Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were whites implicated in and shaped by apartheid culture and society, and how did they contribute to it? In Ordinary Whites in Apartheid Society, historian Neil Roos traces the lives of ordinary white people in South Africa during the apartheid years, beginning in 1948 when the National Party swept into power on the back of its catchall apartheid slogan. Drawing on his own family's story and others, Roos explores how working-class whites frequently defied particular aspects of the apartheid state but seldom opposed or even acknowledged the idea of racial supremacy, which lay at the heart of the apartheid society. This cognitive dissonance afforded them a way to simultaneously accommodate and oppose apartheid and allowed them to later claim they never supported the apartheid system. Ordinary Whites in Apartheid Society offers a telling reminder that the politics and practice of race, in this case apartheid-era whiteness, derive not only from the top, but also from the bottom.

A heartwarming, clever, and memorable mystery by Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Amy Vansant. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "One of the best surprise ending I have read.." The relationships between young and old, sprinkling of romance, small-town warmth, and the cast of unforgettable characters will make Pineapple Port Mysteries your new favorite series! Charlotte Morgan isn't your average Pineapple Port 55+ community neighbor. She's 26 years old—adopted by a whole neighborhood of retirees as a child. She's had an unusual upbringing—pickleball instead of proms, golf carts instead of gossip. Well, that's not true. Pineapple Port has tons of gossip. Her unusual upbringing has left Charlotte an oddball among her peers, but she's lucky—she has Mariska and Darla, her late grandmother's neighbors, to love and watch over her. Still, lately, she's been feeling restless. Something's missing. Is it the human skeleton buried in her garden? Nope. She just found that. In an instant, she goes from lonely and bored to trapped in a web of lies. Her neighbors are acting squirrelly, there's a corpse in her garden and a handsome pawnbroker is hovering in the yard...Does he know the dead woman? And could she have invented a worst way to make a first impression? Charlotte's found-family is ready to help her solve the mystery…but there's a problem... She's starting to think one of them might be this cold case's killer... ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman is huge right now, and if you like that you will love Pineapple LIes. Personally, I have to say I enjoyed this even more." - author Tommy Ueland Throughout the series, you find killers, crazy ex-girlfriends, loving dogs, romance, treasure hunts, government operatives, FBI agents, danger... and a cast of characters almost as funny as they are loving, supportive and brave.

Book excerpt: In the second volume of the acclaimed "Gas, Food, Lodging" trilogy, authors John Jakle, Keith Sculle, and Jefferson Rogers take an informative, entertaining, and comprehensive look at the history of the motel. From the introduction of roadside tent camps and motor cabins in the 1910s to the wonderfully kitschy motels of the 1950s that line older roads and today's comfortable but anonymous chains that lure drivers off the interstate, Americans and their cars have found places to stay on their travels. Motels were more than just places to sleep, however. They were the places where many Americans saw their first color television, used their first coffee maker, and walked on their first shag carpet. Illustrated with more than 230 photographs, postcards, maps, and drawings, The Motel in America details the development of the motel as a commercial enterprise, its imaginative architectural expressions, and its evolution within the place-product-packaging concept along America's highways. As an integral part of America's landscape and culture, the motel finally receives the in-depth attention it deserves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jake Tromp's wife has left him. But he still has his guns. He makes do, operating as a private eye from a second-floor office, next to a prostitute's parlour. What else is an old South African to do in a new country? Tromp chooses his clients unwisely. Like the man who instructs him to kidnap a shady businessman's daughter. Only, is it the right girl Tromp and his fumbling assistant Frikkie capture? Soon they shackled with two kidnapped girls, one of whom is more street-savvy than Tromp and Frikkie put together. Not only does the sassy lass hit it off with Omo, her Nigerian keeper, she also starts managing her own kidnapping. From Florida her rich Cuban dady - believing Fidel Castro to be behind everyting - send two heavies to find his girl. Soon, Cubans are crawling all over Cape Town. Or are they? Tromp, who has been known to try as a few tricks of his own, condidently plays the two sides against each other. When he's hired to track down the very girls he kidnapped, life becomes really complicated. And when the police get wind of the whole thing, there's no end to the confusion. Tromp's Last Stand, a comical romp through the Cape Town underworld, is very unlike the conventional speeding, gun-toting, girl-grabbing crime novel. In these delightfully irreverent pages you should rather expect slow-motion car chases, raids that backfire and girls that don't want to be rescued.
