Book excerpt: The book "Flowing Harmony: Navigating The Riverine Ecosystem" delves into the intricate dynamics and rich biodiversity of river ecosystems, offering a comprehensive exploration of their ecological significance and the myriad interactions that shape their existence. Authored by esteemed environmental scientists and ecologists, this seminal work serves as a beacon illuminating the importance of rivers as lifelines of the planet. The book begins by laying a foundation of understanding, elucidating the fundamental components of riverine ecosystems. It navigates through the diverse habitats encompassed within river systems, from the headwaters to the estuaries, unravelling the unique adaptations of flora and fauna that thrive in each niche. Through meticulous research and vivid descriptions, the authors paint a vivid portrait of the interconnectedness of life along the riverbanks. One of the central themes explored in the book is the intricate web of relationships that sustains river ecosystems. Readers are introduced to the concept of trophic cascades and the pivotal role played by keystone species in maintaining ecological balance. From the predatory prowess of apex predators to the symbiotic relationships between plants and aquatic organisms, every aspect of the riverine food web is meticulously discussed. However, "Flowing Harmony: Navigating The Riverine Ecosystem" does not shy away from addressing the myriad challenges threatening the health and resilience of these vital ecosystems. Pollution, habitat degradation, overexploitation of resources, and the looming spectre of climate change cast a shadow over the pristine beauty of rivers worldwide. The book underscores the urgent need for concerted conservation efforts and sustainable management practices to safeguard these invaluable natural treasures for future generations. Furthermore, the text serves as a call to action, urging policymakers, conservationists, and the general public to recognize the intrinsic value of rivers beyond their utilitarian functions. It advocates for holistic approaches to river management that prioritize ecosystem health and resilience, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human well-being with the vitality of river ecosystems. "Flowing Harmony: Navigating The Riverine Ecosystem" transcends disciplinary boundaries, appealing to ecologists, biologists, environmentalists, policymakers, and anyone with a vested interest in understanding and preserving the intricate tapestry of life woven within river corridors. With its blend of scientific rigor, ecological insights, and impassioned advocacy, this book stands as a testament to the enduring beauty and importance of rivers in shaping the fabric of our planet.

Book excerpt: The impacts of climate variability and change are global concerns but in Bangladesh they are particularly critical. FAO and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre are guiding a project to assess livelihood adaptation to climate variability and change in the drought-prone areas of Northwest Bangladesh. It covers: the characterisation of livelihood systems; profiling of vulnerable groups; assessment of past and current climate impacts; and understanding of local perceptions of climate impacts, local coping capacities and existing adaptation strategies. It also is developing a good practice adaptation option menu, evaluating and field testing locally selected options, and introducing long-lead climate forecasting, capacity building and training of Department of Agricultural Extension staff and community representatives. This report summarises the project methodology and discusses interim findings and recommendations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses basic questions concerning the ecological relationships and current conditions of the major river systems in Florida . . There have been relatively few comprehensive studies made of the rivers of Florida. There is, to be sure, voluminous information that addresses various aspects of riverine ecology. However, little such information has been collected in a way that allows even a preliminary understanding of the driving forces that determine how the diverse freshwater and associated brackish systems function. This lack of useful data is the product of a fundamental ignorance concerning the scale of endeavor, both spatially and temporally, that is needed if we are to understand and, parenthetically, manage the major drainage systems of this area of the country (Livingston, 1987). Research used to address management problems should entail a continuous series of interrelated studies, descriptive and experimental, that answer the immediate (and often less important) questions that are asked on a day-to-day basis. The research should also be designed to answer questions that have not yet been asked. In other words, ecosystem research should be organized on an appropriate scale so that system-wide processes are understood and pr

Book excerpt: With the rapid development of Chinese urbanization in the 21st century, "urban diseases" become more serious, mainly manifested in water environmental pollution, urban flooding, water shortage, and deterioration of water ecology. It is necessary to establish a modern rainwater management system, scientifically solve the problem of excess urban rainwater and to improve water environment quality. Improvement of water environment quality is conducive to the ecological function of a sponge city. Sponge city construction has contributed to control non-point source pollution. Sponge systems cause the stagnation and purification of rainwater runoff, which is an important guarantee for water environment quality. This monograph summarizes theories and practices of the integrated water environment treatment in Chongqing, a typical representative mountainous city in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region. Based on the mountainous terrain and unique water environment characteristics in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region, the monograph analyzes measures and difficulties in the basin water environment integrated treatment. Moreover, the monograph makes suggestions for risk management amid drainage systems during the COVID-19 epidemic.

With rapid demographic and economic growth, the current state of degradation has antecedents beginning hundreds of years ago. Patterns of China's Lost Harmony combines historical documentation with contemporary assessment to determine the degree of human impact upon the country's vegetation, soils, water, air and wildlife. This will serve as an important reference tool for understanding the historical scope of environmental degradation and for assessing attempts to control environmental degradation since the 1980s.

Book excerpt: New Understandings of Twin Relationships takes an experience-based approach to exploring how twin attachment and estrangement are critical to understanding the push and pull of closely entwined personal relationships. Based on the research expertise of each of the authors (all identical twins in their own right), and vignettes from twins across the globe, this book describes the inner workings of the twin-world, showing how the twin-world creates experiences that are often more intense and intricately textured than those in the singleton-world. Chapters debunk myths surrounding twinship and analyze the developmental stages of the twin relationship as well as the effect of being a twin on one’s mental health from different perspectives. The authors articulate how attachment, separation anxiety, loneliness, estrangement, and the subjective experience of the twin and non-twin "other" impact behavior, thinking, and feeling. Through its careful study of the many psychological challenges that twins face throughout their lifetime, this text will help psychologists, scholars, clinicians, and twins themselves attain a deeper understanding of all interpersonal relationships.

Book excerpt: The four decades long ideological-based insurgencies and conflict in the Kabul River Basin (KRB) have seriously hampered the relations and foreign policies of both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Consequently, it restricts them to solve various bilateral issues including transboundary waters. This lack of cooperation over shared water resources is one of the barriers to achieve inclusive and sustainable development. Additionally, it has contributed to the prevailing anarchic situation where each country does what it wants. The absence of a formal water-sharing mechanism coupled with poor water management practices within both the riparian counties are resulting various flow and administration-related challenges. Moreover, these challenges are further exacerbated by regional changes in social, political, environmental and economic systems. The scholarly literature suggests that an analytical transboundary water governance framework is essential to address the challenges of water politicisation and securitisation, quality degradation and quantity reduction. Additionally, the literature rarely integrates (a) a multi-level approach, (b) an institutional approach (c) an inclusive development approach, or (d) accounts for the uses of different types of water and their varied ecosystem services for improved transboundary water governance. To enhance human wellbeing and achieve inclusive and sustainable development in the KRB this research indicates that it is essential to: (1) defrost frozen collaboration; (2) bypass border dispute; (3) use biodiversity and ecosystem services approach; (4) address existing and potential natural and anthropogenic challenges; (5) remove contradictions in the policy environment; (6) combat resource limits and dependence by promoting collaboration on long-term cost effective solutions; and (7) enhance knowledge and dialogue on inclusive development.
