Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Shakespeare's original audiences weep? Equally, while it seems obvious that they must have laughed at plays performed in early modern theatres, can we say anything about what their laughter sounded like, about when it occurred, and about how, culturally, it was interpreted? Related to both of these problems of audience behaviour is that of the stage representation of laughing, and weeping, both actions performed with astonishing frequency in early modern drama. Each action is associated with a complex set of non-verbal noises, gestures, and cultural overtones, and each is linked to audience behaviour through one of the axioms of Renaissance dramatic theory: that weeping and laughter on stage cause, respectively, weeping and laughter in the audience. This book is a study of laughter and weeping in English theatres, broadly defined, from around 1550 until their closure in 1642. It is concerned both with the representation of these actions on the stage, and with what can be reconstructed about the laughter and weeping of theatrical audiences themselves, arguing that both actions have a peculiar importance in defining the early modern theatrical experience.

Book excerpt: In the Globe Quarto series co-published with Shakespeare's Globe to mark the rediscovery of forgotten plays by Shakespeare's contemporaries. The Antipodes includes a play-within-the-play, also called 'The Antipodes', which is used as psychotherapy for Peregrine Joyless's obsession with travel books, with the aim of recalling him to his marital duties. Brome's audience is also confronted with a picture of the topsy-turviness of the 'world upside down' of London in the 1630s.The play was revived, in an adapted form by Gerald Freedman, at Shakespeare's Globe in 2000.

Hattaway characterizes the play as a tribute to Shakespeare, and as a belated recognition that the fantasies of romance contain profound truths. In this new edition, the spelling has been modernized, the text updated, and a critical introduction has been added. It also contains helpful appendices and a commentary that explains difficult or significant passages.

Starting his career as a manservant to Ben Jonson, he wrote a string of highly successful comedies which were influential in British theatre long after Brome's own playwriting career was cut short by the closure of the theatres in 1642.This book offers the first full-length chronological account of Brome's life and works, drawing on a wide range of recently rediscovered manuscript sources. Each of the surviving plays is discussed in relation to its social and political context, and its sense of place. A final chapter reviews Brome's enduring stageworthiness into the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the most recent Brome revivals.

Book excerpt: The Roman Actor explores the balance between private and public moralities, effectively condemns tyranny, and defends plays, anatomizing both the theatre of power and the power of theatre. This new Revels Plays volume provides a modernized text with a thorough introduction that sets out Massinger's intervention in the political tensions of his own time and examines his clear-eyed portrayal of the pleasures and perils of performance. It also includes a detailed commentary on the play and an appendix discussing the play's textual history. It focuses on the play's theatrical life in its own time and ours, and gives a detailed stage history including an interview with Sir Antony Sher, who played the tyrannical Roman emperor, Domitian, in the Royal Shakespeare Company's acclaimed production in 2002.
