Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although commonly regarded as a prejudice against Roman Catholics and their religion, anti-popery is both more complex and far more historically significant than this common conception would suggest. As the essays collected in this volume demonstrate, anti-popery is a powerful lens through which to interpret the culture and politics of the British-American world. In early modern England, opposition to tyranny and corruption associated with the papacy could spark violent conflicts not only between Protestants and Catholics but among Protestants themselves. Yet anti-popery had a capacity for inclusion as well and contributed to the growth and stability of the first British Empire. Combining the religious and political concerns of the Protestant Empire into a powerful (if occasionally unpredictable) ideology, anti-popery affords an effective framework for analyzing and explaining Anglo-American politics, especially since it figured prominently in the American Revolution as well as others. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, written by scholars from both sides of the Atlantic working in history, literature, art history, and political science, the essays in Against Popery cover three centuries of English, Scottish, Irish, early American, and imperial history between the early sixteenth and early nineteenth centuries. More comprehensive, inclusive, and far-reaching than earlier studies, this volume represents a major turning point, summing up earlier work and laying a broad foundation for future scholarship across disciplinary lines. Book Synopsis Walking Worthy of the Gospel by : Nathaniel Vincent
Download or read book Walking Worthy of the Gospel written by Nathaniel Vincent and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-10-04 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by Vincent concerns the manner in which Christians should walk according to the profession they make. Walk the talk, as we would say today. He expounds Ephesians 4:1, “I therefore the prisoner of the Lord beseech you, that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.” This calling is a duty, and Vincent explains how Christians are to be entreated and beseeched to do their duty to walk in holiness as God has called them. This calling is both inward and outward, and only the effectually called people of God can walk in a worthy manner to glorify Jesus Christ through the power of his Spirit. This is an exciting treatise that includes the theological aspects of the "ordo salutis," or order of salvation, as well as practical solutions for the Christian in doing more than merely talking about being a Christian. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book Synopsis The Love of the World Cured by : Nathaniel Vincent
Download or read book The Love of the World Cured written by Nathaniel Vincent and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This treatise by Vincent was originally a series of sermons that covered 1 John 2:15, “Love not the world.” Vincent then updated these sermons and turned them into tract form in order to publish this work at the request of the hearers who needed to be reminded to study this vital doctrine. Vincent covers 1) defining "the world," 2) "what the love of the world" is, 3) how Christians may love the world and how they ought not, 4) various words of caution and application, as well as exhorting those who do love the world to see their sin, and 5) various remedies against such sin. He also encourages believers to be steadfast in loving God more than they would or could love the world. Book Synopsis The Doctrine of Conversion by : Nathaniel Vincent
Download or read book The Doctrine of Conversion written by Nathaniel Vincent and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this penetrating treatise, Vincent teaches how conversion takes place as it is applied from Ezekiel 33:11, “Turn ye, turn ye, from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?” Vincent exhorts the reader from the very beginning, “As soon as you have looked on to this book, immediately look off again and look up to heaven! How can you see to read without any profit, unless the Father of lights opens your eyes and gives you an understanding heart?” He divides this treatise into three key doctrines about conversion, applies uses of the doctrine, and demonstrates the differences between true and false conversion. This is a simple but piercing discourse on the conversion of a sinner and is a helpful aid to gaze into God’s mysterious work of regeneration on his chosen people; while at the same time, it is an alarm for unconverted sinners to repent and believe the Gospel. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.
