Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Gang der Untersuchung: Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich kritisch mit rechtlichen, wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und gesellschaftlichen Aspekten der Arbeitszeitgestaltung auseinander. Diese differenzierte Betrachtung soll schließlich die Zusammenhänge untereinander verdeutlichen, damit erkennbar wird, dass Bemühungen und um zeitgemäße Lösungen nicht zum Stillstand kommen dürfen. Eingangs beschreibt ein kurzer historischer Abriss die Entwicklung der Arbeitszeit und ihre speziell auf Österreich bezogene Darstellung seit Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Schon im geschichtlichen Verlauf ist ein stetiger Trend zur Arbeitszeitverkürzung feststellbar. Kapitel 3 behandelt anschließend ausgewählter Bereiche aus den derzeit gültigen arbeitszeitgesetzlichen Bestimmungen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Darstellung gesetzlicher Bestimmungen bezüglich Normalarbeitszeit, Überstundenarbeit und der zulässigen Höchstarbeitszeit. Darüber hinaus wird auf Möglichkeiten der vom Normalfall abweichenden Arbeitszeitgestaltung eingegangen. Vergleichend zu Kapitel 3, in der gewissermaßen eine SOLL-Analyse vorgenommen wurde, untersucht Kapitel 4 in einer IST-Analyse die tatsächliche Verteilung Arbeitszeit innerhalb der österreichischen Bevölkerung. Interessant in diesem Zusammenhang ist vor allem wieweit bei den unselbständig Beschäftigten die tatsächlich geleistete Arbeitszeit von der Normalarbeitszeit abweicht bzw. wie lange eine durchschnittlichen Arbeitswoche ausfällt. Daraus ergibt sich die Frage nach der regelmäßigen Überstundenleistung, die berufs- und geschlechtsspezifisch analysiert wird. Die Darstellung der Sonderformen der Arbeitszeit soll aufzeigen, inwiefern von Regelarbeitszeit der österreichischen Beschäftigten die Rede sein kann. Die neue Bedeutung der Arbeitszeitsituation geht im Rahmen meiner Arbeit von dieser Situationsanalyse aus und sieht die Ursache des Interessenkonfliktes zwischen Arbeitgeber- und ArbeitnehmerInnen vor allem im Wertewandel in der Arbeitswelt. Kapitel 4 setzt sich ausführlich mit dieser konfliktgefährdenden Situation auseinander. Um mögliche Konflikte zwischen Arbeitgeber- und ArbeitnehmerInnen zu vermeiden, sollte sinnvolle Arbeitszeitgestaltung die Schaffung eines Interessenausgleichs verfolgen. Dabei geht es nicht nur um Fragen der Arbeitszeitverkürzung, sondern auch vermehrt um Aspekte einer flexiblen Gestaltung von Lage und Dauer der Arbeitszeit. Ist dies geschehen, werden die verschiedenen Formen der Arbeitszeitverkürzung und deren Unterschiede in Bezug auf eine Beschäftigungswirkung skizziert, worauf eine differenzierte Auseinandersetzung mit der Ausgangsfrage folgt. Innerhalb dieser Diskussion sollen verschiedene Für- und Gegenargumente dazu führen ein umfassendes Bild der möglichen Folgen einer Arbeitszeitverkürzung zu gewinnen und die Frage eines Beschäftigungspotentials zu klären. Im letzten Schritt soll ein Fazit die gesammelten Erkenntnisse zusammentragen und auswerten.

Zudem ist es einer Mehrzahl der Arbeitnehmerinnen und Arbeitnehmer heutzutage nicht mehr ausschließlich wichtig, dass er/sie arbeitet, sondern wie man im Endeffekt davon lebt. Eine Flexibilisierung der Arbeitszeit kann einem Unternehmen erhebliche Wettbewerbsvorteile verschaffen. Ferner lässt sich so der mittlerweile von vielen geforderte Einklang von Privat- und Berufsleben verwirklichen. Das nachfolgende Seminar soll einen ersten Eindruck darüber geben, welche Modelle der Arbeitszeitflexibilisierung existieren und welche Auswirkungen diese auf die beteiligten Parteien haben.

Book excerpt: The night represents almost universally a special, liminal or "out of the ordinary" temporal zone with its own meanings, possibilities and dangers, and political, cultural, religious and social implications. Only in the modern era was the night systematically "colonised" and nocturnal activity "normalised," in terms of (industrial) labour and production processes. Although the globalised 24/7 economy is usually seen as the outcome of capitalist modernisation, development and expansion starting in the late nineteenth century, other consecutive and more recent political and economic systems adopted perpetual production systems as well, extending work into the night and forcing workers to work the "night shift," normalising it as part of an alternative non-capitalist modernity. This volume draws attention to the extended work hours and night shift work, which have remained underexplored in the history of labour and the social science literature. By describing and comparing various political and economic "regimes," it argues that, from the viewpoint of global labour history, night labour and the spread of 24/7 production and services should not be seen, only and exclusively, as an epiphenomenon of capitalist production, but rather as one of the outcomes of industrial modernity.
