Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 38 (thesis year 1993) a total of 13,787 thesis titles from 22 Canadian and 164 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to develop and demonstrate a general approach for modeling flow and transport in the heterogeneous vadose zone. The approach uses similar media scaling, geostatistics, and conditional simulation methods to estimate soil hydraulic parameters at unsampled locations from field-measured water content data and scale-mean hydraulic parameters determined from available site characterization data. Neural network methods are being developed to estimate soil hydraulic parameters from more easily measured physical property data such as bulk density, organic matter content, and percentages of sand, silt, and clay (or particle-size distributions). Field water content distributions are being estimated using various geophysical methods including neutron moderation, ground-penetrating radar, and electrical resistance tomography. One of the primary goals of this research is to determine relationships between the type of data used in model parameterization, the quantity of data available, the scale of the measurement, and the uncertainty in predictions of flow and transport using these methods. Evaluation of the relationships between available data, scale, and uncertainty are using data from a large-scale, controlled field experiment.

A key issue in choosing a corrective action plan to clean up contaminated sites is the determination of the location, total mass, mobility and travel time to receptors for contaminants moving in the vadose zone. These problems are difficult to solve in a technically defensible and accurate manner because contaminants travel downward intermittently, through narrow pathways, driven by variations in environmental conditions. The primary objective of this project is to determine if and when dynamical chaos theory can be used to investigate infiltration of fluid and contaminant transport in heterogeneous soils and fractured rocks. Book excerpt: Characterizing and quantifying vadose zone parameters and processes are critical for assessing environmental, agricultural, and engineering problems. The shallow subsurface is essential to the geologic and hydrologic cycles because it supports agriculture and ecosystems, influences water resources, and acts as a repository for contaminants. Fluid migration in the vadose zone is dependent on a number of soil characteristics (e.g. soil type and saturation). Quantifying parameters is often the primary goal of hydrological fluid-flow investigations; however, the values calculated can be misrepresentative of the subsurface due to anisotropic features. Hydraulic conductivity (K), the most common quantitative parameter used to describe fluid flow through a porous medium, is complicated in the vadose zone due to spatial and temporal variations at many scales. Many in-situ methods for calculating K (i.e. constant head permeameter method) use surface measurements to quantify subsurface fluid flow. However, the geometry and distribution of the fluid migrating through the subsurface is not determinable from surface measurements, and therefore these techniques may not provide a comprehensive understanding of field-scale fluid flow. In this study, a more robust non-invasive method to image a migrating wetting front in the vadose zone is developed using time-lapse seismic first-arrival tomography (TLSFT). The TLSFT method is based on the concept that variations in seismic compressional wave (P-wave) arrival times are used as a proxy for the relative saturation changes due to an advancing wetting front generated from surface infiltration. Two constant flux applicator infiltration experiments were conducted at the East Tennessee Research and Education Center B-4 plot, while simultaneously collecting TLSFT data to image a migrating wetting front. The TLSFT infiltration method successfully images a migrating wetting front through the vadose zone at different time steps to visually characterize the geometry and distribution of water. Calculated K values using TLSFT infiltration data with an empirical formula are within one to two orders of magnitude of calculated K from an Amoozemeter experiment and known K of the Sequatchie soil series at the B-4 plot. TLSFT calculated ranges of K values are reasonable when considering the spatial and temporal extent of K at a single site.

Book excerpt: Multiscale modeling of subsurface flow and transport is a major area of interest in several applications including petroleum recovery evaluations, nuclear waste disposal systems, CO2 sequestration, groundwater remediation and contaminant plume migration in heterogeneous porous media. During these processes the direct numerical simulation is computationally intensive due to detailed fine scale characterization of the subsurface formations. The main objective of this work is to develop an efficient multiscale framework to reduce usage of fine scale properties associated with advection and diffusion/dispersion, while maintaining accuracy of quantities of interest including mass balance, pressure, velocity, concentration. Another purpose of this work is to investigate the adaptivity criteria in transport and flow problems numerically and/or theoretically based on error estimates. We propose a new adaptive numerical homogenization method using numerical homogenization and Enhanced Velocity Mixed Finite Element Method (EVMFEM). We focus on upscaling the permeability and porosity fields for slightly (nonlinear) compressible single phase Darcy flow and transport problems in heterogeneous porous media. The fine grids are used in the transient regions where spatial changes in transported species concentrations are large while a coarse scale problem is solved in the remaining subdomains. Away from transient region, effective macroscopic properties are obtained using local numerical homogenization. An Enhanced Velocity Mixed Finite Element Method (EVMFEM) as a domain decomposition scheme is used to couple these coarse and fine subdomains [85]. Specifically, homogenization is employed here only when coarse and fine scale problems can be decoupled to extract temporal invariants in the form of effective parameters. In this dissertation, a number of numerical tests are presented for demonstrating the capabilities of this adaptive numerical homogenization approach in upscaling flow and transport in heterogeneous porous medium. We have also derived a priori error estimate for a parabolic problem using Backward Euler and Crank-Nicolson method in time and EVMFEM in space. Next, we have established a posteriori error estimate in EVMFEM setting for incompressible flow problems. We first propose the flux reconstruction for error estimates and prove the upper and lower bound theorems. Next, the explicit residual-based estimates and the recovery-based error estimates with the post-processed pressure are derived theoretically. Numerical experiments are conducted to show that the proposed estimators are effective indicators of local error for incompressible flow problems.

Book excerpt: Migration of contaminants through the complex subsurface at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory's Subsurface Disposal Area was simulated for an ongoing Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability (CERCLA) assessment. A previously existing model for simulating flow and transport through the vadose zone for this site was updated to incorporate information obtained from recent characterization activities. Given the complexity of the subsurface at this site, the simulation results were acknowledged to be uncertain. Rather than attempt parametric approaches to quantify uncertainty, it was recognized that conceptual uncertainty involving the controlling processes was likely dominant. So, the effort focused on modeling different scenarios to evaluate the impact of the conceptual uncertainty.
