Book excerpt: A water flow visualization facility was constructed in order to investigate the mixing processes inside of four-inlet ducted rocket engines (DRE) with various flow rates and geometries. The observed flow fields were documented with video and conventional photography so that relationships between various geometric/flow parameters and the flow field behavior could be obtained.

This book was released on 1962 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An investigation was conducted in order to evaluate the static thrust augmentation attainable through the use of a rocket-ejector system with a heated supersonic primary jet. This system consisted of a cylindrical mixing tube in conjunction with a supersonic nozzle having an expansion ratio of 15 to 1. A hydrogen peroxide gas generator was used to provide heated nozzle flow. An ejector with a bellmouthed inlet provided thrust augmentation up to about 18 percent of the primary rocket thrust, whereas the use of a blunt-lip inlet with elliptical profile provided augmentation up to 9 percent. Axial withdrawal of the rocket nozzle from the ejector provided small gains in thrust augmentation."--P.[1]

This book was released on 1993 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three distinct inlet-side-dump ramjet-combustor geometric configurations were investigated. Non-intrusive watertunnel flow-visualization techniques were utilized to qualitatively determine optimum flame-stabilization dome lengths and fuel-injection locations. The results were in good agreement with the results from previous studies. The optimum dome lengths which provided good fuel distribution and steady mixing all had lengths between 0.31 D and 1.4 D. Fuel injection in a narrow region on the upstream side of the inlet cross section was the only location capable of distributing fuel into the flame- holding region. Multiple injection locations in the inlet were required to distribute fuel uniformly into the main combustion region. The dual, axially-in- line side-dump configuration demonstrated the best potential for increasing performance across a wide range of operating conditions due to the ancillary combustion region between the inlets and the ability to control the size and strength of the region by varying air mass flow through the two inlet dumps.

This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generalized study of base flow phenomena was conducted with four 500-pound-thrust JP-4 fuel - liquid-oxygen rocket motors installed in the base of a 12-inch-diameter cylindrical model. Data were obtained over a Mach number and nozzle pressure ratio range of 2.0 to 3.5 and 340 to 6800, respectively. Base heat flux, gas temperature, and pressure were highest in the center of the cluster core and decreased in a radial direction. Although a maximum heat flux of 93 Btu per square foot per second was measured within the cluster core, peripheral heat fluxes were low, averaging about 5 Btu per square foot per second for all configurations. Generally base heat flux was found to be independent of Mach number over the range investigated. Base heat flux within the cluster core was decreased by increasing motor spacing, motor extension, a combination of increasing nozzle area ratio and decreasing exit angle, and gimbaling the two side engines. Small amounts of nitrogen injected within the cluster core sharply reduced core heat flux. (Author).
Book Synopsis Water Flow Visualisation of Ramrocket Combustion Chamber by : P. J. Boszko
Download or read book Water Flow Visualisation of Ramrocket Combustion Chamber written by P. J. Boszko and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow within the combustion chamber of a ramrocket was investigated using water flow visualization with air bubbles as tracers. Configurations with four axisymmetric intakes entering the combustion chamber at either 45 deg or 90 deg were considered. A region of stable recirculatory flow was identified at the head end of the combustion chamber and estimates were obtained of the amount flowing through the recirculation region. Based on this information fuel jets have been designed which it is believed will aid ignition, secure flame stability and improve combustion efficiency. The interaction between fuel jets and the recirculatory air flow has been tentatively investigated on flow visualization tests using jets of coloured water.
