Book excerpt: First Published in 2011. The early 1970s will be recorded as the years when Florida's environmental crisis, or, more specifically, its land crisis, was proclaimed. Ever since intensive settlement of Florida began a century ago, people have been trying to remake, with increasingly troubling results, a delicate, low-lying peninsula wrought by natural forces over the geological ages. This study looks at the land crisis and the challenge it presents to the state and local governments.

Book Synopsis The Early Conservation Movement in Argentina and the National Park Service by : Arthur Oyola-Yemaiel
Download or read book The Early Conservation Movement in Argentina and the National Park Service written by Arthur Oyola-Yemaiel and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1999-12 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the emergence and development of the conservation movement in Argentina during the twentieth century. I argue that the development of the conservation movement has been linked to shifts in the broader spectrum of Argentina's political arena as well as the international political situation as nations competed for the sovereignty of newly acquired territories after the Indian Wars. This book explores the development of Argentina as a nation in relation to conservation of its natural resources as a counter measure to resource extraction. Thus, I establish the relationship between the need for national sovereignty and socio-economic development via the formulation of nature based tourism industry. This strategy was developed by Excequiel Bustillo and spearheaded by the formation of National Park System. The environmental movement in Argentina has been based on the principles of utilitarianism, and the National Park System of Argentina was instrumental in establishing hegemonic national identity and sovereignty in Patagonia. The National Park System institutionalized and for many years was the leading force behind conservation of Argentina's natural resources, and it fostered social and economic development of remote areas through nature based tourism practices.
Book Synopsis Government Budget Forecasting by : Jinping Sun
Download or read book Government Budget Forecasting written by Jinping Sun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revenue and expenditure forecasting plays an important role in public budgeting and financial management, particularly during times of financial constraint, when citizens impose greater accountability upon government to use taxpayer dollars more efficiently. Despite its significance, revenue and expenditure forecasting is often overlooked in the budget process, and there is an imbalance between practice and research in this area. Based on the collaboration of budget scholars and practitioners, Government Budget Forecasting fulfills two purposes: Enhances the understanding of revenue and expenditure estimation both theoretically and practically Stimulates dialogue and debate among practitioners and academicians to identify good forecast practices as well as areas for improvement Divided into four parts, this comprehensive reference first examines forecast practices at the federal, state, and local levels, drawing on case studies that include California, Texas, and Louisiana. It then explores consensus systems and risk assessment, considering political factors and the costs of forecast errors. The text concludes with a call to transparency and guidance from a code of ethics, and a look at forecasting practices in emerging countries.

Book Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of Government Budget Forecasting by : Daniel Williams
Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Government Budget Forecasting written by Daniel Williams and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook is a comprehensive anthology of up-to-date chapters contributed by current researchers in budget forecasting. Editors Daniel Williams and Thad Calabrese had previously found substantial deficiencies in public budgeting forecast literature with current research failing to address such matters as practices related to forecasting expenditure factors, the consequences of forecast bias, or empirical examination of the effectiveness of many deterministic methods actually used by many governments. This volume comprehensively addresses the state of knowledge about budget forecasting for practitioners, academics, and students and serves as a comprehensive resource for instruction alongside serving as a reference book for those engaged in budget forecasting practice.

Book Synopsis Informed Legislatures by : Megan Jones
Download or read book Informed Legislatures written by Megan Jones and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed Legislatures offers the first comprehensive examination of technical information and decisionmaking in state legislatures and recommends ways to improve science and technology support to legislatures through staff, state universities, and other groups. Megan Jones, David H. Guston, and Lewis M. Branscomb report on fieldwork from eleven state legislatures. While partisan analysis is necessary in the legislative process, non-partisan sources are vital to help legislatures triangulate among special interests. The book argues that maintaining internal expertise is effective in the ongoing struggle of state legislatures to be independent of governors and lobbyists. Practioners interested in state legislatures, professionals in state and local government, lobbyists, state legislators and staff, public university administratives and faculty, and scholars who focus on the role of scientific and technical information in political institutions will find Informed Legislatures to be an invaluable resource.
