. - Describes the Southern Ocean facing biodiversification due to global change - Authored by scientists with experience of expeditions to the Southern Ocean

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LA STRUCTURE PROFONDE DES PRINCIPALES UNITES MORPHO-STRUCTURALES DU PLATEAU SOUS-MARIN DE KERGUELEN (PLATEAU DE KERGUELEN-HEARD AU NORD ET BASSIN DE RAGGATT AU SUD) ET DU BASSIN OCEANIQUE D'ENDERBY EST PRESENTEE A PARTIR DE L'ANALYSE DES DONNEES DE SISMIQUE GRAND-ANGLE DE LA CAMPAGNE MD66/KEOBS. LES TEMPS D'ARRIVEE DES ONDES ONT ETE MODELISES AVEC LA METHODE D'INVERSION ITERATIVE AU SENS DES MOINDRES CARRES DE ZELT & SMITH (1992) ; LES AMPLITUDES ONT ETE MODELISEES A L'AIDE DE SISMOGRAMMES SYNTHETIQUES CALCULES AVEC LA METHODE DE LA REFLECTIVITE (FUCHS & MULLER, 1971). L'EPAISSEUR IMPORTANTE DE LA CROUTE DU BASSIN D'ENDERBY (10-13 KM) SUGGERE QUE SA MISE EN PLACE A ETE AFFECTEE PAR LA PROXIMITE DU POINT CHAUD DE KERGUELEN AU CRETACE. LES COEFFICIENTS DE POISSON DANS LA CROUTE, ESTIMES A PARTIR DE L'ANALYSE DES ONDES P ET DES ONDES CONVERTIES P-S ENREGISTREES SUR LES TROIS COMPOSANTES DES OBS (STATIONS SISMIQUES SOUS-MARINES), SONT COMPARABLES A CEUX MESURES EN LABORATOIRE SUR DES ECHANTILLONS OPHIOLITIQUES. LA CROUTE DU DOMAINE NORD DU PLATEAU DE KERGUELEN A UNE EPAISSEUR (21-23 KM) ET UNE LOI DE VITESSE EN FONCTION DE LA PROFONDEUR COMPATIBLES AVEC UN MODELE DE PLATEAU OCEANIQUE (COUCHE 3 TRES EPAISSE, VITESSES ELEVEES (>7,2 KM/S) A LA BASE DE LA CROUTE). SA MISE EN PLACE RESULTERAIT DE L'ACTION DU POINT CHAUD DE KERGUELEN SUR OU A PROXIMITE DE LA DORSALE SEPARANT LA PLAQUE INDIENNE DE LA PLAQUE AUSTRALO-ANTARCTIQUE ENTRE 130 ET 100 MA, SELON UNE CONFIGURATION COMPARABLE A CELLE DE L'ISLANDE ACTUELLE. LA STRUCTURE DU DOMAINE SUD DU PLATEAU DE KERGUELEN MONTRE DES DIFFERENCES SIGNIFICATIVES COMPARATIVEMENT A CELLE DU DOMAINE NORD. LA CROUTE, D'UNE EPAISSEUR DE 22-23 KM, EST CONSTITUEE D'UNE CROUTE SUPERIEURE AVEC DES VITESSES COMPARABLES A CELLE DE LA COUCHE 2 OCEANIQUE ET UNE CROUTE INFERIEURE DE 15-16 KM D'EPAISSEUR. LA CROUTE INFERIEURE EST CARACTERISEE PAR UNE AUGMENTATION REGULIERE DE LA VITESSE ENTRE DES VALEURS DE 6,6 KM/S A 9 KM DE PROFONDEUR ET 6,9 KM/S A 19 KM DE PROFONDEUR. ENTRE 19 ET 25 KM DE PROFONDEUR, LA CROUTE EST REFLECTIVE COMME LE MONTRENT PLUSIEURS REFLEXIONS GRAND-ANGLE ENREGISTREES AUX DISTANCES PRE-CRITIQUES ENTRE L'ONDE REFRACTEE DANS LA CROUTE INFERIEURE NON REFLECTIVE ET L'ONDE PMP, REFLECHIE SUR LE MOHO. LA CROUTE INFERIEURE REFLECTIVE A PLUSIEURS PROPRIETES ORIGINALES: 1 ELLE CONSTITUE, EN MOYENNE, UNE ZONE A FAIBLE VITESSE A LA BASE DE LA CROUTE (VITESSE MOYENNE: 6,7 KM/S) ; 2 LA CROUTE INFERIEURE N'EST REFLECTIVE QUE DANS UNE DIRECTION PARALLELE A L'AXE DU PLATEAU ; ELLE EST ASSOCIEE A UNE ANISOTROPIE (APPARENTE ?) DE VITESSE DANS LA CROUTE INFERIEURE REFLECTIVE AVEC UN AXE LENT PARALLELE A L'AXE DU PLATEAU ; 3 LA REFLECTIVITE SEMBLE DIMINUER DU SUD-EST VERS LE NORD-EST ; 4 UNE ANISOTROPIE DE VITESSE EST OBSERVEE DANS LE MANTEAU SUPERIEUR AVEC UN AXE RAPIDE DANS LA DIRECTION PARALLELE A L'AXE DU PLATEAU. LES VITESSES (6,6-6,9 KM/S) DANS LA CROUTE INFERIEURE NON REFLECTIVE SONT ATYPIQUES D'UNE CROUTE OCEANIQUE D'UNE VINGTAINE DE KILOMETRES D'EPAISSEUR, SUPPOSEE RICHE EN CONSTITUANTS ULTRAMAFIQUES. LA STRUCTURE DU BASSIN DE RAGGATT EST, PAR CONTRE, COMPARABLE A CELLE D'UNE CROUTE CONTINENTALE FAIBLEMENT ETIREE DANS LA DIRECTION NNW-SSE ET RECOUVERTE DE COULEES VOLCANIQUES. LA REFLECTIVITE DE LA CROUTE INFERIEURE RESULTERAIT DE CISAILLEMENTS DUCTILES DANS SA PARTIE SUPERIEURE ET D'INTRUSIONS MAGMATIQUES DANS SA PARTIE INFERIEURE. L'ORIGINE DU PLATEAU DE KERGUELEN EST INTIMEMENT LIEE A L'HISTOIRE CRETACEE DES CONTINENTS ADJACENTS. LES DOMAINES NORD ET SUD DU PLATEAU DE KERGUELEN REPRESENTERAIENT RESPECTIVEMENT L'ISLANDE ET LA MARGE HATTON BANK
Book Synopsis Late Quaternary Sea-Level Correlation and Applications by : D.B. Scott
Download or read book Late Quaternary Sea-Level Correlation and Applications written by D.B. Scott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute, "Late Quaternary Sea-level Correlation and Applications", was held together with the Final Meeting of IGCP Project 200 in Halifax, Canada, 19-30 July 1987. This Volume is a collection of the NATO Keynote Papers presented at this meeting. The authors of these papers are from seven of the NATO countries - two each from France, the U. K. , Canada, and the U. S . A. , and one each from Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. With these authors, we are able to assemble work from virtually all of the world's oceans with several different approaches. The Volume is dedicated to Walter S. Newman, one of the best known and best liked sea-level workers of our time who died shortly before this Conference. This Volume contains one of his last contributions and all contributors to this Volume are honoured to be in the company of Walter's last work. There are several papers from North Atlantic countries dealing with Holocene sea level in a variety of ways. Shennan summarizes data from the U. K. and makes a preliminary effort to place the data in the context of a model. Zazo & Goy present new data from the coast of Spain and place it in a stratigraphical context. Van de P1assche re assesses previous data and adds new data to the very sea-level sensitive Dutch coast. Leatherman uses sea-level information in the Chesapeake Region to assess coastal management problems.

