This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief addresses two issues of interest of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection. The first issue is the characterization and understanding of the statistics of the velocity and temperature fluctuations in the system. The second issue is the revelation and understanding of the nature of the scaling behavior of the velocity temperature structure functions. The problem under the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation is formulated. The statistical tools, including probability density functions (PDF) and conditional statistics, for studying fluctuations are introduced, and implicit PDF formulae for fluctuations obeying certain statistical symmetries are derived. Applications of these PDF formulae to study the fluctuations in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection are then discussed. The phenomenology of the different types of scaling behavior: the Bolgiano-Obhukov scaling behavior when buoyancy effects are significant and the Kolmogorov-Obukhov-Corrsin scaling behavior when they are not, is introduced. A crossover between the two types of scaling behavior is expected to occur at the Bolgiano length scale above which buoyancy is important. The experimental observations are reviewed. In the central region of the convective cell, the Kolmogorov-Obukhov-Corrsin scaling behavior has been observed. On the other hand, the Bolgiano-Obukhov scaling remains elusive only until recently. By studying the dependence of the conditional temperature structure functions on the locally averaged thermal dissipation rate, evidence for the Bolgiano-Obukhov scaling has recently been found near the bottom plate. The different behaviors observed in the two regions could be attributed to the different size of the Bolgiano scale. What physics determines the relative size of the Bolgiano scale remains to be understood. The Brief is concluded by a discussion of these outstanding issues.

Book excerpt: This book addresses nearly all aspects of the state of the art in LES & DNS of turbulent flows, ranging from flows in biological systems and the environment to external aerodynamics, domestic and centralized energy production, combustion, propulsion as well as applications of industrial interest. Following the advances in increased computational power and efficiency, several contributions are devoted to LES & DNS of challenging applications, mainly in the area of turbomachinery, including flame modeling, combustion processes and aeroacoustics. The book includes work presented at the tenth Workshop on 'Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation' (DLES-10), which was hosted in Cyprus by the University of Cyprus, from May 27 to 29, 2015. The goal of the workshop was to establish a state of the art in DNS, LES and related techniques for the computation and modeling of turbulent and transitional flows. The book is of interest to scientists and engineers, both in the early stages of their career and at a more senior level.

Book excerpt: This collection of articles has its origin in a meeting which took place June 12-15, 1989, on the grounds of Salve Regina College in Newport, Rhode Island. The meeting was blessed by beautiful, balmy weather and an idyllic setting. The sessions themselves took place in Ochre Court, one of the elegant and stately old summer cottages for which Newport is acclaimed. Lectures were presented in the grand ballroom overlooking the famous Cliff Walk and Block Island Sound. Counter to general belief, the pleasant surroundings did not appear to encourage truancy or in any other way diminish the quality of the meeting. On the contrary, for the four days of the meeting there was a high level of excitement and optimism about the new perspectives in turbulence, a tone that carried over to lively dinner and evening discussions. The participants represented a broad range of backgrounds, extending from pure mathemat ics to experimental engineering. A dialogue began with the first speakers which cut across the boundaries and gave to the meeting a mood of unity which persisted.

Book excerpt: This invaluable book presents a concise but systematic account of the formation of spatial flow structures in a horizontal fluid layer heated from below. Flows of this type, known as Rayleigh-Bénard convection, show important features of behaviour inherent not only in various hydrodynamic-instability phenomena but also in nonlinear pattern-forming processes in other contexts. The book describes the basic methods of investigating convection patterns, and the types of two- and three-dimensional flows, pattern defects, and sequences of convection-regime changes. The author pays special attention to the question of how various factors (mainly reducible to initial and boundary conditions) determine the shapes and sizes of the structures which develop. In this way, the role of order and disorder in flow patterns, as a factor strongly affecting the character of the evolution of structures, is revealed. The presentation emphasizes the physical picture of these phenomena, without excessive mathematical detail.

Turbulent superstructures are horizontally extended large-scale flow patterns that emerge despite the presence of strong fluctuations. They persist for long time scales, evolve slowly compared to the fluctuations, and their extent increases with increasing driving. This phenomenon is observed in large-aspect-ratio experiments and simulations and is very important for various geo- and astrophysical flows. There are many open questions regarding their origin and dynamics, and we study some aspect...

Book excerpt: This book gathers the proceedings of the 12th instalment in the bi-annual Workshop series on Direct and Large Eddy Simulation (DLES), which began in 1994 and focuses on modern techniques used to simulate turbulent flows based on the partial or full resolution of the instantaneous turbulent flow structure. With the rapidly expanding capacities of modern computers, this approach has attracted more and more interest over the years and will undoubtedly be further enhanced and applied in the future. Hybrid modelling techniques based on a combination of LES and RANS approaches also fall into this category and are covered as well. The goal of the Workshop was to share the state of the art in DNS, LES and related techniques for the computation and modelling of turbulent and transitional flows. The respective papers highlight the latest advances in the prediction, understanding and control of turbulent flows in academic and industrial applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buoyancy is one of the main forces driving flows on our planet, especially in the oceans and atmosphere. These flows range from buoyant coastal currents to dense overflows in the ocean, and from avalanches to volcanic pyroclastic flows on the Earth's surface. This book brings together contributions by leading world scientists to summarize our present theoretical, observational, experimental and modeling understanding of buoyancy-driven flows. Buoyancy-driven currents play a key role in the global ocean circulation and in climate variability through their impact on deep-water formation. Buoyancy-driven currents are also primarily responsible for the redistribution of fresh water throughout the world's oceans. This book is an invaluable resource for advanced students and researchers in oceanography, geophysical fluid dynamics, atmospheric science and the wider Earth sciences who need a state-of-the-art reference on buoyancy-driven flows.
