Speaking of anomalies, why is Gin so disappointed that Felix isn't a match for her in the dating app she's designing with local gamers? Book excerpt: Art's aspirations are upended following the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor. Branded as the enemy within his own country, Art is ripped away from his life in West Seattle, forced to confront the harsh reality of internment camps. In a quest to prove his patriotism and loyalty, Art enlists in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team-a unit of all Japanese American soldiers. In the quaint village of Écueillé, Yvette's peaceful existence is shattered by the Nazi occupation and she witnesses firsthand the cruelty and injustices inflicted upon her neighbors. Finding herself at the crossroads of survival and resistance, Yvette is thrust into a role far beyond her years. After the war, Art returns to the United States, burdened by the memories of combat and his family's internment. Despite his decorated service, he struggles to reintegrate into a society that still views him through a lens of suspicion and prejudice. Meanwhile, in liberated France, Yvette grapples with the scars left by the occupation and the challenge of rebuilding in a country forever changed by war. When Art joins the Air Force Reserves, he is immediately deployed to France. In Chateauroux, a chance encounter with Yvette sparks an unexpected moment of profound understanding, forging a life-long connection amidst the lingering echoes of war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bud Anderson is a flyers flyer. The Californians enduring love of flying began in the 1920s with the planes that flew over his fathers farm. In January 1942, he entered the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program. Later after he received his wings and flew P-39s, he was chosen as one of the original flight leaders of the new 357th Fighter Group. Equipped with the new and deadly P-51 Mustang, the group shot down five enemy aircraft for each one it lost while escorting bombers to targets deep inside Germany. But the price was high. Half of its pilots were killed or imprisoned, including some of Buds closest friends. In February 1944, Bud Anderson, entered the uncertain, exhilarating, and deadly world of aerial combat. He flew two tours of combat against the Luftwaffe in less than a year. In battles sometimes involving hundreds of airplanes, he ranked among the groups leading aces with 16 aerial victories. He flew 116 missions in his old crow without ever being hit by enemy aircraft or turning back for any reason, despite one life or death confrontation after another. His friend Chuck Yeager, who flew with Anderson in the 357th, says, In an airplane, the guy was a mongoosethe best fighter pilot I ever saw. Buds years as a test pilot were at least as risky. In one bizarre experiment, he repeatedly linked up in midair with a B-29 bomber, wingtip to wingtip. In other tests, he flew a jet fighter that was launched and retrieved from a giant B-36 bomber. As in combat, he lost many friends flying tests such as these. Bud commanded a squadron of F-86 jet fighters in postwar Korea, and a wing of F-105s on Okinawa during the mid-1960s. In 1970 at age 48, he flew combat strikes as a wing commander against communist supply lines. To Fly and Fight is about flying, plain and simple: the joys and dangers and the very special skills it demands. Touching, thoughtful, and dead honest, it is the story of a boy who grew up living his dream.

The story begins when Blackie is pushed from the crow's nest by his older brother. During his fall, Blackie sees a boy named Leo, who comes to his aid, as the bird lies injured at the foot of a tall pine. Leo and Blackie instantly bond, sharing the gift of telepathy, which enables them to communicate effortlessly without spoken words. Blackie eventually learns to fly with Leo's assistance. Blackie migrates to Florida with all the other crows each winter, though he and Leo share their adventures telepathically. In the third year of his migration, Blackie returns with a mate. Leo also grows up, goes to Dartmouth College and falls in love. Blackie shares with Leo the stories he hears of crow killings in a small college town named Faithful, New Hampshire. The president of Right College hates crows and attempts to eradicate them. Besides killing crows, the president is also secretly training a militia for bigger kills. Leo and Blackie travel to Hofstadter's Militia Training Center, in Freedom, N. H., where they meet other telepaths. Blackie's wise leadership creates a telephathic force ready to take on the militia. This supernatural novel shows how man and other species can work together and share an enduring bond." --Back cover.

Book excerpt: Though not generally perceived as graceful, crows are remarkably so—a single curve undulates from the tip of the bird’s beak to the end of its tail. They take flight almost without effort, flapping their wings easily and ascending into the air like spirits. Crow by Boria Sax is a celebration of the crow and its relatives in myth, literature, and life. Sax takes readers into the history of crows, detailing how in a range of cultures, from the Chinese to the Hopi Indians, crows are bearers of prophecy. For example, thanks in part to the birds’ courtship rituals, Greeks invoked crows as symbols of conjugal love. From the raven sent out by Noah to the corvid deities of the Eskimo, from Taoist legends to Victorian novels and contemporary films, Sax’s book ranges across history and culture and will interest anyone who has ever been intrigued, puzzled, annoyed, or charmed by these wonderfully intelligent birds.