Download or read book Quaternary Sea-level Changes written by Colin V. Murray-Wallace and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There have been significant changes in sea level over the past two million years, and a complete understanding of natural cycles of change as well as anthropogenic effects is imperative for future global development. This book reviews the history of research into these sea-level changes and summarises the methods and analytical approaches used to interpret evidence for sea-level changes. It provides an overview of changing climates during the Quaternary, examines processes responsible for global variability of sea-level records, and presents detailed reviews of sea-level changes for the Pleistocene and Holocene. The book concludes by discussing current trends in sea levels and likely future sea-level changes. This is an important and authoritative resource for academic researchers and graduate and advanced undergraduate students working in tectonics, stratigraphy, geomorphology, physical geography, environmental science and other aspects of Quaternary studies"--

Book Synopsis Late Glacial and Postglacial Environmental Changes by : Ireneo Peter Martini
Download or read book Late Glacial and Postglacial Environmental Changes written by Ireneo Peter Martini and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of contributed papers reconstructs events following the major Paleozoic glaciation, using as analog events during the last 18,000 years. The detailed analysis of present environments aids in understanding what triggered the ancient deglaciations; conversely, the study of the ancient geological record helps to identify factors that influence global environmental change. The syntheses and analyses of Quaternary and older glacial products and events foster a better understanding of those periods in which rapid climatic and environmental changes occurred, and they constitute a ready source of information for analyzing other ancient geological records or constructing models for possible future changes.
