Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few branches of the biological sciences have developed to such an extent as has ecology in the recent decades. The successful development of this science is directly related to need to create a sound scientific basis by which we can control our diminishing natural resources and integrate this with the control of biological systems of the component species. Studies on the bioenergetics of ecosystems, as well as on the home ostatic mechanisms functioning at the populations and biocenoses levels are of great importance in this respect. The results of these studies are very significant in forestry management which deals with multiannual tree communities - forest stands. It is particularly important in this of the necessity for the possible respect for economic planning, in view prolonged maintenance of forest biocenoses as stable systems. Neither in the present nor in the immediate future can be protection of forest ecosystems consisting of natural plant and animal communities be achieved by the cultivation of resistant forms or the intensification of chemical intervention.

Book excerpt: When Rolf Dahlgren and I embarked on preparing this book series, Rolf took prime responsibility for monocotyledons, which had interested him for a long time. After finishing his comparative study and family classification of the monocots, he devoted much energy to the acquisition and editing of family treatments for the present series. After his untimely death, Peter Goldblatt, who had worked with him, continued to handle further incoming monocot manuscripts until, in the early 1990s, his other obligations no longer allowed him to continue. At that time, some 30 manuscripts in various states of perfection had accumulated, which seemed to form a solid basis for a speedy completion of the FGVP monocots; with the exception of the grasses and orchids which would appear in separate volumes. I felt a strong obligation to do everything to help in publishing the manuscripts that had been put into our hands. I finally decided to take charge of them personally, although during my life as a botainst I had never seriously been interested in monocots.

Book excerpt: The natural beauty of flowers has been celebrated by writers, poets and artists for hundreds of years. In this collection of exquisite images by award-winning photographer Clive Nichols, flowers are shown in all their glory, from the delicately flared petals of a crocus to the close-packed velvety whorls of a red rose; and from the intricate markings of an orchid to the kaleidoscope-like symmetry of wild borage. In these photographs, where every bloom is treated as a work of art, the tiniest details are brought into wonderful clarity, displaying an astonishing variety of structure, texture and colour. Concise, insightful texts by Nol Kingsbury complement the images, providing botanical, historical and ecological information on each flower. This beautiful yet informative book is ideal for lovers of photography and of the natural world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a monograph of the genus Diplusodon (Lythraceae), written by the world authority on this plant group. Diplusodon is a monophyletic genus of shrubs and subshrubs, with showy, 6-merous, actinomorphic flowers, and floral tubes on which the sepals alternate with conspicuous epicalyx segments. The capsular fruit contains winged seeds and, uniquely for the family, is divided by a bipartite placenta with two semi-lunate septa. Diplusodon is the second largest genus in the Lythraceae and occurs mostly in the Cerrado Biome, the floristically diverse savannah that covers more than two million km2 of the Central Brazilian Plateau, extending west into Bolivia, south to Paraguay and east to the Caatinga. A total of 104 species and eight varieties are recognized in the genus, for which 46 lectotypes, one neotype, one new status and one new combination are designated, nine new species are described, and 15 taxa are placed in synonymy. New information on floral and vegetative morphology, pollen, cytology, chemistry, floral biology, and habitat are provided for the genus. In addition, keys to the species are accompanied by descriptions, illustrations, distribution maps, and assignment of conservation status.

Through his prolific pen, poignant observations, and powerful insights he significantly influenced mission research and activity in the period of the 1960s to 1980s. This was particularly facilitated through his research, writing, and teaching at the Institute of Church Growth, Fuller Theological Seminary School of World Mission, and his inaugural editorship of the American Society of Missiology's journal, Missiology: An International Review. Yet for those who did not know Tippett's material well, the very specific nature of his research and writing limited the influence of his insights. For example, without already knowing the pertinent content, why would a missionary to Thailand think of reading Tippett's Solomon Islands Christianity? However, according to Doug Priest, editor of a number of Tippett's posthumous publications, this volume has "done what even Tippett himself did not do, and that is to capture the key features of his missiology in one volume." So Guiding Light functions as an in-depth overview of "The Essential Alan Tippett." I can attest that the nature of Tippett's material continued to inform and inspire me throughout the eleven years of the research and writing of this study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conclusion to the centuries-old Chinese epic in a translation that’s “a joy to read . . . [a] fantastic tale of adventure” (Nathan Slavin, University of Pennsylvania). A monk contends with demons, spirits, and other troubles as he travels to India in search of Buddhist scriptures in this classic Chinese fantasy adventure. Written in the sixteenth century, The Journey to the West is a remarkable historical saga that follows the fourteen-year pilgrimage of the monk Xuanzang, one of China’s most famous religious heroes, and his four supernatural disciples, in search of Buddhist scriptures. Throughout his journey, Xuanzang fights demons who wish to eat him, communes with spirits, and traverses a land riddled with a multitude of obstacles, both real and fantastical. An adventure rich with danger and excitement, this seminal work of the Chinese literary canon is by turns allegory, satire, and fantasy. Anthony C. Yu’s translation, initially published in 1983, introduced English-speaking audiences to the classic saga in its entirety for the first time. In this new edition of one of the great works of Chinese literature, Yu has made his translations even more accurate and accessible with new explanatory notes, additions to the introduction, and modernized transliterations using the now-standard Hanyu Pinyin romanization system. Volume 4 of 4 “A complete, faithful, and fully delightful translation of China’s most beloved novel.” —The Hudson Review “Does full justice to the adventure, lyricism and buffoonery [yet] is completely sensitive to the spiritual content of the text as well.” —The New York Times Book Review “Beautiful . . . A monumental achievement that takes the reader to the heart of one of the most important narratives in the Chinese tradition. The introduction is a model of erudition and incisive analysis. It is also the most thorough and insightful discussion of the sources and interpretations of The Journey to the West to date. Readers will enjoy the elucidation of allegorical possibilities and scholarly arguments both in the introduction and in the annotations. The adoption of Pinyin romanization will make this much more convenient for classroom use as a teaching edition.” —Waiyee Li, Harvard University “One of the great works of world religious literature.” —Robert Company, Vanderbilt University

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ambitious work of political and intellectual history, Charles Hartman surveys the major sources that survive as vestiges of the official dynastic historiography of the Chinese Song dynasty (960–1279). Analyzing the narratives that emerge from these sources as products of Song political discourse, Hartman offers a thorough introduction to the texts and the political circumstances surrounding their compilation. Distilling from these sources a 'grand allegory of Song history', he argues that the narratives embedded within reflect tension between a Confucian model of political institutionalism and the Song court's preference for a non-sectarian, technocratic model. Fundamentally rethinking the corpus of texts that have formed the basis of our understanding of the Song and of imperial China more broadly, this far-reaching account of historiographical process and knowledge production illuminates the relationship between official history writing and political struggle in China.
