Book excerpt: Helium bubble flow visualizations have been performed to study perpendicular interaction of a turbulent trailing vortex and a rectangular wing in the Virginia Tech Stability Tunnel. Many combinations of vortex strength, vortex-blade separation (Z(sub s)) and blade angle of attack were studied. Photographs of representative cases are presented. A range of phenomena were observed. For Z(sub s) greater than a few percent chord the vortex is deflected as it passes the blade under the influence of the local streamline curvature and its image in the blade. Initially the interaction appears to have no influence on the core. Downstream, however, the vortex core begins to diffuse and grow, presumably as a consequence of its interaction with the blade wake. The magnitude of these effects increases with reduction in Z(sub s). For Z(sub s) near zero the form of the interaction changes and becomes dependent on the vortex strength. For lower strengths the vortex appears to split into two filaments on the leading edge of the blade, one passing on the pressure and one passing on the suction side. At higher strengths the vortex bursts in the vicinity of the leading edge. In either case the core of its remnants then rapidly diffuse with distance downstream. Increase in Reynolds number did not qualitatively affect the flow apart from decreasing the amplitude of the small low-frequency wandering motions of the vortex. Changes in wing tip geometry and boundary layer trip had very little effect. Rife, Michael C. and Davenport, William J. Unspecified Center...

A primary goal of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the various methods of modeling the vortex. The model problem restricts the interaction to that of an infinite wing with an infinite line vortex moving parallel to its leading edge. This problem provides a convenient testing ground for the various methods of modeling the vortex while retaining the essential physics of the full three-dimensional interaction. A full-potential algorithm specifically tailored to solve the blade-vortex interaction (BVI) was developed to solve this problem. The basic algorithm was modified to include the effect of a vortex passing near the airfoil. Four different methods of modeling the vortex were used: (1) the angle-of-attack methods, (2) the lifting-surface method, (3) the branch-cut method, and (4) the split-potential method. A side-by-side comparison of the four models was conducted. these comparisons included comparing generated velocity fields, a subcritical interaction, and a critical interaction. The subcritical and critical interactions are compared with experimentally generate results. The split-potential model was used to make a survey of some of the more critical parameters which affect the BVI.

Book excerpt: Previous investigations of oscillating (harmonic) flow past circular cylinders via the discrete vortex method have met with limited success due to a variety of reasons. These assumptions have proven to be too severe, and cannot allow the prediction of the kinematics and dynamics of the oscillating flow about bluff bodies in general and about a circular cylinder in particular. In the current analysis, the ambient velocity was given by U = Um sin wt, and the velocity distribution and the boundary layer were calculated about the cylinder at suitable time intervals. Several methods were implemented to predict separation, all of which required a minimum of arbitrary assumptions. Nascent vortices were placed at the separation points in such a manner that the Kutta condition was satisfied. Several functional forms of dissipation were investigated, but it was found not to be of overriding influence in the flow kinematics. Counter vortices were found to be a necessary aspect of the analysis, providing continuity from one half cycle to the next. Flow visualization experiments were conducted for a Keulegan-Carpenter number of 10 as a basis for comparison. The kinematics obtained from the numerical model produced a vortex shedding pattern which was typical of those observed experimentally for higher Keulegan-Carpenter numbers. Significant problems were encountered in the prediction of boundary layer separation. At this point, it was obvious that the interaction of a vortex with a boundary layer warranted analysis in a much simpler flow situation; the blade-vortex interaction (BVI) problem proved to be ideal.

Book excerpt: A computational procedure and some numerical results of unsteady interaction of a helicopter rotor blade with a Lamb-like vortex of finite viscous core in subsonic and transonic flows is presented. The interaction considered here is one of the limiting cases of a more complex interaction typically encountered on helicopter rotor blade. In this limit, the interacting flow field is considered to be unsteady but two-dimensional. Accordingly, unsteady, two-dimensional, thin-layer Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a prescribed-vortex method (also called perturbation method) for the cases of stationary and moving rotor blades encountering a moving vortex passing the blades. The numerical results are compared with the recent experimental data of Caradonna et al. for the latter case. The comparison shows that for the transonic cases, the flow field is dominated by the presence of the shock waves, with strong indications of unsteady time lags in the shock-wave motions and shock-wave strengths, and of important three-dimensional effects. For subcritical-flow cases, however, the unsteady lag effects on the basic rotor blade are absent, and three-dimensional effects appear to be negligible, unlike the supercritical case. The subcritical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Their usefulness lies in their unique ability to take off and land vertically, to hover stationary relative to the ground, and to fly forward, backward, or sideways. These unique flying qualities, however, come at a high cost including complex aerodynamic problems, significant vibrations, high levels of noise, and relatively large power requirements compared to fixed-wing aircraft. This book, written by an internationally recognized expert, provides a thorough, modern treatment of the aerodynamic principles of helicopters and other rotating-wing vertical lift aircraft. Every chapter is extensively illustrated and concludes with a bibliography and homework problems. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students, practising engineers, and researchers will welcome this thorough and up-to-date text on rotating-wing aerodynamics.

The text begins with a unique technical history of helicopter flight, and then covers basic methods of rotor aerodynamic analysis, and related issues associated with the performance of the helicopter and its aerodynamic design. It goes on to cover more advanced topics in helicopter aerodynamics, including airfoil flows, unsteady aerodynamics, dynamic stall, and rotor wakes, and rotor-airframe aerodynamic interactions, with final chapters on autogiros and advanced methods of helicopter aerodynamic analysis. Extensively illustrated throughout, each chapter includes a set of homework problems. Book excerpt: This book reports on advanced strategies to design, modeling and testing morphing wings for aeronautical applications. Covering the major outcomes of the multidisciplinary project “Smart Morphing & Sensing” (H2020 N° 723402 SMS), funded by the European Union between 2017 and 2020, it presents a complete set of theories and methods that have been used and developed to integrate novel electroactive actuators and sensors in wings, for the purpose of increasing their aerodynamic efficiency and attenuate vibrations and noise. Topics include: integrated aeroelastic design of morphing wings using high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics and structural mechanics, distributed sensing using a new generation of high-fidelity fiber optics sensors, and controller design by appropriate flight control commands. Further, the book reports on advanced experimental techniques to validate novel actuation and sensing systems on the built prototypes via wind tunnel tests at subsonic (take-off and landing) and transonic (cruise) speeds. All in all, this volume provides readers with extensive and timely information on research and developments of bioinspired aircraft wings.
