Download or read book Wild Capital written by Barbara K. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Wild Capital, Barbara Jones demonstrates that looking at nature through the lens of the marketplace is a surprisingly effective approach to protecting the environment. Showing that policy-makers and developers rarely associate wild places with monetary values, Jones argues that nature can and should be viewed as a capital asset like any other in order for environmental preservation to be a competitive alternative to development. Jones describes how the ecosystem services model, a tool that connects human well-being with the services nature provides, can play a critical role in assigning species and their habitats measurable values. She uses five highly recognizable animal species--moose, manatees, sharks, wolves, and bald eagles--as examples to show how highly valued charismatic fauna can serve as symbolic representations of entire ecosystems at risk. Through an emphasis on branding, incentives, and ecotourism, Jones advocates for channeling the social and economic power of these and other faces of nature to inspire greater environmental awareness and stewardship. Contending that many people don't realize how fiscally pragmatic environmental initiatives can be, Jones is optimistic that by recognizing the costs of habitat destruction and diminished biodiversity, we will make better choices regarding conservation and development. In doing so, we can more readily move toward co-existence with nature and a sustainable future.

Book Synopsis Florida's Wild Back Yard by : Christine Yarbour
Download or read book Florida's Wild Back Yard written by Christine Yarbour and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I like to think of Florida's coastal areas as Florida's front yard. We present this face to the public and pitch endless beaches and fun in the sun. But in my experience, the best of Florida is in its wild back yard. Think of it as our private space for personal enjoyment, just as your back yard is at home. When you're an artist and you enjoy wildlife, you want to share your experiences with upcoming generations. Future young people may never be as fortunate as I have been to see nature's beauty as its source. Florida's Wild Back Yard is for the nature enthusiast of any age. It is my hope you will enjoy information about our many species and their environments. The book includes over 200 illustrations, in pen-and-ink with watercolor, and paintings in acrylic and oil. Over 95 different species are represented. I have interwoven my personal encounter stories with facts about the animals and their behavioral habits. Florida's Wild Back Yard is a true hybrid, a memoir, a collection of short stories, an educational tool, and an artist portfolio. This book is also a platform for my conservation beliefs. If we do nothing at all, some of these animals will disappear forever.

Book excerpt: Fittingly, the Act's chief sponsors were a Senator from Nevada, Key Pittman, and a Representative from Virginia, A. Willis Robertson. The Pittman-Robertson Act, as it came to be called, sped through Congress and was signed into law by President Franklin Roosevelt on September 2, 1937. From a modest beginning, the Pittman-Robertson program has grown with the economy and the human population of our country. By now it has channeled nearly $1.7 billion in Federal excise tax receipts, augmented by some $600 million from the States, into activities to restore wildlife. The projects include State acquisition of acreage needed to bring wildlife back, research into wildlife requirements and problems, active management of habitats, and development of scientific ways to enable wildlife and people to share our land in harmony. The program has strengthened State governments and built wildlife management into a respected profession.
