Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2017 in the subject Chemistry - Materials Chemistry, grade: 1,0, Dresden Technical University (Fakultät für Maschinenwesen), language: English, abstract: The first aim of the present work is to design, built and test a device being capable of rapidly heating and subsequently immediately quenching bulk metallic glass (BMG) specimens in a uniform and reproducible manner. The heating and ejection process of the BMG specimen is temperature-controlled, so that the heating rate and temperature to which the BMG is annealed to, can be varied. BMG composites consisting of B2 CuZr crystalline particles embedded in the glass shall be prepared. The occurrence of the shape-memory B2 CuZr phase and a good glass-forming ability limit the selection of the alloy system to Cu-Zr-Al. The high-temperature B2 CuZr phase is metastable at room temperature, yet rapid cooling of Cu-Zr-Al-based alloys enables to cast B2 CuZr BMG composites. One could speculate that the B2 CuZr phase forms as well during the devitrification of Cu-Zr-Al-based metallic glass at high heating rates. Indeed, a recent work yields hope rendering the preparation of B2 CuZr BMG composites by devitrification possible. Therefore, a rapid heating or flash-annealing device as it is termed here, is developed first. Thereby, flash-annealing is defined as rapid heating to a predefined temperature followed by immediate quenching. Cu-Zr-Al-based BMGs are flash-annealed at different heating rates to temperatures above the crystallization temperature and the influence of the heating rate on the phase formation shall be unravelled. The exact ejection temperature of the BMG specimen determines the volume fraction of the crystalline phase(s) and the crystal size distribution of the so-obtained composite. The immediate subsequent quenching at a high cooling rate is crucial here, since the partially crystallized supercooled liquid must be frozen in. The mechanical properties of the BMG composites and deformation mechanisms involved are studied. Moreover, the microstructure of these BMG composites allows to gain knowledge about crystallization kinetics of highly supercooled liquids during rapid heating.

Book excerpt: Metallic glasses can be considered for many commercial applications because of the higher mechanical strength, corrosion and wear resistance when compared to crystalline materials. To consider them for novel applications, the challenge of preparing metallic glasses from the liquid melt phase and how the properties of metallic glasses change due to relaxation need to be understood better. The glass forming ability (GFA) with variation in composition and inclusion of different alloying elements was studied by using thermal techniques to determine important GFA indicators for Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMG). The effect of alloying elements, annealing temperature and annealing time on the thermal and structural relaxation of the BMGs was studied by using an annealing induced relaxation approach. The thermal relaxation was studied by measuring specific heat of the samples using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and calculating the enthalpy recovery on reheating in the BMG samples. The structural relaxation was also studied by using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) technique on the as-obtained and relaxed samples. The effects of alloying elements and annealing on electrical resistance were studied by using a two point probe. From the study, it was found that the currently used GFA indicators are inadequate to fully capture and identify the best GFA BMGs. The fragility (beta) of the melt is a new criterion that has been proposed to measure and analyze GFA. The enthalpy relaxation of Zrbased BMGs was found to follow a stretched exponential function, and the parameters obtained showed the BMGs used in the current study are strong glass formers. EXAFS studies showed variations in the structure of BMGs with changes in alloying elements. Furthermore, alloying elements were found to have an effect on the structure of the relaxed BMGs. The resistance of BMGs was found to decrease with relaxation which can be attributed to short range order on annealing.

Book excerpt: In Nucleation in Condensed Matter, key theoretical models for nucleation are developed and experimental data are used to discuss their range of validity. A central aim of this book is to enable the reader, when faced with a phenomenon in which nucleation appears to play a role, to determine whether nucleation is indeed important and to develop a quantitative and predictive description of the nucleation behavior. The third section of the book examines nucleation processes in practical situations, ranging from solid state precipitation to nucleation in biological systems to nucleation in food and drink. Nucleation in Condensed Matter is a key reference for an advanced materials course in phase transformations. It is also an essential reference for researchers in the field. Unified treatment of key theories, experimental evaluations and case studies Complete derivation of key models Detailed discussion of experimental measurements Examples of nucleation in diverse systems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the manufacturing processes that warrants the attention of industrialists, researchers and scientists, because of its ability to produce materials with a complex shape without theoretical restrictions and with added functionalities. There are several advantages to employing additive manufacturing as the primary additive manufacturing process. However, there exist several challenges that need to be addressed systematically. A couple such issues are alloy design and process development. Traditionally alloys designed for conventional cast/powder metallurgical processes were fabricated using advanced AM processes. This is the wrong approach considering that the alloys should be coined based on the process characteristics and meta-stable nature of the process. Hence, we must focus on alloy design and development for AM that suits the AM processes. The AM processes, however, improve almost every day, either in terms of processing capabilities or processing conditions. Hence, the processing part warrants a section that is devoted to these advancements and innovations. Accordingly, the present Special Issue (book) focuses on two aspects of alloy development and process innovations. Here, 45 articles are presented covering different AM processes including selective laser melting, electron beam melting, laser cladding, direct metal laser sintering, ultrasonic consolidation, wire arc additive manufacturing, and hybrid manufacturing. I believe that this Special Issue bears is vital to the field of AM and will be a valuable addition.
