Download or read book Concrete for the Modern Age Developments in materials and processes written by Dr Atef Badr and published by Whittles Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 1057 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a wide-ranging review of the latest developments in concrete technology that have been largely missing from the global conference circuit. It the first major international event under the auspices of the Institute of Concrete Technology (ICT) and is appropriately located in the Middle East at the heart of a construction boom. Themes covered include admixture technology, durability, mix design, special cements and supplementary materials, reinforced concrete and sustainability. The 39 papers provide interesting theory and applicable practice blended with research findings – from the application of 3D printing to performance-based specifications and the role of concrete in the development of Oman – to produce a volume of value to many engineers and technologists. Founded in 1972, The Institute of Concrete Technology (ICT)’s mission is to preserve and promote concrete technology as a recognised engineering discipline and consolidate the professional status of practising concrete technologists worldwide. It is the concrete sector’s professional development body, operating internationally, with some 500 members in more than 30 countries. It is an awarding body for qualifications in concrete technology and a facilitator of continuing professional development (CPD) and networking opportunities. Our partner in this conference, The Military Technical College in Muscat, Oman, was established with the intent of becoming a Center of Excellence in engineering education. Located in one purpose-built, state-of-the-art, well-resourced center, the intent is that MTC will be amongst the world's best in the field of military and applied non-military technological education and training providers in the world.

Book Synopsis High Performance Concretes by : Paul Zia
Download or read book High Performance Concretes written by Paul Zia and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This state-of-the-art report summarizes the results of an extensive search and review of available literature on the mechanical properties of concrete, with particular reference to high performance concrete for highway applications. Included in the review and discussion are the behavior of plastic concrete as well as the strength and deformation characteristics of hardened concrete. Both short-term and long-term effects are considered. Based on the review of the available information, research needs are identified. It is concluded that much research is needed to develop data on the strength and durability properties of concrete which develops high strength, particularly very early strength.
Book Synopsis Fatigue of Concrete Beams and Slabs by : Jeff Roesler
Download or read book Fatigue of Concrete Beams and Slabs written by Jeff Roesler and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: lDOT Mechanistic Based Design Procedure was used to evaluate the performance of concrete pavements being tested in Mn/ROAD. To accurately evaluate the probably performance of the pavements, fatigue characteristics of concrete used in Mn/ROAD had to be determined. Fatigue tests were run on simply supported beams, fully supported beams and fully supported slabs to evaluate the fatigue behavior of concrete using the different types of specimens. Results show that when interpreted in the conventional manner using Whaler diagram, the fatigue responses were the same with all three specimen types. However, the strength of the concrete at first crack was about 30 percent higher in the fully supported slabs than for the simply supported beams. The slab specimens also showed a much longer performance life between first crack and full cracking than the beam specimens. These results indicate a significantly longer fatigue life for the slabs than predicted using the strength data from simple beams. When the findings were applied to the concrete pavements in Mn/ROAD, using the lDOT Mechanistic Based Design Algorithms, the conclusion was that the pavements should not have failed. Results from Mn/ROAD show no evidence of structural distress at this time, thus partially validating the lDOT Mechanistic Based Design Procedure.

Book Synopsis Understanding the Tensile Properties of Concrete by : Jaap Weerheijm
Download or read book Understanding the Tensile Properties of Concrete written by Jaap Weerheijm and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The response of concrete under tensile loading is crucial for most applications because concrete is much weaker in tension than in compression. Understanding the response mechanisms of concrete under tensile conditions is therefore key to understanding and using concrete in structural applications. Understanding the Tensile Properties of Concrete Second Edition summarises key recent research in this important subject area. After an introduction to concrete, the book is divided into two parts: part one on static response and part two on dynamic response. Part one starts with a summary chapter on the most important parameters that affect the tensile response of concrete. Chapters show how multi scale modelling is used to relate concrete composition to tensile properties. Part two focuses on dynamic response and starts with an introduction to the different regimes of dynamic loading, ranging from the low frequency loading by wind or earthquakes up to the extreme dynamic conditions due to explosions and ballistic impacts. Following chapters review dynamic testing techniques and devices that deal with the various regimes of dynamic loading. Later chapters highlight the dynamic behaviour of concrete from different viewpoints, and the book ends with a chapter on practical examples of how detailed knowledge on tensile properties is used by engineers in structural applications. Drawing on the work of some of the leading experts in the field, the book is fully updated and will be a valuable reference for civil and structural engineers as well as those researching this important material. - Presents recent research in the areas of understanding the response mechanisms of concrete under tensile conditions - Provides a summary of the most important parameters that affect the tensile response of concrete and shows how multi scale modeling is used to relate concrete composition to tensile properties - Highlights the dynamic behavior of concrete from different viewpoints and provides practical examples of how detailed knowledge on tensile properties is used by engineers in structural applications - Presents recent advancements in tensile strength determination under static and dynamic loading conditions for concrete structures - Covers HSFRC and FRHSC - Presents new work on non-local models and damage modeling, the dynamic increase factor for tensile strength, fracture energy and anchors, and slop stabilization

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years, the Transport and Road Research Laboratory has carried out a co-ordinated programme of fatigue testing, including work on the fatigue performance of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete beams. The research has led to a better understanding of the fatigue behaviour of plain concrete, the various types of reinforcing bars in air and concrete, continuous welded, lapped and coupled bars, and the effects of corrosion. The work of TRRL and many other organizations is reviewed and a summary of current design rules with recommendations for assessing the fatigue life of new structures in service is given.
Book Synopsis Lifetime-Oriented Structural Design Concepts by : Friedhelm Stangenberg
Download or read book Lifetime-Oriented Structural Design Concepts written by Friedhelm Stangenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-26 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety and reliability are important for the whole expected service duration of an engineering structure. Therefore, prognostical solutions for different building types are needed and uncertainties have to be handled. Life-cycle strategies to control future structural degradations by concepts of appropriate design have to be developed, in case including means of inspection, maintenance, and repair. Aspects of costs and sustainability also matter. The Cooperative Research Center for Lifetime-Oriented Design Concepts (SFB 398) at Ruhr University in Bochum combines the wide range of scientific topics between structural engineering, structural and soil mechanics and material sciences regarding structural lifetime management in this present extraordinary monolithic format. The characterization and modeling of lifetime-related external actions of multiple origin are presented in this book as well as the physical description, the modeling and the validation of material degradation. Adaptive numerical methods and simulation techniques are provided for the lifetime-oriented design concepts to forecast material and structural degradation. Stochastic aspects, mathematical optimization methods and interactions between various influences are included. Thus, a solid basis is provided for future practical use and also for standardization of structural design with respect to lifetime-prediction.
