Book excerpt: Summary: Skin and structural temperatures have been obtained on the X-1B and X-1E research airplanes under transient aerodynamic heating conditions at speeds up to Mach numbers near 2.0. Extensive temperature measurements were obtained throughout the X-1B airplane, and temperature distributions are shown on the nose cone, the wing, and the vertical tail. Temperatures for the X-1E wing leading edge and internal wing structure were compared with similar data for the X-1B. No critical skin and structural temperatures were obtained on the two airplanes over the range of these tests. Simplified calculations of the skin temperatures in the laminar-flow regions of the nose cone and the leading edges agreed favorably with the general trends in the measured data. The flat-plate skin-temperature calculations in the turbulent-flow regions agreed favorably with the measured data on the nose cone and at the midsemispan station of the wing but overestimated the vertical-tail skin temperatures and also the upper wing skin temperature near the wing tip. The relatively low values of the upper skin temperatures that were measured at the wing tip were believed to be caused by separated-flow effects in this region.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a method that can calculate transient aerodynamic heating and transient surface temperatures at supersonic and hypersonic speeds. This method can rapidly calculate temperature and heating rate time-histories for complete flight trajectories. Semi-empirical theories are used to calculate laminar and turbulent heat transfer coefficients and a procedure for estimating boundary-layer transition is included. Results from this method are compared with flight data from the X-15 research vehicle, YF-12 airplane, and the Space Shuttle Orbiter. These comparisons show that the calculated values are in good agreement with the measured flight data.

These data comprise supersonic Mach number, altitude and recorded and predicted temperatures at various wing and fuselage stations. Data presentation is in the form of curves, plots and tables with pertinent descriptive information. These findings are presented to provide a basis for extending the state-of-the-art in structural design criteria for current and future flight vehicles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SR-71 test bed aircraft is shown to be a unique platform to flight-test large experiments to supersonic Mach numbers. The test bed hardware mounted on the SR-71 upper fuselage is described. This test bed hardware is composed of a fairing structure called the "canoe" and a large "reflection plane" flat plate for mounting experiments. Total experiment weights, including the canoe and reflection plane, as heavy as 14,500 lb can be mounted on the aircraft and flight-tested to speeds as fast as Mach 3.2 and altitudes as high as 80,000 ft. A brief description of the SR-71 aircraft is given, including details of the structural modifications to the fuselage, modifications to the J58 engines to provide increased thrust, and the addition of a research instrumentation system. Information is presented based on flight data that describes the SR-71 test bed aerodynamics, stability and control, structural and thermal loads, the canoe internal environment, and reflection plane flow quality. Guidelines for designing SR-71 test bed experiments are also provided.

Book excerpt: The thermal analysis is presented of a portion of the external surface thermal protection system and load bearing structure of a hypersonic vehicle, whose mission consists of a climb-out to 100,000 feet, cruise at Mach 6, descent, and a final phase, termed turn around, which includes landing rollout, refueling and maintenance. Temperature-dependent thermo-physical properties are utilized and compared to results obtained for constant thermo-physical properties.

This book was released on 1947 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate method for determining the convective cooling requirement in the laminar-boundary-layer region of a body of revolution in high-speed flight was developed and applied to an example body. The cooling requirement for the example body was determined as a function of Mach number, altitude, size, and a surface-temperature parameter. The maximum value of Mach number considered was 3.0 and the altitudes considered were those within the lower constant-temperature region of the atmosphere (40,000 to 120,000 ft). The extent of the laminar boundary layer was determined approximately at each condition as a function of the variables considered.

This book was released on 1961 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat-transfer coefficients in the form of Stanton number and boundary-layer transition data were obtained from a free-flight test of a 100-inch-long 10° total-angle cone with a 1/16-inch tip radius which penetrated deep into the region of infinite stability of laminar boundary layer over a range of wall-to-local-stream temperature radius and for local Mach numbers from 1.8 to 3.5. Experimental heat-transfer coefficients, obtained at Reynolds numbers up to 160 x 106, were in general somewhat higher than theoretical values. A maximum Reynolds number of transition of only 33 x 106 was obtained. Contrary to theoretical and some other experimental investigations, the transition Reynolds number initially increased while the wall temperature ratio increased at relatively constant Mach number. Further increases in wall temperature ratio were accompanied by a decrease in transition Reynolds number. Increasing transition Reynolds number with increasing Mach number was also indicated at a relatively constant wall temperature ratio.
