Book Synopsis Early Evolution of Flowers by : Peter K. Endress
Download or read book Early Evolution of Flowers written by Peter K. Endress and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent discovery of a large number of excellently preserved fossil flowers, studied with new techniques, and the comparative study of the flowers of extant basal clades of the angiosperms revolutionized the conception of early flower evolution. This volume brings together contributions of 17 palaeo- and neobotanists including critical reviews on the origin of flowers and the homologies of angiosperm floral organs, on the relationships of floral traits of magnoliids to those of lower eudicots (ranunculids, hamamelidids, dilleniids) and monocots, and articles on particular new Cretaceous fossils and new results on extant groups. These studies also influence the notion of early angiosperm evolution and of the macrosystematics of flowering plants.

Book Synopsis Evolutionary Trends in Flowering Plants by : Armen Leonovich Takhtadzhi͡an
Download or read book Evolutionary Trends in Flowering Plants written by Armen Leonovich Takhtadzhi͡an and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Takhtajan, one of the foremost authorities on flowering plant evolution, has brought together from the literature and his own studies interpretations of the origin and evolution of various vegetative and reproductive parts of flowering plants. Starting with growth habit, he continues through leaf and stem structure, including the origin of vessels, sieve tubes, and rays, to flowers. After tracing the possible origin of the flower, he discusses in detail the sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels, accounting for their variations in number of parts, fusion, position, and structure. The evolution and origin of the micro- and megagametophytes and the development of triple fusion are considered. The book ends with the developmental sequence of the fruit and seed types. Each chapter has its own extensive bibliography. Takhtajan has produced a book that will be essential in the library of any college where plant evolution is considered.-C. T. Book Synopsis Ranunculales Medicinal Plants by : Da-Cheng Hao
Download or read book Ranunculales Medicinal Plants written by Da-Cheng Hao and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ranunculales Medicinal Plants: Biodiversity, Chemodiversity and Pharmacotherapy comprehensively covers this order of flowering plants, detailing the phytochemistry, chemotaxonomy, molecular biology, and phylogeny of selected medicinal plants families and genera and their relevance to drug efficacy. The book carries out an exhaustive survey of the literature in order to characterize global trends in the application of flexible technologies. The interrelationship between Chinese species, and between Chinese and non-Chinese species, is inferred through molecular phylogeny and based on nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequencing. The book discusses the conflict between chemotaxonomy and molecular phylogeny in the context of drug discovery and development. Users will find invaluable and holistic coverage on the study of Ranunculales that will make this the go-to pharmaceutical resource. Describes current perceptions of biodiversity and chemodiversity of Ranunculales Explains how the conceptual framework of plant pharmacophylogeny benefits the sustainable exploitation of Ranunculales Details how Ranunculales medicinal plants work from the chemical level upward Covers how the polypharmacology of Ranunculales compounds might inspire new chemical entity design and development for improved treatment outcomes
Download or read book Floral Biology written by David G. Lloyd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in floral biology are largely concerned with how flowers function to promote pollination and mating. The role of pollination in governing mating patterns in plant populations inextricably links the evolution of pollination and mating systems. Despite the close functional link between pollination and mating, research conducted for most of this century on these two fundamental aspects of plant reproduction has taken quite separate courses. This has resulted in suprisingly little cross-fertilization between the fields of pollination biology on the one hand and plant mating-system studies on the other. The separation of the two areas has largely resulted from the different backgrounds and approaches adopted by workers in these fields. Most pollination studies have been ecological in nature with a strong emphasis on field research and until recently few workers considered how the mechanics of pollen dispersal might influence mating patterns and individual plant fitness. In contrast, work on plant mating patterns has often been conducted in an ecological vacuum largely devoid of information on the environmental and demographic context in which mating occurs. Mating-system research has been dominated by population genetic and theoretical perspectives with surprisingly little consideration given to the proximate ecological factors responsible for causing a particular pattern of mating to occur.

Download or read book Anatomy of Flowering Plants written by Paula J. Rudall and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 2007 third edition of her successful textbook, Paula Rudall provides a comprehensive yet succinct introduction to the anatomy of flowering plants. Thoroughly revised and updated throughout, the book covers all aspects of comparative plant structure and development, arranged in a series of chapters on the stem, root, leaf, flower, seed and fruit. Internal structures are described using magnification aids from the simple hand-lens to the electron microscope. Numerous references to recent topical literature are included, and new illustrations reflect a wide range of flowering plant species. The phylogenetic context of plant names has also been updated as a result of improved understanding of the relationships among flowering plants. This clearly written text is ideal for students studying a wide range of courses in botany and plant science, and is also an excellent resource for professional and amateur horticulturists.
