Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical study of heat transfer in 90°, constant cross-section curved duct, steady, laminar flow is presented. The work is aimed primarily at characterizing the effects of duct geometry on heat transfer by considering, especially, the role of secondary motions during the developing period of the flow. However, due consideration has also been given to varying initial conditions of velocity and temperature at the entrance section to the duct. In addition, an assessment is made of the relative contributions of individual duct walls to heat transfer in the flow. It is found that, in general, heat transfer increases with Dean number with the largest transfer rates occurring through the duct side walls and outer-curvature wall. Duct geometries with aspect ratio greater or smaller than unity have weaker secondary motions and are less effective for heat transfer. Similarly, plug-flow entrance profiles for velocity retard the development of cross-section flow thus inhibiting a significant contribution to heat transfer. It is concluded that short ducts with strong curvature and intense secondary motions can be as effective for heat transfer as longer ducts which are less strongly curved. Calcuations are based on fully elliptic (in space) forms of the transport equation governing the flow. They are of engineering value and are limited in accuracy only by the degree of computational mesh refinement. A comparison with calculations based on parabolic equations has been made and it is shown how the latter can lead to erroneous results for strongly curved flows.

This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pressure driven, fully-developed turbulent flow of an incompressible viscous fluid in curved ducts of square cross-section is studied numerically by making use of a finite volume method. A nonlinear Kappa - Iota model is used to represent the turbulence. The results for both straight and curved ducts are presented. For the case of fully-developed turbulent flow in straight ducts, the secondary flow is characterized by an eight-vortex structure for which the computed flowfield is shown to be in good agreement with available experimental data. The introduction of moderate curvature is shown to cause a substantial increase in the strength of the secondary flow and to change the secondary flow pattern to either a double-vortex or a four-vortex configuration. This book was released on 1983 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A calculation procedure is developed for the three-dimensional flow in ducts of varying cross section. The procedure is of the fully parabolic variety; i.e., the solution for the whole duct is obtained by a marching scheme that proceeds from the upstream end to the downstream region solving the flow over one cross section at each marching step. The procedure for each cross section is based on the finite element method of Baliga and Patankar. The report describes a major improvement incorporated in the method and some examples of the use of the method. The adaptation of the method for a marching procedure for duct flows is also described. Among the examples presented as test problems are the developing flows: in a square duct, over a rod bundle, in a square diffuser, and in an elliptic duct of varying cross-sectional shape. All numerical solutions are shown to be in satisfactory agreement with exact solutions and/or other available solutions and experimental data. (Author).
Book Synopsis Discrete Cosine and Sine Transforms by : Vladimir Britanak
Download or read book Discrete Cosine and Sine Transforms written by Vladimir Britanak and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-07-28 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is used in many applications by the scientific, engineering and research communities and in data compression in particular. Fast algorithms and applications of the DCT Type II (DCT-II) have become the heart of many established international image/video coding standards. Since then other forms of the DCT and Discrete Sine Transform (DST) have been investigated in detail. This new edition presents the complete set of DCT and DST discrete trigonometric transforms, including their definitions, general mathematical properties, and relations to the optimal Karhunen-Loéve transform (KLT), with the emphasis on fast algorithms (one-dimensional and two-dimensional) and integer approximations of DCTs and DSTs for their efficient implementations in the integer domain. DCTs and DSTs are real-valued transforms that map integer-valued signals to floating-point coefficients. To eliminate the floating-point operations, various methods of integer approximations have been proposed to construct and flexibly generate a family of integer DCT and DST transforms with arbitrary accuracy and performance. The integer DCTs/DSTs with low-cost and low-powered implementation can replace the corresponding real-valued transforms in wireless and satellite communication systems as well as portable computing applications. The book is essentially a detailed excursion on orthogonal/orthonormal DCT and DST matrices, their matrix factorizations and integer aproximations. It is hoped that the book will serve as a valuable reference for industry, academia and research institutes in developing integer DCTs and DSTs as well as an inspiration source for further advanced research. Presentation of the complete set of DCTs and DSTs in context of entire class of discrete unitary sinusoidal transforms: the origin, definitions, general mathematical properties, mutual relationships and relations to the optimal Karhunen-Loéve transform (KLT) Unified treatment with the fast implementations of DCTs and DSTs: the fast rotation-based algorithms derived in the form of recursive sparse matrix factorizations of a transform matrix including one- and two-dimensional cases Detailed presentation of various methods and design approaches to integer approximation of DCTs and DSTs utilizing the basic concepts of linear algebra, matrix theory and matrix computations leading to their efficient multiplierless real-time implementations, or in general reversible integer-to-integer implementations Comprehensive list of additional references reflecting recent/latest developments in the efficient implementations of DCTs and DSTs mainly one-, two-, three- and multi-dimensional fast DCT/DST algorithms including the recent active research topics for the time period from 1990 up to now
