Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow of aqueous solutions of Polyox WSR-301, with concentrations of 1.0 to 200 wppm, past circular cylinders was investigated in the drag-transition region of Reynolds numbers. Drag force, pressure distribution, and separation angle were measured on cylinders with diameters from 1/4 to 1-1/2 inch. Lift and drag forces acting on a NACA-0024 hydrofoil-model were also measured. The polymer additive was found to alter only those force coefficients which have a Reynolds-number transition region. Two distinct types of cylinder drag transition were observed: (1) At high concentrations, transition from sub-critical to a transcritical flow occurred at the same free-stream velocity independent of body diameter; and (2) at low concentrations and/or molecular weights, tripping from a sub-critical to a super-critical flow occurred at a well defined flow condition which was a function of free-stream velocity, body diameter, and turbulent pipe-flow friction reduction. In all cases, transition occurred earlier than that in the pure solvent. The polymer had a de-stabilizing effect on the boundary-layer flow.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications NONLINEAR EVOLUTION EQUATIONS THAT CHANGE TYPE is based on the proceedings of a workshop which was an integral part of the 1988-89 IMA program on NONLINEAR WAVES. The workshop focussed on prob lems of ill-posedness and change of type which arise in modeling flows in porous materials, viscoelastic fluids and solids and phase changes. We thank the Coordinat ing Committee: James Glimm, Daniel Joseph, Barbara Lee Keyfitz, Andrew Majda, Alan Newell, Peter Olver, David Sattinger and David Schaeffer for planning and implementing an exciting and stimulating year-long program. We especially thank the workshop organizers, Barbara Lee Keyfitz and Michael Shearer, for their efforts in bringing together many of the major figures in those research fields in which theories for nonlinear evolution equations that change type are being developed. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, J r. ix PREFACE During the winter and spring quarters of the 1988/89 IMA Program on Non linear Waves, the issue of change of type in nonlinear partial differential equations appeared frequently. Discussion began with the January 1989 workshop on Two Phase Waves in Fluidized Beds, Sedimentation and Granular Flow; some of the papers in the proceedings of that workshop present strategies designed to avoid the appearance of change of type in models for multiphase fluid flow.
Book Synopsis Drag Reduction of Complex Mixtures by : Keizo Watanabe
Download or read book Drag Reduction of Complex Mixtures written by Keizo Watanabe and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drag Reduction of Complex Mixtures discusses the concept of drag reduction phenomena in complex mixtures in internal and external flows that are shown experimentally by dividing flow patterns into three categories. The book is intended to support further experiments or analysis in drag reduction. As accurately modeling flow behavior with drag reduction is always complex, and since drag reducing additives or solid particles are mixed in fluids, this book covers these complex phenomena in a concise, but comprehensive manner. - Comprehensively addresses a range of drag reduction themes involving different kinds of complex mixtures - Provides data to support further experimentation and computer modeling of drag in complex flow - Includes an introduction to the nature and characteristics of different kinds of complex mixtures

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Heat Transfer fills the information gap between regularly scheduled journals and university-level textbooks by providing in-depth review articles over a broader scope than in journals or texts. The articles, which serve as a broad review for experts in the field, will also be of great interest to non-specialists who need to keep up-to-date with the results of the latest research. This serial is essential reading for all mechanical, chemical and industrial engineers working in the field of heat transfer, graduate schools or industry. - Provides an overview of review articles on topics of current interest - Bridges the gap between academic researchers and practitioners in industry - A long-running and prestigious series

Book Synopsis Rheology of Drag Reducing Fluids by : Aroon Shenoy
Download or read book Rheology of Drag Reducing Fluids written by Aroon Shenoy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains theoretical derivations and presents expressions for fluid and convective turbulent flow of mildly elastic fluids in various internal and external flow situations involving different types of geometries, such as the smooth/rough circular pipes, annular ducts, curved tubes, vertical flat plates, and channels. Understanding the methodology of the analyses facilitates appreciation for the rationale used for deriving expressions of parameters relevant to the turbulent flow of mildly elastic fluids. This knowledge serves as a driving force for developing new ideas, investigating new situations, and extending theoretical analyses to other unexplored areas of the rheology of mildly elastic drag reducing fluids. The book suits a range of functions--it can be used to teach elective upper-level undergraduate or graduate courses for chemical engineers, material scientists, mechanical engineers, and polymer scientists; guide researchers unexposed to this alluring and interesting area of drag reduction; and serve as a reference to all who want to explore and expand the areas dealt with in this book.
