Book excerpt: Fluctuating wall pressure measurements have been made beneath the shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction generated by a sharp, unswept fin at angle of attack. Tests were conducted at Mach 5 with a freestream unit Reynolds number of 47.88 x 106 /m. The boundary layer developed naturally on the tunnel floor under approximately adiabatic temperature conditions. From visual inspection and standard time series analysis of fluctuating wall pressure signals, it has been shown that the separation shock wave undergoes a translating, intermittent type motion for fin angles between 16 and 28 degrees. Both the mean wall pressures and higher order moments are quasi-conically symmetric when collapsed in a conical coordinate system. Finally, the maximum wall pressure standard deviation in the intermittent region has been shown to scale with the sweep of the interaction and not with the inviscid pressure rise as has been previously suggested in the literature ... Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests were performed which simulated the flow pulsations which are sometimes produced in engine inlets by shock-boundary layer interaction. Shock Mach numbers from 1.2 to 1.4 were used and the boundary layer was influenced by air bleeding in or sucking off. The flow was observed by shodowgraph and static and total pressures were measured by means of low frequency and high frequency response instruments. Static wall pressures, boundary layer pressure profiles, and total pressure distributions across several tunnel cross sections were plotted. The data were analyzed with respect to their rms value and power spectral density. A literature survey and an analytical investigation of the pulsations in a diffuser with nonviscous flow are included. (Author).

Book excerpt: Experimental results of an investigation of the three-dimensional interaction between a skewed shock wave and a turbulent boundary layer are presented. Surface pressure and heat transfer distributions and oil flow photographs were obtained at a freestream Mach number of 5.85 and two Reynolds numbers of ten and twenty million per foot. The model configuration consisted of a shock generator mounted perpendicularly to a flat plate. The shock generator leading edge was sharp and nonswept and intersected the flat plate surface about 8.5 inches downstream of the flat plate leading edge. The shock generator surface was 7.55 inches long and 3 inches high and its angle to the freestream flow was adjusted from 4 to 20 degrees. The generated shock waves were of sufficient strength to produce turbulent boundary layer separation on the flat plate surface.

Book excerpt: This experimental study was carried out at a free-stream Mach number of 0.6 and a Reynolds number per foot of 3.45 x 106. The magnitudes of the wall-pressure fluctuations agree with the Lilley-Hodgson theoretical results. Space-time correlations of the wall-pressure fluctuations generally agree with Willmarth's results for longitudinal separation distances. The convection velocity of the fluctuations is found to increase with increasing separation distances, and its significance is explained. Measurements with the longitudinal component of the velocity fluctuations indicate that the contributions to the wall-pressure fluctuations are from two regions, an inner region near the wall and an outer region linked with the intermittency.
