The problem with TBT and its cause was first recognized in France, then in the United Kingdom and the United States of America; and in these and other countries legislation is now in place (see Abel, Chapter 2; Champ and Wade, Chapter 3), but in many countries the hazard is only now being identified. This volume has the important function of making available to all a summary of the results of work on TBT and the main conclusions. It will help to minimize the duplication of research and speed the introduction of legislation around the world to control organotin pollution. It is the more valuable because research on TBT has often been published in less accessible journals and symposium proceedings. This volume brings together accounts of these findings by the major contributors to the TBT story, providing the most comprehensive account to date. The TBT problem has proved to be instructive in a number of different ways beyond the bounds of the specific issue (Stebbing, 1985). Most important is that TBT can be seen as a challenge to monitoring systems for nearshore waters, by which it can be judged how effective monitoring has been in fulfilling its purpose, and what improvements should be made. Most instructive was the time it took to bring TBT under control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of surface coatings is now so extensive, and is developing so rapidly, that no individual person could be expected to master it in its entirety. Hence, the days have gone when a lone author could compile a comprehensive treatise on the topic without overlooking many of the most significant developments. Yet the very growth and diversity of surface coatings make it essential that workers in the field should have access to up-to-date and authoritative reviews. It is to satisfy this need that we have assembled our team of authors, each of whom is an expert in his or her branch of the subject, and is well able to as'sess w:hat is most significant and exciting within that branch. They h,ave b~en encouraged to develop their themes in what they have felt to be the most appropriate way, with minimal editorial interference from us. We believe that the results of their labours will be of benefit to those engaged not only in basic research, but also to those working ip product development and in testing and evaluation of coatings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and toxic elements, such as dioxins, flame retardants, lead and mercury, are substances of major concern for the food industry, the regulator and the public. They persist in the environment, accumulate in food chains and may adversely affect human health if ingested over certain levels or with prolonged exposure. Persistent organic pollutants and toxic metals in foods explores the scientific and regulatory challenges of ensuring that our food is safe to eat. Part one provides an overview of regulatory efforts to screen, monitor and control persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals in foods and includes case studies detailing regulatory responses to food contamination incidents. Part two moves on to highlight particular POPs, toxic metals and metalloids in foods, including dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), mercury, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and phthalates. Persistent organic pollutants and toxic metals in foods is a standard reference for those in the food industry responsible for food safety, laboratories testing for food chemical safety, regulatory authorities responsible for ensuring the safety of food, and researchers in industry and academia interested in the science supporting food chemical safety. Includes case studies which detail regulatory responses to food contamination incidents Considers the uptake and transfer of persistent organic pollutants in the food chain and the risk assessment of contaminates in food Details perticular persistent organic pollutants, toxic metals and metalloids in foods including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), mercury and arsenic among others

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Element speciation determines the different forms a chemicalelement can take within a given compound, enabling chemists topredict possible ramifications for the environment and humanhealth. This comprehensive book focuses on the analytical aspectsand instrumentation of speciation, while covering the gamut ofmetal speciation forms with adverse effects on biological materialsand the environment at large. The book consists of contributions by a truly international groupof leading authorities on element speciation in bioinorganicchemistry. The editor--a contributor here himself--traces thedevelopments in the field, discussing the advances made over thepast decade in various methodologies and the significance of theincreased capacity to detect extremely small concentrations oftrace elements in various media. Several chapters are dedicated to the various methods andapplications of speciation, exploring specific analytical methods, such as direct, chromatographic and nonchromatographic methods, aswell as nuclear-based and voltammetric methods. Others coverspeciation in various natural water and marine environments and itsmanifestation in biological materials, human serum, or foodstuff. In addition, the book examines speciation theory and legal aspectsas well as questions of quality and sources of errors--issues thatunderscore the perennial need to develop new methods for obtainingstill more accurate data. Extremely broad in scope and rich in detail, this volume providesthe key to improving the state of the art in the field, and is sureto stimulate further research. It stands as a one-of-a-kindreference for analytical and inorganic chemists, as well asbiochemists, in a wide range of disciplines, including toxicology, environmental science, nutrition research, clinical chemistry, andpharmacology. A complete reference for the analytical and instrumental aspects ofspeciation This unique volume provides both a comprehensive reference and apractical guide to the complete range of issues arising fromelement speciation. It concentrates on analytical methods andinstrumentation in bioinorganic chemistry--especially as applied towater-related projects--while addressing the larger environmentaland human-health concerns of our times. Complete with over 100 illustrations, this collaborative effort byan international group of experts describes * Methods for the detection and analysis of species elements, including direct methods, atomic spectrometry, nuclear activationanalysis and radio tracer, high-performance chromatography, orvoltammetric procedures * Specific effects of various species elements, including heavymetals, arsenic, and many other trace elements * Biological materials showing concentrations of trace elements, including human serum, milk, and marine organisms * Various environments affected by element speciation, such asnatural waters, sea waters, estuarine, and coastal environments * How to avoid common pitfalls and obtain sound and accuratedata For anyone involved in environmental and earth sciences, as well asthe related areas of public health, pharmacology, toxicology, nutritional research, or environmental regulations, this importantwork offers the most systematic survey of element speciation todate. It also provides historical perspective, a preview ofexpected developments, and a multitude of new ideas for furtherresearch. The author of approximately 240 published papers and three previousbooks, Dr. Caroli is an active member of numerous national andinternational committees and organizations concerned with chemicalsin the environment. He also sits on the editorial or advisoryboards of several scientific journals, including the Journal ofAnalytical Atomic Spectroscopy, Environmental Science and PollutionResearch International, and Microchemical Journal.
